Making MUSIC through Meenaxi

Mumbai, January 13: THE arresting promo of artist M F Husain’s Meenaxi—releasing early March—is already on air. Husain has poured so much energy into the film’s music that it emerges as the film’s soul. So much so that each song, composed by A R Rahman, has a tiny story wrapped around its birth.

Noorain Allah Noor: This qawwali is shot in pouring rain, but Husain himself wrote its lyrics within the antiseptic walls of a hospital. Stuck in a bed with a gall bladder problem early last year, the artist put words to this song.

Rang Hai: She may have had four stitches in her leg after a freak accident from her Bengali film Abar Aranyer. But during the song’s picturisation, the actress burst into dance, despite the pain. Sung by Lebanese singer Dalinda and real world music artist Hassam Ramzi, Tabu calls the song “divine”.

Song in a bordello: It features the magical combination of Sukhwinder and Rahman again (remember Chaiya Chaiya from Dil Se?). But before its recording, Sukhwinder asked if he could change into a sexy netted black vest, to get into the mood! The song has choreographer Remo dancing with the lead actor, good-looker Kunal Kapoor.

Yeh Rishta: If the qawwali was born in a hospital, Yeh Rishta bloomed in an impromptu session in... the kitchen! Brand new singer Reena Bharadwaj was invited to Rahman’s studio apartment in London and the genius recorded its catchy scratch amidst his pots and pans.

Dhuan Dhuan: Asha Bhonsle cut her holiday short to record a song for M F, that too for free. In return, the artist presented her with one of his famous horses on canvas (that comes for anything between Rs 80,000 and Rs 1 lakh).

Arsh bhai there's a hidden story behind all of this Rahman stuff, especially with him re-making his tamil songs. A lot of it is not is fault at all!

This message is by Saif from the indolink forum in regards to this:
*****************
For Lakeer...out of the 6 only 3 songs have been dubbed from Tamil, and it wasn't ARR's decision either...Vashu Bhagnani bought the rights for 3 songs from ARR's Tamil album Rhythm, without ARR's permission or knowledge ..the producers changed but the songs remained with the director...in such cases ARR is 'forced' to be a part of the movie...the 3 original songs are bad, simply cuz ARR would never say yes to such a movie but had to compose them cuz his name got involved...same thing with Saathiya, Shaad Ali wanted to use the same songs from Alai Payuthey and Mani Ratnam agreed, but ARR had absolutely no say in that...even for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, Webber wanted to use ARR's previous hits.. ARR insisted and told him that he can compose fresh new tunes, but Webber being the producer wouldn't budge from his decision...the way things work in the music industry is so messed up, the songs remain the property of the producers and they can sell/buy the rights anytime and can use these songs in any way they want - this sometimes has a negative effect on the MDs ..and ARR has gained the reputation of being repetitive and lazy and whatnot -- all for no fault of his

With that said and done, ARR has re-used his Tamil songs a few times (out of his own decision i.e.), but only when its absolutely necessary...I think he has dubbed only 4 songs so far, like Milgayee Milgayee - Kabhi Na Kabhi (Anjali Anjali - Duet), Jumbalika - Thakshak (Jumbalakka - En Swasa Kaatre), Gurus of Peace - Vande Mataram (song from Karuthamma) and Ek Tu Hi Bharosa - Pukar (some Malay song he specially composed for a concert in Malaysia)...all the rest of the songs have been re-used based on the producers' decision. :nopity:

***************
It doesn't surprise me one bit, because Rahman proved he is a powerhouse when it comes to making music, but when you're recycling your music based on producers/directors requests or from buying the rights, there's not much u can do....

As it is, Rahman has some huge albums coming up where none of the songs will be remade. Needless to say, Rahman will show everyone what he's truly made of!

Lakeer songs taken from Rhythm:

Nachley = Land (Thaniye Thaniye)
Paighaam = Wind (Kaatre En Vaasal Vandhai)
Uffo Jalta Hai = Fire (Aiyo Pathikichu)

http://www.tamilsongs.net/page/build/al ... index.html

The songs have sort of a South Indian flavor, particularly Wind, and they sound weird with Hindi lyrics.

http://www.boxup.com/gb/music/album/200 ... um3111.htm

A friend of mine sent me this website. The site is in chinese, but if you go near the bottom and see where it says "Disk 1"...you can listen to the songs...either in RealMedia or Winamp format by clicking on the icons across from the names.

IMO the album is more of instrumental style fans, not necessarily those looking for a bollywood album. I'd say this stuff is in the same league as Lord of the Rings, that style of music. Take a listen!
