Guys
can anyone confirm that these dvds are really progressive.
Thirumalai is not. I have Boys, Jay Jay and Ottran but nothing says on the cover that it is.
I doubt that Ayngaran would omit to put that on the cover, knowing that it is somthing new in Indian dvd industry and thus adding product value...

count the frames and your answer lies there.

I used the frames count using step button on remote to confirm they are progressive. This test confirmed iDream Telugu DVD Lakshmi Kataksham also to be Progressive as told to me by Prasad Labs. But a guy here claims he doesn't see Progressive FLAG set when he plays on his Panasonic DVD Player.

How do you do this test? On my Sony ES Player, I couldn't find anything to find flag is set or not. But Once you set Video to progressive on DVD Player, I see Progressive light is on for all types of DVDs.

If the flags are set, even the cheapest Progressive DVD player can play the DVD in Progressive mode.

If the flags are missing or have erroneous flags, better Progressive DVD players look for other clues to find the original 24 frames. Like finding the 2-3 repeat pattern (pixel by pixel comparison) and then processing accordingly.

If the DVD player shows Progressive light 'ON', it's good enough.

If one DVD player recognizes it as Progressive and the other as not, just means the (failed) DVD player didn't succed in finding the original 24 frames.

The Progressive Light STAYS on for this DVD and even few other DVDs I tested that were Telecined directly to NTSC. I will check with few inferior quality DVDs and see if the light goes OFF!

I bought the dvds for Jay Jay, Pitamagan and Thithikuddhe yesterday.

Thithikudde is interlaced (AWESOME movie though) while Jay Jay seems progressive for the few scenes I've seen from it. I'll make some screen caps from all the dvds soon and send it to Rana or sknath.

In regards to the Panasonic DVD Players, one has to physically push the progressive button on to get the green light. I own a Panasonic cp-72 and I had to do this, and the light stays on for all DVDs even Indian DVDs that one knows are not progressive. One would have though Panasonic would have made the progressive light automatically turn on if the movie was progressive then stay off if the DVD you were playing was not progressive. I ran tests with my panasonic playing American DVDs like Jurassic Park III collectors edition, which looked outstanding in progressive mode hen playing LOC a world of a difference.

This means, this DVD player will output a Progressive (60 full frames per sec) signal, no matter what the source. Like, using Power DVD in Auto select or in Force BOB mode; where no matter what signal, as it has to be viewed on Progressive monitor, it has to be converted to a progressive signal, using whatever algorithm.
