Does Criterion have plans to release my favorite film on DVD?

Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions we get is, "Are you going to release (film title of your choice) on DVD?" or "When will (name your favorite Criterion laserdisc title) be released on DVD?" In such cases, we are usually forced to be the bearers of bad news. This is not because we think the suggestion is a bad one. Quite the contrary: Your suggestions are an important part of our acquisitions process, so please keep them coming (see below for instructions on submitting a title suggestion). The problem, as stated above, is that only a limited number of films are available for acquisition by Criterion at any given time. No matter how much we might love to release any of a huge number of remarkable works of film art, we cannot do so as the rights are often held by other companies.

As many of you know, we are one of the few surviving small businesses in what has become an increasingly competitive global marketplace. So we hope you'll understand when we can't comment on films we are actually trying to acquire at any given time. We may agree that the titles on your wish list ought to be a part of the collection, and we may actually be chasing some of them. Unfortunately we can't disclose which, or when, without tipping our hand. We've been scooped one too many times, so you'll have to forgive us for keeping mum on the subject.

I doubt we'll ever see that. I'd like to see some Satyajit Ray titles in the Criterion Collection or even Ritwik Ghatak or Adoor Gopalakrishan. Not necessarily with a lot of extras, but that would be nice.

Anything regarded as popular cinema probably wont get to Criterion. Satyajit Ray movies were good candidates but have been released by other bodies now, but similar type of movies they might consider. Old Shyam Benegal movies might good contenders. Probably off beat movies like Split Wide Open, Mumbai Matinee, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (hmm maybe anything with Rahul Bose might good picks  ).

Criterion was involved in PAL telecine and R2 Apu Triology DVDs but Apu Triology is not in the 'Criterion Collection' category.

I asked Jon Mulvaney about Indian arthouse films a few days ago and he said they have no plans.

I did the same about a year back and he said "no plans yet". Well i guess there is nothing wrong in looking forward to a Guru Dutt Box Set consisting of Pyaasa and Kakhaz Ke Phool :)

That would be awesome, but, alas, it is a pipe dream. Maybe if we kidnap him and subject him to hour after hour of the Yash Raj and Eros DVDs a la Clockwork Orange :D

Thanks for your suggestion!

Sorry for the bounceback, but due to the large volume of suggestions we receive every day, I can't respond to each one individually. You should know, however, that when you click the title suggestion button, you ensure that your message will be forwarded directly to our acquisitions crew. Customers input is very important to us, and many films that have become Criterion editions first came to our attention through the enthusiastic recommendations of Criterion viewers.

Thanks again and keep the ideas coming!

You heard the man: KEEP THE ENTHUSIASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS COMING! :P
