Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black had an unconventional heroine -- a blind, deaf mute, played by Ayesha Kapur as a child and Rani Mukerji.
But Hindi cinema has seen such heroes before in fine films like Dosti, Anjali, Shor and the recent Koi… Mil Gaya.

One of Ajay Devgan's forthcoming movies, Main Aisa Hi Hoon, sees him as a mentally challenged person. The film, where Ajay's character fights a court battle to get custody of his daughter, appears to be a desi version of the Sean-Penn-starrer, I Am Sam.

Bhansali's first film, Khamoshi, saw a deaf and dumb couple, played by Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas, in prominent roles.

rediff.com takes a look at some wonderful films where the hero or heroine were children of a lesser god.

I like the article in principle, but it contains factual errors about the information regarding SADMA and DOSTI though :

- SADMA was NOT dubbed in Hindi, it was REMADE!
- It was NOT Sridevi's first film as a grown up, PADHINARU VYAYATHINILE(apologies for sloppy transliteration in advance) was, which in fact was remade in Hindi too as SOLVAA SAAWAN with Amol Palekar and Sridevi
- Sudhir Kumar (from DOSTI) acted in plenty of movies as a sidey. In fact you find him in all sorts of movies from the seventies and eighties. Heck Shuman's thread about identifying sidey artistes in the General section of Zulm might contain his mug too :-)

These are just a few I can remember off hand. For professional journalists they should not be making such gaffes. If they do then people finding holes in their research should be paid a percentage of their salaries :-) Just kidding !!!

I did love the trivia about the naming of the character Basu Bhatt by Sai Paranjape based on her SPARSH producer Basu Bhattacharya. Hilarious!
