Hey yaaron, I know there have prolly been 100 topics like this already and I apologize if you see this and roll your eyes lol, but I'm looking to expand my collection with *quality* DVDs and was wondering what everyone's top 10 (or 5 if you can't come up with that many) Hindi DVDs are... And when I say "best" I mean like overall quality, extra features if any, etc... Mostly I'm interested in those with great picture and audio. And yah yah I know they won't be half as good as even the most average English DVD but basically, I'm lookin for the best we poor desis can get.

I already have Lagaan and [/i]Kal Ho Naa Ho[/i], and a few others. Any more suggestions? :)

The Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (DEI)(2 disc) is perfect for one viewing...This DVD is slowly deteriorating, especially in the second half of the movie. I don't know about the original DEI version, but isn't this current DEI 2 disc version (the one sold in stores or online) a Bootleg version?

BEST HINDI DVDs (and the best recent Hindi movies as well):

Devdas
Saathiya
Fiza
Mission Kashmir
Kal Ho Na Ho
Dil Chata Hai

BEST TAMIL DVDs (and the best recent Tamil movies as well):

Boys
Khakka Khakka
Kannathil Muthamittal

Rana is BEI's Ek Rishta in Original Aspect Ratio. I seem to have seen a 1.85:1 version of it

Definitely.

If you saw 1.85:1 from DEI/ BEI DVD, then it must be among few DVDs where they allow you to choose 'PAN & SCAN' succesfully.

Meenaxi- Better than your average Hindi dvd interms of Picture Quality and Sound Quality.

IMO, Ayngaran's BOYS dvd is terrible in the picture quality department. Progressive or not it looked like crap on my HDTV.

i hate to say it, but don't trust toddly's recommendations if you're only looking for good pic and audio quality. if you're looking for good movies to have on dvd though, his list can be trusted.

In terms of picture/sound quality...its anything by BEI really, the rest are just below avarage :)

Out of Hollywood companies only Sony's Mission Kashmir and Meterodome's Asoka stands out.

As long as there is decent anamorphic video, DD 5.1 surround audio, and HDTV friendly English subtitles (during the song scenes too), that is good enough for a non-Indian HDTV quality junkie such as myself, especially since these features are new to Hindi/Tamil DVDs for only movies made after 1999. It's not such a big deal if the video is scratchy. Since most Bollywood/Tamil movies have excellent DD 5.1 surround sound, a bad DVD to me is one that is really pixilated such as Khakee, Rudraksh or really flickerish such as Company...Most Bollywood movies released on DVD before 1999 did not have anamorphic video and did not have English subtitles during the song scenes...My list includes the combination of being an actual good movie too - not just good for Bollywood standards, but good for almost being a normal and professionally-made movie that anyone can watch:

Bollywood blockbuster movies such as Koi Mil Gaya and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai have really good dvd quality, but the movies themselves are B-movies and amateurish for non-Indians, so Im listing the most respectable Bollywood-type movies that can more or less be enjoyed by someone that isn't obsessed with Bollywood......the only really not-so great video quality on my list is DEVDAS, but it's such a good movie, it doesn't that matter and it's still better that it's anamorphic than not....

Except for Media Digital Mere Huzoor and Mere Mehboob, I have the rest except for Hariyali Aur Raasta. Looks like WEG Hariyali Aur Raasta is as good as the others in your list. I had sent you a PM about Hariyali Aur Raasta more than a month ago, but you haven't opened it yet??

imo, kal ho naa ho and koi mil gaya do not have "decent anamorphic video" and i'd rate devdas higher than both of these dvds. and what is "scratchy" video?
