This is a mini-review of the Insaaf Ka Tarazu DVD released by Yashraj.

Banner - BR Films

Director - BR Chopra

Music Director - Ravindra Jain

DVD type - Single sided dual layered

DVD audio - Pseudo 5.1 (mono panned to all channels )

DVD video - NTSC and it has a very high bit rate throught the film, ranging from a min of 5 MPBS and rising to as high as 7 MBPs. Aspect ratio being 4:3

DVD author - Not mentioned ( but I have a lurking suscpicion that this was authored by Prasad Digital Video ). Notice the manner in which one, cannot skip the initial advertisements.

Extras - Original Trailor & Yash Chopra in conversation with BR Chopra

Ratings :-

Audio - Clear Mono sound used , so that even if a panning was used it doesnt reflect on the overall quality of the sound
(6.5/10)

Video - Film source used is very clean with very little blemishes. Good color contrasts and dark scenes have been replicated properly. Pixellation effects (remnescent of the SUPERDIGITAL era) are practically absent from this DVD. Motion artifacts are minimal due to the very high bit rate used. Even if used (some scenes) it is negligible.
(7/10)

Overall DVD rating - 7.5/10

My recommendation go ahead and purchase this Classic film from the YASHRAJ stables and I hope they can carry on with this kind of authoring work !

sk bhai, yaar how can you give 6.5 out of 10 to any DVD that has the pseudo 5.1 crap. I mean there is nothing worse, as far as audio quality is concerned, than a mono sound blasting out of all 5.1 speakers. I personally think that any DVD with such audio presentation should merit at best a 2 or 3 at max, depending on the other characterisitics of the sound quality. Why can't these people just give mono as mono, menaing as DD 1.0 or even DD 2.0?

My Reasons for that are listed below :-

1.) I compared it with other Yashraj stuff (esp the hissing part which was prevelant in other SD authored DVDs) and this one doesnt have it

2.) I then turned back to its Mono nature, and I found that even a MONO version of the same audio was way ahead of any recent DEI authored soundtracks like Agar Tum Na Hote which was a major disappointment for me.

Thats why I thought it deserved an avg mark for the audio and a few extra marks for cleaning up the audio before presenting it. Had it been a true 5.1 audio then I would have given it an even hiogher mark.

Yaar I think you are missing my point. Which is, why do they have take a mono soundtrack and put it in all 5.1 channels, which sounds horrible. Why can't they just present mono (single track) movies in mono DD 1.0 or at most in DD 2.0 I guarantee the sound would be much better if they did it that way rather than trying these pseudo DD 5.1 stuff. Ofcourse if they could present them with real, discreet DD 5.1 sound it would be great. But that is in most cases not possible for several reasons. First and foremost the original stems of the audio of the films are not available. Secondly the cost of remixing and remastering the entire soundtrack of the film in 5.1, assuming all the technical material was available, would be prohibitively expensive. Come on yaar these companies are not even willing to spend a few cents extra for better quality media, how can you epect them to spend thousand of dollars in remixing & remastering.
I think we should be happy if they can at the least make decent DVDs of films that originally already have 5.1 audio masters. Video Sound & Eros can't even do that.
