hope rekindled for lagaan!

MONSOON WEDDING LOSES AT BAFTAS!
The movie missed out on the best foreign movie award!

Mira Nair's award winning blockbuster Monsoon Wedding was hoping to add another trophy to its collections with the recent BAFTA awards.

The BAFTA awards are the British equivalent of the OSCARS and are very prestigious indeed. Monsoon Wedding was nominated in this year's award for best film not in English language.

Hopes were high that it might actually bag the award, but unfortunately it was beaten on the night by the movie Amores Perros.

An interesting point to note is that the BAFTAs normally give an indication of how will win at the OSCARS, and the French smash Amelie (which is Lagaan's strongest contender at the OSCARS) didn't actually win in this category - which brings new hope for Lagaan's chances!

I think the Bafta's are totally politically driven. They have no real clue when they talk about best Foreign movie. Lagaan stands a good chance and even if they do not win they have made an impact on the west.

Actually Bafta is not an indicator of Oscar awards as much as Gloden Globes.

Ahem.. althou I personally don't think Lagaan deserves the nomination. Thought Monsoon Wedding or even DCH would have been better options. But now that it has gone through, I wish it gets the statutte.

An Academy Member expert says that LAGAAN has a good chance of taking it all at the Oscars. Read this article from Times Of India
