Dilip Kumar mulled opening tea stall

Some imnteresting excerpts:

A legend in his own lifetime Dilip Kumar wanted to run a tea stall in Mumbai in the mid-forties, fearing his acting career in the film world may not last long.

Worried that he was being overpaid and nervous about how long his acting career would last, Dilip Kumar applied for a licence to run a tea stall in Crawford Market in Mumbai where his father ran a wholesale fruit business.

One Mr Flanders, the film star recalls, was incharge of issuing licences, according to a book on the legendary actor Nehru's Hero: Dilip Kumar in the Life of India, written by Lord Meghnad Desai. It, however, does not mention whether the licence was issued to him.

Kumar recalls that he feared his father would not have approved of his appearance in films under the family name. So Narendra Sharma, the resident writer and poet at Bombay Talkies, offered him three options for his nom d'ecran.

These were: Vasudev, Jehangir and Dilip Kumar. He chose Dilip Kumar himself, rather than the Muslim name Jehangir or the other Hindu name Vasudev----

Yusuf Khan's renaming as Dilip Kumar showed that neither Devika Rani nor Dilip Kumar thought that a Muslim with a Muslim name would be commercially acceptable as a star unlike these days when Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan not only retain their original names but are thriving.

However, in his entire career, he has played a Muslim character only once and that was in the historical epic Mughal-e-Azam in which he acted as Prince Salim, Mughal Emperor Akbar's son and heir.

Wasn't it like this that Saira was to marry someone and her mother dis-approved. Saira said, she'll give up her choice, only for Dilip Kumar. That is when Saira's mother approached Dilip??

"Islam in danger" *LOL* Did they really talk like this, or is it really just cos the mother thought that Dilip Kumar was the only man good enough for her daughter! With that kind of mentality I guess Nargis must've been a disgrace to all of them!

And a good thing too! Pheeeeww! Imagine if that did not happened and she married Rajendra we would've a "GADAR" situation here! and more of Sunny Deol :D This would have been a sure entry for the Oscars :D

But isn't Waheeda a muslim too? I don't know if Dilip Kumar had any kids with Saira, but I think Waheeda was much better looking, anyway. He missed out.

I personally think, he missed out!! e was trying to PROPOGATE a MUSLIM GENERATIOn, that UNFORTUNATELY did not happen!

Don't know about that I think he made the right choice considering Madam N Bano was only 5 years older than him meaning he got a young thing practically reaching in the craddle!:D
