That was again, Quite a CONSOLATION for me too, indeed it was a MAINSTREAM theatre with big screen/comfortable seats, with option to sit 3/3rd up the theatre in the middle of row(my choice).

No Dhaka Pael, no long lines!!

:P

That is the norm over here. Ticket prices are based on this type of attendance (25 to 60%). After all, we are going to relax and not to experience Dhakka Mukka like in India. Tickets are priced for this and we are used to pay for this kind of convenience.

I have seen at the time of Harry Potter film, we and many others walked out of one show (theatre was more than 70% full) that was going to start and waited for the next show 75 minutes later.

Even at DEVDAS (and other) at I-MAX theatre had a capacity of 750 to 900 (not sure). The show that I saw, was roughly 50% full (But that's Toronto). That's $ 4000 from one show. Not bad.

MHN collects almost the same from Overseas as from All Of India, in the opening weekend

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2004/may/05mnh.htm

Main Hoon Na: House full in US, UK!

The first blockbuster of the year abroad Main Hoon Na enjoyed several full-house shows in North America and Britain, grossing an estimated $1.3 million over the weekend on 120 screens.

Even as distributor Eros was compiling the total gross for Canada and America on Monday, it had become evident that the crowd pleaser had been getting repeat audiences. The film was released on 79 screens in North America, a record for a desi movie, says Lokesh Dhar at Eros, adding that next week it is adding five more screens.

"Usually we drop a few screens in the second week but the response for this film has been awesome," says Dhar.

The movie grossed about $704, 651 in North America with most shows on Saturday evening going full across the country. With a $9,000 per screen average it was reportedly the 15th highest grossing film in the country where Mean Girls led the box-office with a $24 million haul.

In England, Main Hoon Na was the 7th highest grossing film over the weekend, according to trade publications. It grossed about $600,000 on some 40 screens, and had the highest per screen average of $15,000 in the entire country. The highest grosser in England was Kill Bill Vol 2 which slayed to the tune of $2 million in its second weekend.

------------------------------------

$ 1.3 million US is almost the same as Rs 6 crore that it collected from All of India in its opening weekend.

Shah Rukh's race to the top
By Our Correspondent ©2004 Bollyvista.com

Shah Rukh's 'Main Hoon Na' moved to the second position on the US top 10 chart. And that's saying a lot when you take into account that the percentage of those watching Indian films is far less compared to those watching American films. But does this No 2 position mean that now Hindi films have managed to cross the language barrier? Well, it still seems a little incredible, but if 'Main Hoon Na' is actually the super duper hit that it is reported to be, then Shah Rukh can change his name from King Khan to Monarch Khan.

It's # 2 in Collections per print, not total collections. Still, no main stream audiences.

'Main Hoon Na': No.20, Not 2, in US!
By Our Correspondent ©2004 Bollyvista.com

'Main Hoon Na' ranks way down at No. 20 on the US Box Office Charts, in its opening weekend. Its gross is $7,04,651 from a mere 79 theatres giving it a high per print average, but in terms of its weekend gross (which is what matters), it is nowhere at No.2 as had been projected ('Man On Fire' ranks at #2). In fact, in the UK charts, it is only at No.7 despite its high per print average.

Yes Reportedly, It did break K3G Record of First Week All India Collections, despite releasing with one third less prints.

http://www.boxofficeindia.com/

BREAKING NEWS-MAIN HOON NA SETS A NEW FIRST WEEK RECORD

The actual collections from Ahmedabad,Bangalore,Chandigarh and Jaipur have just come in and they are a massive 90 lakhs from 16 prints,75 lakhs from 13 prints, 30 lakhs from 4 prints and 55 lakhs from 9 prints respectively. These totals are way above our earlier figures. This definitely makes it cross the 12.5 crore total of K3G.The estimated total for Main Hoon Na stands at a new record 12,87,23,963 from 330 prints.Collections in trade journals should be taken with caution as most of them seem to be missing collections from Ahmedabad which will add another 90 lakhs so Film Information numbers are 9.56 crore from 172 prints instead of the 8.66 crore from 156 prints that have been printed.

NEW CIRCUIT RECORDS CREATED IN MUMBAI,DELHI/UP,RAJASTHAN and SOUTH.

----------------------------------
Previous report had indicated that it did not break the K3G record.

BOXOFFICE -8th May 15.00 IST

Main Hoon Na has grossed over 12 crore on 330 prints.A further 15 prints were on Fixed hire.It has fallen short of the all time first week record of K3G but has recorded the best all time print average of 3.70 lakhs per print. The film has set new circuit records in Mumbai,Delhi/UP and Rajasthan. In Bihar it has had the best first week ever for a Shahrukh Khan film.In East Punjab and West Bengal it has had the second best first week after K3G.In CP Berar and CI it has performed well but not as good as other parts of the country. The film is also excellent in the South. The next two weeks will determine its fate but with the bumper first week its definately seems safe all over.

It will probably be a hit, cos the audience likes any bad films with SRK. I refuse to see this film or any other junk SRK acts in from now on. I thought he'd improve by now, it looks like he's playing an malgamation of characters he's played before.
I saw a clip with some sort of matrix-copy sequence and I know this would be crap!

It doesn't matter if it's a hit or not. Some bad films are still hits, some good films flops. It just looks like the usual junk you can expect from SRK.

He will continue making these sort of cheese-fests if the Indian audiences makes them successful. I've always hoped he'd improve, but I think now there's no point in seeing any of his films.

'MHN' RINGS CASH REGISTER DESPITE POLL FEVER

By Our Staff

Box Office Report

click for larger view

The entertainment industry withstood the test of succeeding even during the general elections in India. For example, Bollywood rolled out a movie which had already set the cash registers ringing. The Shah Rukh promoted Red Chillies Productions hit the screens with the mega budget 'Main Hoon Naa' on April 30. And, the movie-going electorate gave a favourable verdict in the opening week itself. 'Main Hoon Naa' completed the first week of the release and proved a fantastic sell-out. Initially, theatres screening the film hit 92-100 per cent capacities. Cinemas in Mumbai saw 97 per cent capacity utilisation even on polling day (on May 3).

According to reports, 'Main Hoon Naa', till May 6, generated around Rs 40 million net collections just in Mumbai. The movie touched net figures of about Rs 32.5million in Delhi territory and in the region of Rs 5/6 million in Kolkata. The three metros earned Rs 80 million net collections among themselves. While the election fever was picking up from the first week of April, two more Bollywood titles had set the upbeat box office mood. The relatively smaller budget Mahesh Bhatt production 'Murder', opened on April 2nd and turned a hit. The film earned a Rs 25 million net in Mumbai and Rs 15 million in Delhi, with Kolkata contributing Rs 4/5 million. Another movie titled'Masti' made it at the box office. Though it opened on April 9, it collected a net of Rs 25 million in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

Mid-Week Report

By Ashok

Charas: Not so addictive

'Charas' and 'Sheen' drop further after poor starts and need a miracle to save them.

'Main Hoon Na', after a record first week, has settled down to mixed business in the second. Some stations are rock steady while some are seeing drops of around 40%. However, the film seems set to cross the net gross of 'Khakee' and become the biggest grosser of the year till date.

'Murder' emerges as the biggest surprise in recent times. The film has turned out to be a better bet for distributors than films like 'K3G', 'Lagaan', 'Andaaz', 'Baghban' and 'Munnabhai MBBS'. It has doubled its investment for nearly all its distributors.

This mid-week box office report, published above, is a follow up to the box-office top ten published last Saturday. Click here to check out which movie topped the 'Top 10 Chart' for the week ending May 8th, 2004.

Main Hoon Na re-writes Box Office History

This Friday will see the release of choreographer Ahmad Khan´s directorial debut "Lakeer - Forbidden Lines" and Boney Kapoor´s Abhishek Bachchan starrer ´Run´. While we have already said that chances are that ´Run´ may well be Abhishek´s elusive success, even ´Lakeer- Forbidden Lines´ is expected to have a good opening as Sunny fans have been waiting for this one for a long time and this time a Sunny movie has Rahman´s popular music too.

Charas - A Joint Effort & Sheen

Though ´Charas- A Joint Effort´ had a better opening than ´Sheen´ unfortunately they can only be called ordinary and poor respectively.

Verdict - Both the movies will fail at the box-office.

Main Hoon Na

We had predicted a big opening for ´Main Hoon Na´ in our last column. We were slightly wrong as the opening was not big but monsterous, shattering many records. The existing first week highest record was for ´Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham´ which was around 12.50 crore. ´Main Hoon Na´ surpassed it by more than a crore and with far fewer prints.

It has also shattered many circuit records, which include Mumbai, Delhi-UP, Rajasthan and South. The film maintained an approximately 90% collections for the whole week at an all India level and the distributors share for the first week in Delhi -
UP was a whopping 2.50 cr and 70 lakhs in East Punjab and 25 lakhs in Bihar which are not so strong Shah Rukh territories.

Ist week collections :
Bombay - 1,80,79,242 from 29 cinemas (8 on F.H.)
Thane district - 19,49,274 4 cinemas
Anand - 8,48,786
Rajkot - 12,05,225 from 2 cinemas
Jamnagar - 6,85,590 from 2 cinemas
Pune - 42,82,068 from 6 cinemas
Solapur - 3,25,580 from 2 cinemas
Delhi - 1,68,24,257 from 19 cinemas ( 2 on F.H.)
Gurgaon - 26,54,423
Noida ( 56 shows) - 23,17,117
Kaushambi - 6,63,958
Ghaziabad - 17,55,258 from 3 cinemas
Lucknow - 15,48,524 from 2 cinemas ( 1 unrecd.)
Kanpur - 13,90,348 from 3 cinemas
Agra - 8,20,326
Aligarh - 6,85,609
Meerut - 5,16,165
Moradabad - 2,71,687
Bulandshahar - 1,35,000
Muzaffarnagar - 1,52,192
Siliguri - 5,13,188 from 2 cinemas
Gangtok - 3,09,886
Phuntsholing - 1,13,521
Malda - 1,46,090
Calcutta - 66,27,076 from 20 cinemas
Nagpur - 12,71,096 from 5 cinemas
Jabalpur - 3,64,427
Amravati - 2,69,330
Akola - 2,92,030
Gondia (29 shows) - 82,880
Wardha - 1,15,000
Chandrapur - 2,12,244
Indore - 18,65,000 from 5 cinemas
Bhopal - 3,95,392 (2 unrecd.)
Bikaner - 4,87,278
Ajmer - 7,29,235
Kota - 11,90,050
Udaipur - 3,64,329
Sriganganagar - 1,41,552
Alwar - 1,82,142
Jaipur - 34,63,404 from 4 cinemas
Hyderabad (gross) - 73,34,697 from 16 cinemas
Madras - 21,70,707 from 3 cinemas

First week collections : 8,66,96,384 from 156 cinemas cinemas (reported)
First week total (calculated) All India 13.40 cr - 13.60 cr

Verdict - The movie is on way to a grand all India success and the way things have progressed in the second week it will be semi-hit by the end of week 2, hit by week 3 or 4 and so on to a probable superhit status by the 8th - 10th week, but for that we have to wait and watch. In the overseas too the movie has obtained good collections in US & UK.

Earlier releases :

Amongst the older releases ´Bardaasht´ becomes Bobby Deol´s second failure in 2004 but he still has many more good projects coming up.

´Masti´ becomes the second hit of 2004 with about 18.75 cr collected in 4 weeks.

´Murder´ is the first superhit of 2004 with collections of 11.50 cr in 5 weeks.

The sem-hit ´Khakee´ closes in on 28 cr.

The never say die ´Munnbhai M.B.B.S.´ which is already a superhit inches towards the 24 cr mark.

´Kal Ho Naa Ho´ already a superhit has collected 35.20 cr so far.
