I have a setup where my DVD player is hooked up to a DAC (Cal Audio Labs Sigma II) via a digital coax cable.

The problem I am running into is that the Samsung that I have now (DVDM301) sometimes mutes out the coax out so my DAC starts making this really annoying noise while it looks for a signal. Other than that the player is nice and plays MP3's CDR and CDRWs. The Virtual surround works pretty decent too.

I was thinking of getting the Sony instead (It is about the same price range) but doesn't play CDR or RW. No support for MP3. I think I could possibly live with tht. As long as my DAC doesn't make that annoying noise.

I also tried out the Panasonic DVD-RV31 but that only has an optical out and I have a good digital coax cable (Cardas) that I would rather use. Also the Panasonic muted it's signal as well.

Any advice and or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My advice, and believe me it's a good one. BUy anything but don't buy Samsung. Sometimes I wonder if Samsung in Korean means crap. lol Anyhow in my experience dealing with a lot of DVD players since I sell them as a business and also from the experience of my members (I own a DVD rental library), Samsung players are the worst.

I have a samsung microwave ( for over 9 years) and is still working well. No problems so far. Oh yeh it does'nt play a DVD yet. Its good to have samsung in the market otherwise Sony will have a monopoly like Bill Gates. Its good competition and good for the consumers. I am in UK. Have a look at the link it might help.

Problems with SONY, is you do not get all the other GIZMOS... like Mp3 Cds,etc...Secondly you cannot make it Region / Macrovison free ! APEX is probably the only DVD which has firmware upgrades and which easily reads them from CD-RW also.

One of my friends here in Ottawa, had a SONY DVD playerand I forced him to buy an APEX DVD player and very soon I will "wirk on it" and remove all the protection so that I can watch DVDs from any region , anytime.

Also the big thing of this DVD is that you can flip between PAL and NTSC at any time.

Thanks for all your help fellow zulmis. :D

I am still undecided. I also came across a Toshiba SD-2800 which seems like a good player. Any ideas or suggestions on that one?

More and more I am looking at Sony. I have a Sony TV and it works great. I had a Denon DVD player before and that hands down was the best player I have had but the problem again was with the coax out.

Region free is not a big deal for me and nor is PAL NTSC stuff. Atleast I don't think. I don't listen to many MP3s on my DVD player. Although the CDR / CDRW is an issue. Although out of 550 or so CDs, only 25 are probably CDRs, I still would like to have the capability to play CDRs on my player.
Thank you so much for helping me out.

Toshiba might be ok, but next to sony, but it is ur money and ur call, i''ll pay 15-20% more for sony, but BAAP BADA YA BETA!

BTW< sony does better job for displaying anamorphic dvd on 4:3 tv too! i had recently seen toshiba and sony side by side, in my opinion, ergonomics, picture, looks ,quality build sony was a winner, interlace picture was a away better, i meant anamorphic at least 10-20% which way u are looking, Nath is a very experienced guy with apex, but i dont trust those guys! so look at what he is suggesting too! GOOD LUCK:p
