Simran - The slow fade-out

By Moviebuzz
Wednesday, 12 May , 2004, 11:39

The big question being asked in south Indian film circles – "Why did Simran marry Deepak at the peak of her career if she still nourishes dreams of continuing her acting?"

The actress is allegedly calling up producers and contacts in the industry desperately seeking roles. But the industry is having the last laugh as they are refusing to entertain her. Her last release will be S.J.Suryah’s New on June11.

More shocking news for the actress was when FANTA discontinued the contract with her and is now showing only ads featuring Rani Mukherjee on Tamil channels. And last week JEEVA soap for which Simran was the brand ambassador has replaced her with Trisha, who has been signed for a record price.

Meanwhile Mani Ratnam is heaving a sigh of relief as he had smartly replaced her at the last minute in Yuva with Esha Deol after she has done a major portion of the film. Now the former queen bee of Tamil cinema is going around saying that she is still getting offers from Telugu!

Review

Story

Nani (Mahesh Babu) is an 8-year-old kid. He is fed up with the bad treatment meted to him by his mother. When he attempts suicide, he is rescued by a weird scientist 'Science' (Raghuvaran). Nani tells him that he is fed up with everybody harassing him in his house. Science offers him a service that would make 8-year old Nani into a 28 year old grown-up. Nani accepts the proposal. Nani becomes big and starts living outside. His mother lodges a complaint in police station that her son is missing.

Nani grabs a job in a Toy manufacturing company as a product manager. The nature of his job is to play with all the toys and suggest improvements. He earns quite a handsome amount. In the process, he interacts with Priya (Amisha Patel), the daughter of TOY company's chief (Nazar). Priya is madly in love with Nani. Later on Nani realizes that his mother loves him and she is missing him a lot. By looking at the sorry plight of her mother after he became big, Nani asks Science to revert him back as kid. When he makes Nani back to 8-year-old kid, there is a complication. Nani is an 8-year old kid in the day time and a 28-year old grownup during the night time. The rest of the film is all about how Nani manages it.

Artists Performance

Mahesh Babu: There is an amazing tenderness in the looks of Mahesh Babu. That same quality shows up as an effective tool for the portrayal of Nani character (8 going on 28 ). Mahesh Babu came up with an authentic performance. He looked stylish and charming in suits. His histrionics in pathos scenes are genuine.

Amisha Patel : Amisha Patel is great in the film. She exposed quite a bit of cleavage and has got tremendous footage in this film.

Others: Devyani is OK as mother of Nani. However, the voice of Savitha Reddy is not apt for the role of mother. She also overdid (like in Tamil movies) in few of the scenes. The kids (Ashok Galla) who played Nani and his buddy did well. Aiswarya is irritating as the cigarette-smoking buddy of heroine, who always speaks in Raghuvaran's accent. Ali, Brahmanandam and Ravi Babu did the roles of comedy villains. Sanjay - husband of producer Manjula - played the role of Devyani's husband in this film. Sunil provided some unusual comedy with his farts in climax fight. Nazar and Raguvaran are adequate. Kiran Rathod, Anjala Zhaveri and Mehak made guest appearances in the title song of the film. They look very insignificant in that song.

Technical Departments:

Story: Story of the film is inspired by Tom Hanks Hollywood blockbuster 'Big'. Quite a few scenes from that film are reused as per the convenience. However, story writer SJ Suryah failed in altering the story as per the nativity. If Big film has 70% importance to mother-son bonding, Nani film has 70% importance to romance between the lead pair.

Screenplay - direction: Screenplay by SJ Suryah is insipid. Direction is not up to the mark. Narration is very slow and boring at times. He tried to depend more on creating situations that explore conflict between the sexual desire of Amisha character and the innocence of Nani than trying to exploit the tender relationship between son and mother. The Telugu movie lovers who have seen SJ Suryah in a full form in films like Vaali and Kushi end up being taken for a ride for 'Nani'. SJ Suryah said in an interview given to idlebrain.com that "A music director can bear 10 flops. A hero or heroine can bear six flops each. If a director delivers one flop, the industry will throw him away." SJ Suryah should have kept that point in his mind while making this film.

Music: The songs of the film fall short of what we expect from a music director of AR Rehman caliber. AR Rehman disappoints with his background score. It does not sound like AR Rehman's at all. Among the songs, Vasta Nee Venuka stands out followed by Amma song. They have used filters for 'Chakkera Ekkada Nakkina'.

Photography: Photography by Guhan is different. But what made the whole film looked unusual are the weird camera angles and contorted lens adjustments. These kind of photographic techniques are good if they were used for 5% of the scenes in the film. But it definitely irritates you if they were used for major part of the film. Another artificial factor about the photography is the lighting scheme used. Blue color dominates the film.

Dialogues: Dialogues by Sobhan are OK. He made good use of words while writing dialogues that appear to have 'double meaning' for the situations involving Amisha Patel and Mahesh Babu. The dialogue 'Eee lokamlo chedipoyina aadavallu vundochu kaani chedda amma vundadu' is heartening. He also used the code word of 'Gurram Ekkadam' referring sexual intercourse.

Other departments: Art work is trendy. Editing is OK. Choreography for 'Vasta Nee Venuka' is enticing. Other songs (except for Amma song) have fast/rap steps. Production values of the film are extravagant.

Analysis: First half of the film is boring. Second half is slightly better. The movie suffers from artificialness and bad script. Nani stands as perfect example of how sound and camera is being misused (they used weird camera angles and stunts-related sounds even for the scenes involving son-mother). All the scenes and song (Markandeya) involving Ramya Krishna were deleted. However, there are a couple of good scenes (pathos scene involving Devyani and Mahesh - Comedy scene of first night for Mahesh Babu and Amisha Patel). 'Nani' is a bad film. Mahesh should not have accepted this film. We have to wait and see if Mahesh's image comes to rescue of 'Nani'.

“New” butchered by censors!
By Moviebuzz
Tuesday, 06 July , 2004, 13:17

S.J.Suryah’s much publicised New has been butchered by regional censor board in Chennai. There were 12 visual cuts and many double-meaning dialogues have been muted. The film has been passed with an A certificate.

New has been S.J.Suryah’s pet project and he has been working on it for the last two years. The release date has been postponed a couple of times and his distributors and creditors are putting pressure on him for the last few months.

The latest we hear is that Suryah has decided to ahead and release the film with the cuts and not go to the revising committee. Now the film is schedule to release on July 9. Will the Kiran episode in film and the lip-to-lip kissing scene of Suryah and Simran be there? We will have to wait and watch.

Movie Review: New

In the first film of Vijay and Danush's appearance were better than S.J.Surya's first film. With that appearance follows him as a handicap, S.J.Surya Impressed the viewers by his action and proved that his film is going to be a success. That too in the recent months, the director -turned actor series, S.J. Surya comes next to Cheran. He is also the producer of the film. My God! He has taken hell a lot of risks!

The film gives a feeling whether it has been censored at all. There are one too many double meaning dialogues, and scenes worth not describing. May be this film may have a roaring success in c class centers.

In the screenplay if the Hero's participation goes well with you, you can also become a Hero. That is the message S.J.Surya the director cum Hero of 'New' conveys.

In the first film of Vijay and Danush's appearance were better than S.J.Surya's first film. The film gives a feeling whether it has been censored at all. There are one too many double meaning dialogues, and scenes worth not describing. May be this film may have a roaring success in c class centers.

The story is a tricky one meant to create an adult movie, and yet out of it. Pappu is an eight year old boy, his mother keeps on cursing her son. Because of this, frustrated Pappu attempts suicide. A scientist - Manivannan plays the role - makes him a 28 year old adult as per his wish. This adult is S.J.Surya. He has grown to be Twenty eight year old Physically, but mentally he is still eight year old boy. Nazar comes as doll shop owner, employs Surya for his child like nature. Nazar's daughter Simran too likes Surya and starts loving him. (Yeah. No other go!)

Now another turn in the story, twenty eight year old Surya feels for his mother, requests the scientist Manivannan to change him back to eight year old. The quack of the scientist could retrieve only half of Surya's request. He will be eight year old schoolboy in the daytime and Twenty eight year old adult in the night.

Simran, being unaware of the fact, got him married with her father's permission. So Surya plays a role of a son to his mother during daytime, and be a husband to Simran, in the night. As, eight year old boy is not aware of Sex, there are ample scope for Simran to teach him many things known to audience. Many in the audience tries to change their posture of sitting during these scenes.

Towards the end of the film Simran gets to know the secret of Surya, through his friend, and how Surya manages the situation is the climax.

Surya has put on his best of efforts to nullify the illogical story. His action as a boy and adult tickles the audience. But one thing Director S.J. Surya excels the actor S.J. Surya.

In some of the scenes, Simran has acted like in an adult Malayalam movie. Some of the dialogues and actions of Simran look perverted and vulgar. Thanks to the director.

With the fear that there will be total evasion from the women folk, S.J. Surya has shown in a few scenes about the love of mother and emotions following it. With so much of directorial capability, we don't know why S.J. Surya chose this subject? He tries to sell sex through this film. Is it required?

The others like Manivannan, Karunas, Nazar, all come and go. There is not much work there. Devayani comes as mother of the eight year old son. Though she just comes for a while, she has done her best. For Lyrics of Vairamuthu A.R. Rehman scored the music. The remix of 'Thottal Poo Malarum' is good. Dances and photography are O.K. The boy who acts as Pappu has done well. This film was told, based on 'Big" an English film. It should give a big commercial success to Surya.

(Though the Telugu version of 'New' was a flop, many magazines came to the conclusion that Tamil Version is also going to be a flop (Where as Cinesouth on 31-05-2004, had written 'New' Tamil version will be a commercial Success')

Just heard that Naani DVD is going to be Progressive by a relatively new company that has consistently been attemting to make zulmi perfect DVDs consulting one of the now dormant zulmis. This company has already succeeded in bringing out a few Indian DVDs that match DEI/ BEI encodings (did see a demo on over 100 inch screen).

Good news. I hope they have deleted scenes in there including a song that was cut out. I do not know if it would present any problems with Indian censors as the deleted scenes probably are not censored

SJ Surya added a song, Markandeya, to the Tamil version, after a few weeks of release. Is this on the New DVD?

Yes. This is a song sequence between Surya and Kiran. Nothing great except you want to see exposed Kiran...
