This something I’ve been meaning to-do for a while (together with loads of other things that I never get round to :plain: ). The same questions keep popping up over and over again regards Indian DVDs, so an organised FAQ would be useful as suggested by people here. Your help is needed in compiling this FAQ which will go on main site. Here’s a few questions I get sent on regular basis;

* Why is Indian DVD quality so bad?

* Who releases Indian DVDs?

* What this artefacts thingy you keep going on about?

* What this aspect ratio you keep going on about?

* What this noise reduction then?
(answered nicely here)

* Where do I buy Indian DVD from?
* Why are prices so high in the UK?

* What the difference between Eros/B4U and Eros/DEI DVDs?
* I heard Eros/DEI titles are no longer available, is this true?

* Some retailers are selling very cheap DVDs, are these pirate?
* What do you know about Indian DVD piracy?
* Why is there no much Indian DVD piracy?
* I saw new an Indian film at the cinema this Friday and saw the DVD in this shops next day, is this a pirate?

* Why are DEI DVDs video squashed?
* Can DEI DVDs video squashed be corrected?
* Do DEI know about this squashed video problem?
* Why don’t DEI fix the squashed video problem?

...more questions needed and help with answer would be much appreciated.

Ali

Hi Ali,

Here are my 10 FAQs.
(Feel free to edit or rephrase)

1) Q: What is Interlaced source DVD, Progressive source DVD, Film mode DVD ??
2) Q: Is it true that in order to convert the video suitable for high res progressive monitors, the first and most difficult task is to successfully convert the interlaced video to progressive video ?
3) Q: Why most of the progressively sourced DVDs have sharper image as compared to DVDs from interlaced source (EROS-DEI vs EROS-B4U comparisons in the past), even if playing and watching on interlaced sets.
4) Q: What is 2-3 Pull-down? What is the importance of being able to detect 2-3 Pull-down for Film originated material ?
5) Q: How are the 24 frames per second film presented in NTSC interlaced format, PAL interlaced format, NTSC (480p) progressive format @ 60 Hz, PAL progressive format @ 50 Hz, and NTSC (480p) progressive format @ 72 Hz ?
6) How do you convert the 60 or 50 half frame captures of NTSC or PAL into 25 or 30 full progressive frames? Is it real or simulated progressive picture ?
7) Do the progressive scan converters use 2-3 pull down for recreating original film frames? What about detecting and converting to progressive, Digital Video’s 25 or 30 images per second recorded as 50 or 60 half frames per sec. ?
8) Q: Why Film material on PAL DVDs run 4% faster ??
9) Q; Do PAL TV sourced DVDs run 4% faster than the PAL TV original??
10) Q: If a film has been transferred to PAL (making it go 4% faster) and then a NTSC DVD is made from PAL source, does it run at the normal film speed??

Thanks.

Rana
