'Julie' is a winner for all concerned with the film, while 'Asambhav' is exactly the opposite and a loser for all concerned.

'Gayab' drops 75% in the second week and is a flop.

'Garv' is doing well in the interiors. The film has around 225 prints in circulation in the fourth week but only 20 of them are in the big metros.

The producers of the two recent releases ´Julie´ and ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ , have made a neat table profit on the day their films released .

Table profit means that after selling the distribution (India and overseas) and music rights the producer earns more than the production cost of his/her movie .

Mid-Week Report

By Ashok

Julie: Amongst the Top 3 this year??

The second half of the year has gotten off to a good start with 'Garv' and 'Julie' proving to be decent fares and now 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' is also doing well initially.

'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' is holding up well in most places. The film did see a drop in parts of the South circuit (not Nizam), but in the important centers of the North in UP, Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar, the film is rock steady. Business in multiplexes is mixed with places like Chandigarh, Ajmer, Lucknow and Kota showing 100% collections, while those in Delhi and Bangalore show only 75%.

'Julie' is a big winner. The film is set to be amongst the Top 5 successful films of the year and even possibly the Top 3.

This week's release is 'Taarzan - The Wonder Car', which has a successful music score as a plus but no face value to bring in the crowds.
This mid-week box office report, published above, is a follow up to the box-office top ten published this Monday. Click here to check out which movie topped the 'Top 10 Chart' for the week ending August 1st.

SALMAN AND AKSHAY ROCK UK CHARTS!
Mujhse Shaadi Karogi enters at number eight!

The Salman Khan – Akshay Kumar combination has lured the British Asian audience in cinemas this week. Their first movie together ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ managed to collect an impressive £183,473 at the British box office during its opening run. The David Dhawan comedy, which also stars Priyanka Chopra, debuted in the national UK charts at number eight. Its collections were higher that Hollywood comedy New York Minute, which released on the same day but only debuted at number ten in the charts.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi?' Takes The Lead!

Weekend: July 30 - Aug 1, 2004.

Expectedly, David Dhawan’s ‘marriage of the year’ took a great start in the Overseas territory, despite strong opposition from Hollywood biggies.

U.K. BOX-OFFICE

MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI has opened to an overwhelming response. The film has debuted at No. 8 position, despite four major Hollywood films also making their debut in the same week – KING ARTHUR, GARFIELD, THE STEPFORD WIVES and NEW YORK MINUTE. This David Dhawan comedy has collected £ 183,473 on 32 screens [approx. Rs. 1.55 crores], with the per screen average working out to £ 5,734.

If the per screen average is to be noted, M.S.K. occupies the No. 1 position in U.K. charts this weekend. The per screen average is better than all films [including Hollywood blockbusters] running in U.K.

ASAMBHAV has crashed completely [last weekend: No. 20, this weekend: 38]. In its second weekend, the film has collected £ 2,142 on 14 screens, with the per screen average working out to £ 153. The total so far has been £ 30,311 [approx. Rs. 25.64 lacs].

HUM TUM continues to spell magic [last weekend: No. 32, this weekend: No. 42]. In its tenth weekend, the film has collected £ 1,799 on 4 screens, with the per screen average working out to £ 450. The total so far has been £ 637,024 [approx. Rs. 5.38 crores].

JULIE remains on the lower side [last weekend: No. 26, this weekend: 44]. In its second weekend, the film has collected £ 1,249 on 6 screens, with the per screen average working out to £ 208. The total so far has been £ 16,994 [approx. Rs. 14.37 lacs].

U.S.A. BOX-OFFICE

MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI has debuted at No. 31 position. The film has collected $ 199,958 on 31 screens [approx. Rs. 92.78 lacs], with the per screen average working out to $ 6,450.

BUSINESS TALK

By Taran Adarsh, Aug 5th, 2004 - 0930 hrs IST

THIS MARRIAGE HAS WORKED!

It’s time to celebrate, let’s pop champagne…

MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, David Dhawan’s latest comic caper, has gripped the nation. Despite cricket matches. Despite heavy rains lashing various parts of the country. The opening weekend as well as the business on the subsequent days has been phenomenal.

At places where house full boards are a rarity, it was heartening to witness serpentine queues outside those theatres. The first week business of the film is expected to be grand, at par with the first week business of MAIN HOON NA at several centres.

So, what really attracted the audiences in hordes? The catchy promos aided by a popular musical score did the trick. Of course, the fresh casting [Salman, Akshay and Priyanka have been teamed for the first time] and David Dhawan’s impressive track record also contributed enormously in garnering a speedy start.

The cricket matches, especially the one of Sunday [August 1], did affect the business to an extent. So did the heavy downpour. But the volume of business at the end of the first week is expected to be huge, notwithstanding the deterrents.

The heartening business of JULIE a week before and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI has once again rejuvenated the industry. The mood is upbeat and one hopes that the biggies in the coming weeks [TAARZAN, KYUN! HO GAYA NA…, FIDA, DHOOM, PHIR MILENGE] add to the tally of hits.

‘TAARZAN’ IS CRUCIAL

Normally, the name Taarzan is associated with the legendary jungle hero. But Abbas-Mustan, the men behind some of the biggest hits, have decided to call a car by this name.

TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is crucial not only for Abbas-Mustan, but also for the two newcomers in the film – Vatsal Sheth and Ayesha Takia. In the past, the director duo has been extremely lucky with newcomers [Shilpa Shetty in BAAZIGAR, Arbaaz Khan in DARAAR and Bipasha Basu in AJNABEE] and one only hopes that they gift the industry with two more deserving talents.

From the looks of it, TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR should attract the kiddies and families. And if the film clicks, who knows, it may trigger off a new trend altogether in Bollywood!

Nature hits ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ , ´Julie´ succeeds , ´Gayab´ looses
By: Abid

Get Latest Bollywood Scoop by Email - Sign up Now!

This Friday :-

This Friday will see the release of Abbas-Mustan directed ´Taarzan-Wonder Car´ , a movie basically aimed at children and may find limited success because of them , specially in quality theatres , though the trade is not much excited about this one despite the presence of the box-office consistent Ajay Devgan , who has been roped in for an important role .

Opening of ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ :-

The much hyped ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ opened to a very good opening in Bombay , while the opening was outstanding outside of Bombay and Maharashtra especially U.P. , Rajasthan , C.I. , Bihar , East Punjab and South , the cricket match saw some fall on Sunday specially in Mysore circuit and Bombay city .

The floods in Maharashtra , Gujarat , Punjab , parts of Central India and the theatres strike in Calcutta on Sunday and the subsequent bandh in West Bengal have all hit the collections of the movie . But a big movie should be powerful enough to overcome all this . It now means that the trade will now have to look for another movie to break ´Main Hoon Na´ first week record and that movie in all probabilities will be Yash Chopra´s untitled Diwali release.

Verdict : - ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ is bound to succeed in most parts of India and will be a safe bet for most of its distributors but the distributors in West Bengal and Mysore circuit will not find it so easy .

The movie has also done very well in the overseas(weekend) getting about 200,000 $ in USA and about £183,000 , getting the best print-average there .

Julie :-

The first week of ´Julie´ has been extraordinary and the low budget fare has turned out to be a goldmine for all its distributors .

First week collections :-

Bombay - 67,86,003 from 23 cinemas

Thane district - 5,62,424 from 2 cinemas ( 9 on F.H.)

Ahmedabad - 14,62,424 from 10 cinemas (2 unrecd.)

Pune - 16,93,492

Delhi - 57,97,461 from 13 prints (3 on F.H.) -- 70 percent

Noida - 9,27,291

Ghaziabad - 4,49,667 from 2 cinemas

Kaushambi - 5,70,936

Lucknow - 9,91,781 from 2 cinemas

Agra - 3,45,000

Allahabad - 2,79,306

Aligarh - 4,69,935

Gurgaon - 9,05,100 from 3 cinemas

Nagpur - 4,07,386 from 3 cinemas

Indore - 4,01,291 from 3 cinemas

Jaipur - 3,22,374

Hyderabad(gross) - 22,35,314 from 10 cinemas

Madras - 5,80,544 from 3 cinemas

First week collections : 2,86,37,995 from 104 cinemas (reported)

First week total (calculated) All India : 5.05 cr - 5.10 cr (240 prints)

Verdict :- ´Julie´ is above average with a potential to be semi-hit also .

´Asambhav´ :-

Despite huge reductions in its distribution price ´Asambhav´ is a loser .

First week collections : 1,32,00,763 from 88 cinemas (reported)

First week total (calculated) All India : 2.75 cr (approximately)

Our Verdict :- Flop

´Gayab´ :-

The childish movie crashed in its second week in the multiplexes as well as single screens and the distributors stand to loose about a quarter of their investments .

Second week collections: 53,71,588 from 58 cinemas (reported)

Two weeks total (calculated) All India: 5.95 cr - 6.00 cr

Verdict : - Looser for the producer and distributors .

´Garv -Pride & Honour´ :-

Though the movie is nearly at the end of its run in the Metro´s (specially Delhi city) its very stable in the interiors and decent in towns of North and Central India and a large no of prints are still in circulation there .

Second week collections :-

Bombay - 18,49,685 from 16 cinemas

Thane district - 1,95,895 from 2 cinemas (4 on F.H.)

Ahmedabad - 2,83,133 from 6 cinemas (1 unrecd.)

Lucknow - 2,80,731 from 2 cinemas

Allahabad - 1,10,895

Dehradun - 59,924

Bareilly - 69,333

Sahranpur - 1,25,000

Muzaffarnagar (total for 3 weeks) - 3,51,000

Nagpur - 54,919

Amravati 63,765

Ujjain - 1,81,462

Calcutta - 1,75,403

Jaipur - 1,81,462

Hyderabad (gross) - 2,30,736

Madras ( 14 shows) - 40,000

Third week collections : 34,14,524 from 42 cinemas (reported)

Three weeks total (calculated) All India: 15.25 cr - 15.35 cr (calculated)

Verdict : - ´Garv´ has turned out to be an average , due to its high selling prices but there are chances of getting its total up , mainly due to its business in the interiors/smaller towns .

I am truly disappointed with the Indian audience. Someone who made a film like Raja Babu should never be allowed to direct films again. :? David Dhawan is never going to find an audience in me!

As per Boxofficeindia.com, MSK has started faltering.

http://www.boxofficeindia.com

BOX OFFICE UPDATE-6th August 13.00 IST

The collections of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi started to crack midweek. The falls were much larger at the multiplexes where collections were around just 60% on Wednesday. The single screens are better with smaller falls. The films outcome now depends on the second week ,if it was to fall another 50% in the second week then it may not even recover costs. The first week total is expected to be similar to Lakshya and not Main Hoon Na.

There has been a change in the price of a few circuits as the film has not been sold at prices originally given. The film has been sold similarly to Main Hoon Na where Mumbai fetched a big price but the other circuits have reasonable prices.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi

Posted online: Friday, August 06, 2004 at 0000 hours IST

he baratis (audience) came in big numbers for the opening of this comedy. However, strangely, the opening was not as strong as it should have been in the Mumbai circuit. The film stars Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. It is directed by David Dhawan.

Asambhav
The film failed miserably. In some territories it was sold for a very reasonable price but there too the going was tough. In Mumbai the film was sold for a high price and the distributors stand to lose heavily.

Julie
The film did bumper business on the first day. However, from the second day collections fell in some places. Generally though they were very good in the first three days. As the film was sold for a decent price, commission is guaranteed.

Gayab
The audience were gayab from the theatres in the second week. However, on the strength of the first few days collection and the fact that it was sold very reasonably, the film is a safe proposition.

COMING UP:
Taarzan-The Wonder Car: Directors Abbas Mustan who are known for their action films, this time present a light entertainer designed specially for kids. The film is produced by Gordhan Thanwani and introduces Vatsal Sheth and Ayesha. They are supported by Amrish Puri and Ajay Devgan in a special appearance. However, the star of the show is a car. Music is by Himesh Resshmmiya.
