BEGUM Abida Parveen is often considered as the successor to the legacy of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and has won many hearts when she expressed Sufi mysticism and its depth.

Here are the lyrics of her famous ghazal, Dhoondo Ge Agar Mulkon Mulkon

Dhoondo Ge Agar Mulkon Mulkon
Milne Ke Nahin Nayaab Hain Hum
Tabeer Hai Jiski Hasrat-0-Gham
Aye Humnafaso Woh Khwaab Hain Hum

Aye Dard Bata Kuch Tu Hi Pata
Ab Tak Yeh Mu’ammya Hal Na Hua
Hum Mein Hain Dil-E-Betaab Nihan
Yah Aap Dil-E-Betaab Hain Hum

Main Hairat-O-Hasrat Ka Maara
Khamosh Khada Hoon Sahil Par
Dariya-E-Mohabbat Kehta Hai
“Aa Kuch Bhi Nahin Payaab Hain Hum”

Lakhon Hi Musafir Chalte Hain
Manzil pohunchte Hain Do Ik
Aye Ahl-E-Zamana Qadr Karo
Nayaab Na Hon Kamyaab Hain Hum

Murghan-E-Qafas Ko Phoolon Ne
Aye Shaad Ye Kahla Bheja Hai
Aa Jao Jo Tum Ko Aana Ho
Aise Mein Abhi Shadaab Hain Hum

The poetry requires AARKAYNE standard translation, but the English lyrics below may suffice for now.

:)

Even if you search from nation to nation
You won’t find me, for I’m an extinct rarity.
O friend! I am that dream which can only be
Interpreted through your desires and grief.

O grief! Now you give me some clue
For this puzzle isn’t solved yet,
Whether a restless heart is concealed within me
Or I myself is a restless heart

I, in a state of awe and regret
Stand quietly at the shore,
The river of love expresses
"come, I'm only a shallow” [rivulet]

Thousand of travellers embark on journey
But only a few of them reach the destination.
O my contemporaries! Revere me for I'm,
If not extinct, a rare [kind of] being.

O Shaad! The flowers have dispatched
This message to the captive birds,
"Come if you so desire
For, at the moment, we're very fresh."

I love Gulzar's introduction to songs and ghazals. I have his CD, Fursat Ke Raat Din, and his commentary gives a new meaning to famous songs like Phirse Aaiyo Badra Bidesi (Namkeen), Naam Gum Jayega (Kinara) and Mera Kuch Samaan (Ijaasat).

I will definetely look our for the titles you mentioned, especially the album of Gulzar and Abida Begum together.

:)

CHAIYA CHAIYA OPENS NEW VISTAS

The fever and passion of "Chaiya Chaiya" has certainly opened new dimension in Indian entertainment industry. The musical interests of Indian Pop Generation have been flip-flopping for years. From disco, jazz, pop, rock, reggae and rap the scenario has shifted to one of the most ethnic singing Indian culture--Sufi Music. It was couplets from Baba Bulleshah, which was modulated by thespian Gulzar and beautifully composed by magical maestro A.R.Rahman that set the trend for this unique musical work. Among the top selling singers are late Ustad Nusrat Ali Khan and Abida Parveen.

Bollywood has made most out of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's works as Madhuri's hot favorite number "Mera Piya Ghar Aaya" has a strong hangover of his earlier work. Recently, there was another noticeable Sufi work "Allah Ke Bande" from 'Waisa Bhi Hota Hai (Part-II)' sung appreciably by Kailash Kher. Sufi music magic had a strong foothold in metros as Muzaffar Ali organised events like "Jehan-e-Khusrau" at Arab ki Sarai near Humayun's Tomb in New Delhi. Sufi musicians like Nizami Brothers' annual concert "Banayan Tree's Ruhaniyat" are awaited in Mumbai. Abida Parveen's albums "Songs of the Mystics" and "Nusrat's traditional Sufi Qawaalis Volume 2" were biggest chartbusters. Punjabi Pop singers like Wadali Brothers, Hansraj Hans and Jasbir Jassi have also adopted Sufi music. Sufi music has a feel of one-ness of the Almighty and spread the message of love and peace from the essence of lyrics. It empowers human soul to discover divinity with a pure heart.

Interesting article - I think I will get some of the mentioned Sufi Music audios...

Monizam - I can't imagine truck drivers into Ghazal Music, but I am glad you approve of the translation.

Has anyone heard Rizwan-Muazzam? I believe they are the nephews or grandnephews or something of NFAK. I listened to the CD at Borders and it was pretty good.

 Armaan, thats impossible to live up to.

I have not heard this song, so I shall actively look for it yet. But YOUR translation inspired me to try one of my own...please pardon any errors and omissions, and THANK YOU for setting me up on this :) Your grasp of Urdu is impeccable.

Set forth a search party, village, county, nation-wide,
Without a yield returned, thus rare an entity,
Found but within desire and grief,
My companions, I am but a dream.

Sweet agony pray show me the way,
This muddle of a riddle, lies unsolved,
Does inside me beat a restless heart?
Or is my entire being simply restive?

Worn down by grief, here I am so glum,
On the quietened shores of love,
Beckoning encouragement, simply,
‘Come swim with me, where ‘tis yet shallow’.

Millions of travellers set out,
An odd couple make their destiny,
Hark upon my very being,
Not yet extinct, just a rarefied kind.

Even to birds in captivity,
O Shaad, this message the blossoms send,
Come along if you will,
Find freshness galore.
