Mumbai Matinee

Pritish Nandy Communications' MUMBAI MATINEE is akin to a ride on a Mumbai street – at times smooth, at times bumpy.

Image

Debu [Rahul Bose] is 32, employed in an advertising agency, but is beset with a strange problem. He is still a virgin.

Hope comes in the form of a gentleman who calls himself 'Baba Hindustani' [Vijay Raaz]. The Baba promises to cure Debu's virginity problems.

An ecstatic Debu pays a visit to Hotel Piccadilly where the Baba operates. At the hotel, Debu meets Nitin Kapoor, a small time film-maker [Saurabh Shukla].

Things come to a head when Debu gets conned by Kapoor and the Baba. Kapoor, who is weathering a storm in his career, unwillingly asks the Baba to bail him out of his crisis.

On Baba's advice, Kapoor films Debu doing some physical exercises and uses the same visuals in his film as a man performing sexual intercourse. Debu, of course, is oblivious to all this.

Kapoor's film releases and becomes a huge success. Ironically, Debu, still a virgin, now becomes a 'Sex Star'.

It is at this point that Sonali Verma [Perizaad Zorabian], a journalist, enters Debu's life. She wants to interview him and also bails him out of jail when he gets arrested. She even accommodates him in her house when he gets thrown out of his own.

Through a passage of time, Debu finds a soul mate in Sonali and soon they fall in love. It is then that Debu realises there is more to a relationship than just sex.

The film has an interesting plot – in fact a story like this has never been attempted by an Indian film-maker before – but how one wishes the twists and turns in the story were captivating enough to keep you glued right till the climax.

Loosely inspired from THE GURU, MUMBAI MATINEE has an engaging first half. The 'strange' problem the protagonist faces has been well depicted initially. His sequences with the Baba and also with the Bengali cop are very well treated and the mainstay of the enterprise.

Although the pace drops at regular intervals, one actually doesn't mind the first half since the humour succeeds in bringing a smile on your face.

But the graph of the film does an about-turn in the second half. For, the focus suddenly shifts to the love story between the protagonist and the journalist and that's where it falters. The goings-on move at a sluggish pace and also get boring at this point because the romantic track is not well developed.

Also, the extreme reactions by Rahul's landlord and the boss, who throw Rahul out of the house and job after knowing he has become a sex star, are difficult to fathom. Even the climax is such an anti-climax. A better end should've been thought of.

Director Anant Balani has handled the light sequences with aplomb, but he is terribly handicapped by a weak screenplay. Music is functional, with just one song – 'Loot Gaye' [Anand Raaj Anand] – starying on your lips. Cinematography [Sanjay Nair] is up to the mark.

Rahul Bose delivers a competent performance yet again. The actor is getting better with each film. Perizaad Zorabian doesn't get any scope at all. Kaabir [Rahul Bose's friend] is excellent.

Amongst character actors, Vijay Raaz and Saurabh Shukla are first-rate. Both contribute enormously in making the first half watchable. Asrani is likeable. Bakul Thakkar leaves an impact in a small role.

On the whole, MUMBAI MATINEE has something for the classes, but nothing for the masses. At the box-office, the multiplex-audience may opt for the film out of curiosity, but the numbers will be very, very limited. Heavy usage of English language in the film may also restrict its prospects to an extent.

Rating:- *.

It's all about sex. In capital letters!

You got to have one kind of a funny bone to enjoy Mumbai Matinee.

The tsk-tsk-nudge-wink SMS jokes brigade will enjoy it immensely. Their parents, hmm. Not so sure.

Sex, with a big S dominates the film. Make that a big E and X too. Bollywood is growing up and it shows.

Gone are the anecdotal two flowers necking. Also out the window is the entire load of moral baggage that has come to be associated with the three-letter word.

Sex is an urge, an activity set off by the biological clock. The tick-tock can become quite loud if you are Debashish Chatterjee (Rahul Bose), 32 years old and still a virgin.

Image

And if you are Baba Hindustani (Vijay Raaz), a charlatan wearing the garb of a tantric, people like Chatterjee are the path to prosperity.

Between Debu and Baba, you have a clutch of interesting characters thrown in. A failed and distinctly Punjabi film producer (Saurabh Shukla), his good-looking lackey angling for a role, Baba's urbane secretary (Asrani), Debu's best pal and colleague (Kaabir), who has a fetish for female legs, their wig-toting boss and his secretary.

The mix of characters is electric, and many of the darkly humorous one-liners, liberally peppered with sexual innuendoes, have the audience chuckling.

The film has more than a few touches of surrealism. How Chatterjee, an agarbatti-lighting advertising executive, becomes a soft porn star is one such touch.

The key to the film are the superb actors chosen by the late director Anant Balani. It doesn't take long for a film with overt sexual content to degenerate into a skin fest. Bollywood is notorious for it.

To Balani's credit, the slapstick quotient, for most part, is well within permissible limits.

One reason could be that the author of the story is Balani himself. That, surely, must have helped him out in fleshing out his characters and giving them life. Balani, I guess, must have written the story while passing through a difficult phase in his life.

The film, for the discerning viewer, has layers of meaning embedded within it. All of it tries to unravel, in its own ways, what makes Mumbai tick.

For Chatterjee, as he finds out, the city ticks because there are no rules. But the film doesn't ram down its logic down the throat of the viewers. It leaves certain knots untied, and deliberately at that.

Joggers' Park may have pitchforked Perizaad Zorabian into the spotlight, but as journalist Sonali Verma, she is clearly playing the third fiddle in this film. How Debu and Sonali meet, discover each other and finally end up in bed, not out of lust but out of love, makes for a different taste and texture.

Apart from Rahul Bose, who looks every inch the diffident, self-conscious and 'uncomfortable around women' types, Shukla plays the gas bag producer with a good heart to the hilt. Such versatility is rare in Bollywood, and Shukla is one such rare commodity. Vijay Raaz and Asrani are competent.

Perizaad is different. Not a traditional stunner, but very attractive. She plays the role with a lot of verve. A complete natural in front of the camera, she lets nuances of body, eyes and facial expressions do the trick.

On the flip side, some situations of the film are a bit over the top, even after surrealism is taken into account. They show why Bollywood is still growing up, and not grown up.

Image

For instance the way Debu, his friend and their boss hang their tongues out every time the secretary crosses her leg. While on the subject, the entire characterisation of the secretary is stereotypical. Agreed all offices have their share of hotties, but then even the most blatant of them don't bat their eyelids or pout their lips like that.

The film is not everyone's cup of tea. If you are looking for a family entertainer, you are eyeing the wrong film. But if you want time out with your locker room buddies or with your girlfriend, Mumbai Matinee is the film.

This was a pretty funny and interesting movie. It ended rather abruptly but was entertaining nonetheless. Lots of laughs.

I'm glad you liked it. What did you think of that part...(Spoiler)....where he finds out that his push ups were actually configurated into a porn film with him making love to a women. I, personally was on the floor laughing non-stop at that moment. It was great.

That was hilarious. So many funny moments in the movie. Were Anant Balani's other films like Jogger's Park and 1 Din 24 Ghante as good?

I haven't seen either yet. A friend of mine saw Jogger's Park and she says it's a nice/clean little film. And I've read somewhere that 1 Din 24 Ghante is the original version to the remake of "Chameli". Though, I can't confirm this. But I have seen Chameli, which I have also liked, and I think it's the best film to come out of Bollywood so far this year, but than again, I've only seen 3-4 Bollywood films that released this year. Just another couple of weeks more, once my finals are over, than I'm watching films non-stop. First film on my list >> KILL BILL VOL.2
