Dull opening for Yuva!
Mani Ratnam's Yuva met with mixed reviews. Ditto for the response it got at the box office.
Predictably, the film took a decent opening in metros. But it fell short of making an impact in the interiors of India.

Uff Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai..!, a mushy love story from the Rajshri Productions stable, was a no-go at the BO.

Note: Films are ranked according to their release dates.

Last week's box office results

**** I personally FEEL, whenever a hindi film, made for North, LOOKS like SOUTHISH and even worse! It meets its BAD FATE, NAYAK, BHB, YUVA, RUN, SHAKTI, TAkshak..etc etc, no Hype, no money, no SFX, no music can save it.

South directors should stay in their pavillion, if they think their product is good has universal appeal, dubb it, do new music, and let the people see and decide!

They called it 'Average'. At least not a Flop.

Rana

P.S.
Looks like some state BO status as per achieved collections (like Boxofficeindia) and some like Rediff state expected BO status as per trend.

Yuva BO collections may not be that bad after all.

1) I saw a report Yesterday (Can't find it today; Times Of India) that Yuva opened to good collections in UK.

2) http://www.rediff.com/movies/2004/may/26yuva.htm

NY Times praises AB Jr!

Excerpts:

Six years ago, Mani Ratnam's Dil Se... was one of the first Hindi films to figure in the UK's top ten.

Unlike in India, the film was a smash hit in North America and Britain, establishing Shah Rukh Khan as one of the more bankable stars outside India.

The film also brought A R Rahman to the attention of fabled composer and producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who would subsequently present Rahman's music in Bombay Dreams.

The New York Times review of Yuva offered some consolation to Ratnam, Rahman, and actor Abhishek Bachchan.

It called Ratnam 'a dynamic, natural film-maker'.

The film did not make it to the top 10 in Britain. The No 10 film on the list, Secret Window, grossed about $180,000 over the weekend. Yuva is said to have grossed about $150,000.

In America, the film opened with about $210,000 on 30 screens, clicking at 21st position on the list. Given that its male stars have no substantial following in North America and Britain, its estimated three-day gross of $360,000 is rather decent.

If the film follows the usual path of box-office attrition for desi films (down by 50 per cent in the following weeks) on both sides of the Atlantic, it could end its run with about $800,000.

The New York Times ran a 400 word review on the film by its secondary critic David Kehr, who complained that director Mani Ratnam 'uses Bollywood conventions to get at a social reality'.

Calling the movie's music 'bouncy', Kehr also mentioned that Rahman's music is the basis of the current Broadway show, Bombay Dreams.

Among the actors, Kehr praised Bachchan for his 'simmering, charismatic performance'.
------------------------------------

$ 800,000 or Rs 4 crore is not bad.
If the film picks up or doesn't drop by as much as 50% in the second week, because of if releasing in new cities, it might make a good run in North America & UK.

Mega brand Mani works wonders!

Mani Ratnam’s bilingual - Yuva in Hindi and Aayitha Ezhuthu in Tamil - has been torn by critics and savaged by his colleagues in the industry but at the box office, the films have taken a bumper opening.

In Bangalore, both the versions have taken an extraordinary opening in 30 screens with 93 percent occupancy for the weekend setting a new record.

In Mumbai and New Delhi multiplexes, the week-end tickets of Yuva were sold out in advance and in US the film has done $ 200,000 in the opening weekend.

Back home in Chennai Aayitha Ezhuthu has registered 100 percent opening at all the five theatres, thanks to the brand equity of Mani Ratnam which was able to get the film such a good opening.

Nothing against BENGLORE or SOUTH, Ms. PRINCESS!! I hope it is OK!

But My point, was as NRI's esp BRIT desis has peculiar taste re films, then METRO audience has Different, North india has special taste for POT BOILERS/ACTION, so on so forth!

I personaly like a lot south film making, tech values, their tendencies to use different subjects, their cinematographym, their color pellet and esp Kearala ..landscape.

But if Shankar wont use taky SFX, and TONS of pOTS/PANS, and Others, not a lot of Animals, Chicken etc..their Film is not complete..ha ha!

Their music..southern is GOOD, have their own beat/style, so it is matter of taste/norm for cinema from a certain part, South Vs North..

I bet MOST NORTH films wont meet SOUTH taste either!!

Don't worry, arsh, I wasn't offended. I was just expressin my happiness at bein a Bangalorian ;) As far as your comment tho, it's true, cuz every region has different tastes and every region can be moody too. Sometimes the same movie works all over India, sometimes it doesn't. Doesn't mean one region's better than another. That's just how it is sometimes :)
