I was listening to the radio yesterday, and they were talking about the fact that there are no official entries for the Oscars this year. When they were talking about the films put forward to be considered, there were a few names that I expected - Koi Mil Gaya, Jajantaram Mamantaram............but Andaaz was also in that list! I know none of them could have got close to winning an Oscar, but Andaaz?!?!?

I believe they sent "Devdas," but I also believe that it's sitting in one of the Academy's trash cans.

That was last year...Devdas was nominated at the BAFTA anyway - which is in many ways more credible than the Oscars.

It's the kind of thinking you might expect in a country where the majority of ppl are uneducated. At least for the US, they've got a seperate MTV awards for intellectually-challenged adolescents. :doze:

I haven't seen Jajantaram Mamantaram, but KOI MIL GAYA and ANDAAZ were CONSIDERED!?!?! ???
Those films are nothing more than pure entertainment.. :sus:

After thinking a while I get to the conclusion there really was no film that was good enough to be considered for the Oscars in 2003. Hope 2004 will change that. We have Maqbool (like someone said). And Mani Ratnam's YUVA and Farhan Akhtar's LAKSHYA are coming up... we'll see.

I read somewhere that Lakshya was invited for the Cannes festival this year. Could this be true?

Instead of DEVDAS they could've sent MR. AND MRS. IYER for the Oscars.

Does anyone know which film they sent in 2001 (for 2000) and the previous years. I'm just curious. :hmm:

The majority of films coming plus some of the people who send films for nominations have no clue, I mean Andaaz! Who would ever tolerate sitting through such as film, let alone nominate it? Only the Indian board can commit such blunders, which is probably why Indian films are not taken as seriously as European films.

Mr & Mrs Iyar wouldn't have got very far as only good by Indian standards - not enough for international audiences and a little pretentious.

The only type of films that could ever win are realistic films like Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding and maybe an exceptionally good bolywood films with no silly over-the-top comedy and a good script.

Before they have sent Lagaan, which was good enough to be nominated. The film that got through to nominations before that was Mother India...that was a very long time prior! India had been sucessfull in the the years in-between. I think Mera Naam Joker could've done well, maybe even Khamoshi and Chandni Bar.

Farhan Akhtar's next film Lakshya looks good, let's see if it will be good enough to put up for nominations.

Are any films even being made in India that can be taken seriously? I don't really care so much about winning an Oscar as I do about getting some quality films. Maybe Sanjay is seeing good ones that we aren't getting in the West because all people watch here is Yaadein, K3G, etc.?

error *India had been sucessfull in the the years in-between.*

This should read - India had NOT been sucessfull in the the years in-between.

btw, Who is Sanjay?

Even though Yaadein, K3G are popular in the west, it doesn't make them great films. I get your point, that a good film may not be a popular film and we may never get to see them, but I think if India will ever get nominated they need to push the few decent films they produce and that does not include over-gloss like Devdas. Largely most of the films made are to keep the masses happy as well as NRI's. But I know for a fact that alot of the young asians born in the UK want to see good films with good acting and less cheesyness.

But I still think alot of the people in power have little idea of what makes a great film to send, the evidence shows when only films like Lagaan and Mother India ever got nominated but then again this was probably due to their popularity at the time that they were even put forward, not the fact that they were exceptional. In the case of Devdas, India seems to have pushed the most expensive and over-hyped film of the time as they thought it stood a chance - that the academy would be won over by it's colourfull set design and expensive budget.

Sanjay is a poster here, from Mumbai IIRC, so I thought he might get to see good films that aren't shown in the West.

I don't mind films that are made for masala entertainment as long as there are interesting and creative alternatives. Euro Trip can exist along with The Fog of War :) The problem is that in Indian cinema the films seem to be made only for the masala crowd or the NRI crowd, so those who want something that isn't either retreads of tired formulas or remakes of Hollywood and Indian films have to look outside of India for good films. Occasionally something interesting like Pinjar will come along, and this year I'm looking forward to Lakshya and Ayudha Ezhudhu/Yuva, but I'm not going to watch Janasheen in the mean time :)

Lagaan was an extremely well made commercial Indian musical film, but like another foreign language nominee that year, Amelie, it wasn't exactly the most profound film.

I didn't say that masala films shouldn't be made or that I don't ever watch them, but that's the vast majority of India's film output. Glossy, over-the-top mass entertainers certainly are important, but that's the only thing ever being produced.

Mediocre films are made in Hollywood too (just look at January), but there are also good films, so those who don't want to see a masala movie at any given time aren't completely left in the dark. Which goes back to why we can't seem to pick anything decent to submit to the Oscars. It's not necessarily that they're considering Devdas and Andaaz over some world-class films, its that these films rarely seem to get made in the first place. I doubt Maqbool will ever play in many theaters here in America, yet most SRK films will play for weeks on end
:baaa:

That's sort of my point, that the audiences seem to be happy with the same old crap. Being proud of one's heritage has nothing to do with it. If these filmmakers are so damn proud of their heritage, they should be adapting Indian novels and stories, old and new, instead of constantly copying Hollywood. It seems we have to wait through 1000 crummy movies to get to the Pinjars and Siddharthas.

Do we all know what democracy is--Majority rules -therefore the ones that buys the movie tickets gets the sahre of what movies they want to see. That is fair enough..Instead of complaining one should make it happen-If someone wants a special kind of movie made that person can take the lead and get it made..Take Janasheen for example--I have heard so much bad reviews but I still watched it and did enjoy it..Feroze Khan has put his money where his mouth is..Every one else can do the same-or just SHUT UP=

Okay, now that's ridiculous. You know how much money it costs to make a movie? Feroz Khan could make Janasheen because he was a big actor/producer/director once and has the money to make it. It's a lot more difficult than saying, "put your money where your mouth is." If it was that easy, anyone could run for President, make a movie, start a company, etc.

Even Ralph Nader has more money and fame than most people. Movies CAN be made cheaply, but even a cheap movie is still way too much money for most regular people to just go out and make it.

My point is that crummy movies are produced mostly, and the occasional good ones that garner some attention at international film festivals, such as Anaahat and Nizhalkutthu (Malayalam) are ignored. Then we wonder why we can't get anything nominated for an Oscar. Also, it isn't an either/or situation for good movies. Remember parallel cinema? Just as there was Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, there was also Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray. We don't even need films that are quite at that level of artiness, just some good stories that have very little interesting in them. Hell, even mainstream Hollywood can do that. Feel-good, aim-to-please mass entertainers that don't take any risks can co-exist with more creative films.
