hat happens when the police take panga with an ex-army officer? He uses all the dirty tricks that he learned in the army and gives them a taste of their own medicine. However, this happens only in the last ten minutus of Bardaasht. One can virtually see that Bobby Deol wants to break free of directorical shackles and bash the bad guys all around the way he has been accustomed to. But alas, E Niwas has him playing mind games instead. Rahul Dev is shown to be the the dreaded villain but apart from the initial devilry all he does is grunt and glare. We wait and wait for a big WWF style showdown between him and Bobby but that too doesn’t take place. There is also a dearth of romance. Lara Dutta makes a proper entry only after the interval and busies herself playing the dedicated lawyer after that.
The pick of the film is Ritesh Deshmukh who plays the spoilt younger brother with elan. Bobby has vainly tried to give an restrained performance but subtlety is just not his style. Lara Dutta is competent as his love interest. The technical excellence that we have come to expect from Varma protegees too is missing from Bardaasht. Niwas clearly needs to do a rethink as to whether he wants to make commercial or art films in future because his present offering aimlessly shuttles between the two genres and fails to find its mark.
