Missed BOOT POLISH last Saturday.

Still can catch the following 3:

Sun./dim. July 18 juillet, 19:00
SANGAM
India 1964, 238 min. Director: Raj Kapoor
SANGAM is a love triangle involving three childhood friends named Sunder, Gopal and Radha. Gopal and Radha have always been in love, but Sunder decides to ask Radha's father for her hand, but is turned down because he doesn't have a steady job. After this crushing rejection he joins the Indian army. When news of his death arrives, Gopal and Radha decide to marry. When Sunder unexpectedly turns up alive, things get very, very complicated. A classic of 1960s Indian cinema. English sub-titles.

Sun./dim. July 25 juillet, 19:00
BOBBY
India 1973, 168 min. Director: Raj Kapoor
BOBBY is the story of two tender young hearts caught in the flush of first love. Raj (Rishi Kapoor), eighteen years old, just out of school and the only son of wealthy parents, is the lonely boy who finds companionship, love and comfort in the company of Bobby (Dimple Kapadia), a sweet, innocent (and poor) sixteen year-old. Unfortunately the path of true love is strewn with too many thorns: wealth, social disparity, and adults who have long forgotten the sweet agony of infatuation. Kapoor’s groundbreaking film of love and lust beautifully conveys the archetypal Romeo and Juliet story with a classic Bollywood style. English sub-titles.

Sun./dim. August 1 août, 19:00
RAM TERI GANGA MAILI
India 1985, 178 min. Director: Raj Kapoor
Narendra (Rajiv Kapoor) is a young man who, while escaping his father's controlling hand, finds his true love when he meets the lovely and simple Ganga (Mandakini). They marry and decide to travel to Calcutta so that Narendra’s family can meet his new bride. The only problem is, his father has arranged for him to marry the daughter of a politically connected friend. This begins an epic struggle between love and greed, resulting in a film of assured substance and style. Kapoor’s final film as a director swept the 1986 Filmfare awards, India’s equivalent to the Oscars. English sub-titles.

SANGAM Screening:

It was not the 238 min version. It was the 187 min version, same as Shemaroo. Print wass faded as well as badly worn out, similar to YRF DVD. But the film length was not 213 min as in YRF DVD. Got YRF Sangam (DVD) quality and Shemaroo run time. Worst of both worlds.

BOBBY Screening:

It was the full 168 min version. Print too was much better.

Some Canadian film enthusiasts were in the theatre as well. Film got loud applause as it ended. Canadians were all praise for this film. Specially the music. I commented, rightly or wrongly, that the next week's RTGM is much better and if they liked Bobby, they will like RTGM even better.

--------------------------------

Let's hope for the RTGM is a good print, as good as Bobby or better, as RTGM is a newer film.
