Rajkumar Santoshi: The Storm Shall Pass
Khakee’s hasn’t done much great business and the facing the flak is director Rajkumar Santoshi. Trade analyst maintain Santoshi is an expensive director and if the film does not fare well at the box-office the distributors suffer losses and it does become an issue of concern whether such expensive films should be made at all. Santoshi hasn’t actually had a hit since Damini. He is currently working on Prithviraj Samyukta. Producer Keshu Ramsay has also signed him for a venture under his banner.

I don't understand, what do they call Box Office success.

Khakee collected:

BOMBAY ckt: 4 cr in its first week where as it was sold for 2.75 cr only.

DELHI ckt: 2.56 cr in its first week where as it was sold for 2.75 cr.

CP BERAR ckt: 0.81 cr in its first week where as it was sold for 1.0 cr.

SOUTH ckt: 1.04 cr in its first week where as it was sold for 1.4 cr.

Assuming a 40% drop in 2nd week, as reported in box office circles, it would have recovered cost plus decent profit in 2 weeks.

What more is expected??

I was walking out of the cinema just while the film was ending and didn't read all the text for the conclusion, but what I caught was something like 'If Thushars character had killed Devgan, he would be no different and the rep of the police force would go down'...though I may be mistaken. I know he shot Devgan twice, but Devgan was injured and still breathing, so it didn't appear that he died. If his character did die, then I think he died too easy, considering the amount of people he killed, you need to dish out the right amount of punishment to the bad guy to satisfy the audience.

I don't know if RKS did a Sholay-style double ending for this?

I saw the same. I thought Ajay was shown to have died. May be not convincingly and hence the story can continue.

Status of Hit, Overflow, Coverage or flop is given according to it's Box Office collections as compared to its price. Sometimes, they declare Hit or Flop based on expected earnings and some times based on how much it actually earned so far.

Obviously, going by the 2nd criterion, all films are flops for first few weeks untill they recover their cost. Staus changes from flop in the beginning to coverage to overflow to Hit and so on, as the time passes and collections are added up.

Based on the first criterion, all films are Hits untill released and then comes the judgement period.



Anyway, Boxofficeindia is reporting that Khakee is expected to make it to 'HIT' staus for Mumbai territory.

Khakee seems safe all over except for CI.The film may reach hit status in Mumbai.Its been a disastrous January with 10 releases and just one earner in Khakee.

The same way LOC was counted as Flop, but now they are calling it 'COVERAGE' as the cumulative earnings over the past few weeks have crossed its cost.

Rediff, after placing KHAKEE at # 3 behind Paap and Maqbool, has brought KHAKEE to # 1 again, in it's 3rd week. This tells something about KHAKEE Box Office power. Even though they call it average (it hasn't earned enough to be called HIT), it sure keeps on bringing in revenues and most likely will make it to Hit status by the time its Box Office run ends.

Khakee

Detailed characterisation of every actor. AB's first rate performance

Too many action scenes in the first half.

Munnabhai MBBS

Good humour, funny dialogues.

Totally Mumbai-oriented.

Maqbool

Cast: Tabu, Irrfan, Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Masumi
Director: Vishal Bharadwaj
Superb performances, technically sound direction.

Slow paced, will appeal only a niche audience.

Paap

Director: Pooja Bhatt
Good music and locations.

Poor performances, bad voice modulations.

Great performances, film shows the darker side of love.

Script is too convenient and does not offer explanations for things like Urmila's competence with a gun, shadowing people and killing.

Well-written, good direction and performances.

Excessive melodrama and nothing for rural centres.

BO Verdict: Super Hit

Plan

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Dino Morea, Sanjay Suri, Bikram Saluja, Rohit Roy, Mahesh Manjrekar, Priyanka Chopra, Sameera Reddy, Riya Sen, Payal Rohatgi
Director: Hriday Shetty
Good chemistry between the four boys, great performance from Sanjay Dutt.

Slack in the second half. Once Dutt makes his entry, the others fade into the background.

Another Box Office report raising KHAKEE's Box Office Performance:

It's alredy declared, in major territories, a Hit in Mumbai territory, and Semi Hit in Delhi-UP and in Rajasthan territories. Obviously improved a lot from initial disaster reports.

Another week and another upgrade in Box Office Status.

Now they call it just 2 cr short of Hit status. It has made 29 cr already and still running in theatres (including overseas theatres), doing better than many newer releases.

4th week collections : 80,79,629 from 63 cinemas (reported)

4 weeks total (calculated) All India : 24.40 - 24.45 cr ( likely to be revised )

Overseas approximately 5 cr

Verdict - ´Khakee´ is above average (as per trade classifications) or semi-hit as some may say and is no longer loosing even in CI, hit in Bombay, CP and Rajasthan, Sem-Hit in Delhi-UP and South and above average to average in the remaining. HOWEVER, the hit mark is still a couple of crores away.
