--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have a mixed menu as far as next week's releases are concerned . We have Rekha and Mallika Sherawat in 'Bachke Rehna Re Baba' and Vashu Bhagnani's Khalid Mohammed directed 'Silsiilay' , Govinda's much delayed 'Ssukh' and a few others like 'Chetna' and (hold your breath) 'Ram, Balram Aur Ramkali' in some circuits .Of the above 'Bachke Rehna Re Baba' seems to have edge followed not so far behind by 'Silsiilay' . As far as 'Ssukh' is concerned it will get a few good review but that is about all but for the next big release we have to wait for June 24 because that is when Shah Rukh Khan's 'Paheli' releases .

Opening of 'Parineeta' :- Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Pradeep Sarkar directed 'Parineeta' starring Sanjay Dutta , Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan had a mixed start . The opening was average in Bombay and was dull at most places despite good publicity because it (publicity) could not generate the desired level of excitement .

In the overseas 'Parineeta' has made a decent start with $201,956 in the US and $209,048 in the UK during the first weekend . Obviously the opening should not be compared with the movies that Saif did for Yash Raj and Dharma Productions . It is however , Sanjay dutt's best UK opening .

Verdict :- The 20 to 25 crore 'Parineeta' is a class appealing film with more for ladies and families and less for the youngsters and masses . Its business will vary in different circuits . It may steady itself and may even pick up by positive word of mouth and ladies patronage in circuits like Bombay , Bengal (because of the Bengali ambience ) and South to emerge plus . Delhi city should be fare (due to the weekend) but U.P. will be below the mark . In circuits like C.P.C.I. , Rajasthan and Bihar , the extremely poor initial would mar the chances .

'D' :- The movie has done fair business in just Maharashtra and to an extent in Hyderabad Nizam but overall it is another failure for the Verma camp despite an out and out support by their in-house trade expert .

Ist week collections :-

Bombay - 73,16,775 from 25 cinemas (3 on F.H.)

Thane district - 17,05,240 from 8 cinemas (3 on F.H.)

Ahmedabad - 15,00,105 from 7 cinemas (2 unrecd.)

Bhavnagar (31 shows) - 3,26,965

First week collections : 2,70,25,327 from 110 cinemas (reported)

First week total (calculated): All India 3.35 cr - 3.45 cr

Verdict :- The 5 crore budget prequel to 'Company' , 'D' is an average in Bombay but overall another looser for the Verma camp at the box-office .

'Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai ' , 'Time Pass and 'Mastaani ... Lost In A Crowd Of Two :- All the three mentioned movies have failed at the box-office .

'Bunty Aur Bubli' :- The trade experts who had predicted dooms for the movie , on the day of its release were proved wrong once again , like they were for 'Black' this year and 'Swades' last year . Given the excellent first week and the superb second week , many have accepted the verdict , some quite early and with grace (accepting that their predictions were wrong ) and others sheepishly and reluctanty but maintaining a defiant posture . The movie is progressing very well even in the third week and looks all set for even greater achievements .

In the overseas , the movie has proved to be Abhishek's biggest grosser (in Amitabh's company) as it has earned more than $ 1.6 million so far and is still going strong .

Madras - 8,49,184 from 2 cinemas

Second week total : 5,33,25,959 from 121 cinemas (reported)

Total for two weeks (calculated): All India 22.10cr - 22.30 cr

Overseas - In the US the movie collected $819,147 and in UK $858,241 ( both upto the third weekend)

Verdict :- Given its 12 crore budget (15.50 crores including print and publicity ) and the collections so far , the movie is already an above average (Hit in Bombay , Delhi-U.P. and East Punjab ) and all indications are that it will get up by a couple notches in the weeks to come .

'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' :- The low budget fare from Balaji continues to have a dream run and is the years biggest hit so far , given the cost to returns . It is a similar case to 'Raaz' and 'Murder' of a few years back . However, the year is not over yet !

Fifth week collections : 80,87,514 from 87 cinemas(reported)

Total for five weeks (calculated): All India 14.40cr - 14.45 cr

Verdict : Given the low selling price and also the small budget , 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' already past a hit status may even achive a higher status .

'Waqt -The Race Against Time' :- The movie is maintaining steadily on the lower side , but for it to achieve a hit status in India does not look possible .This despite the fact that it has been granted tax-exemption in U.P.

Seventh week collections : 20,96,052 from 33 cinemas (reported)

Total for seven weeks (calculated): 21.50 - 21.60 cr

Verdict :- Given the not so low selling prices , and the cost to distributors of around 14 crores (including print and publicity 'Waqt -The Race Against Time' is a semi - hit in India (average in East Punjab , above average in Bihar) and a hit in Bombay and a big hit in the overseas with a business of around $ 2.5 million .
