Mother India in Nepalese - with Manisha Koirala.

Nearly five decades after the classic "Mother India" was filmed, the epic story of a village family's struggle will be remade in Nepalese - possibly starring Manisha Koirala.

However, the people associated with the remake say the original is a bit "bland" and would have to be jazzed up with more dance sequences to suit present-day tastes.

"The flavour would come from numbers in the style of nautanki (traditional Indian village dance) like in the Bollywood film 'Tisri Kasam'," an organiser said.


"Besides that, there will be no major changes," the organiser told IANS.

The starkly realistic "Mother India" directed by Mehboob Khan sees Radha's husband Shamu, played by Raj Kumar, leaving home in despair when his hands get crushed. Despite searching frantically for him, Radha is never reunited with him.

I wish they change that to uniting them in the end. Thru life or death.

I think these filmmakers should work on creating films that will be considered classics several years from now instead of remaking old ones.

It's more poignant that Raj Kumar and Nargis were never reunited. Besides, Having them reunite would have shifted to focus away from Nargis to the both of them. One of the points of the movie is that she is strong-willed enough to support her children without a husband in a society where the husband is considered the main provider in the family.

Also, I don't know if I would call this film "starkly realistic." Do Bigha Zameen comes closer IMO, but I don't think even Pather Panchali can have that tag.

Note that it's Nepalese making this film for Nepal, in Nepal. Just like, Indians have copoied so many films from other countries, Nepalese are making a film copied from India. Finally, some one is copying Indian Film for a change.

yeah, its not like a Bollywood filmmaker is remaking Mother India. I heard in Bollywood they are remaking Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam...or atleast thinking about it. I think that's ONE film that should be left alone...they will never be able to make it as good as the first one.

True, it is not India remaking it. But still, I wonder how good it is for a country with what I am assuming is a very small output of films to be remaking other another country's film. Hopefully it will be changed enough that it is its own film.
