After DISAPPOINTING RELEASE of LOC..I can say Year 2003 is really bad for BOLLYWOOD music!!

Jism, is the only MUSIC worth of mentioning as in its own class..IMHO..Kudos to M. M. Karem(another great hit after SUR in year 2002)

A R REHMAN..Tehzeeb is GOOD but failed to recreat his magic of SAATHIYA!!

N-S..Andaaz..got popular, Footpath etc were all wash out, Zinda dil, Hungama, Qayamat..

Anu Malik..after a GREAT 2002..gave us, KHUSHI, MPKDH, SAAYA, INTEHA, SHH..., ISHQ VISHK, LOC..Non of them met with his previous quality albums, like ASOKA, Filhaal..etc..
Saaya was GOOD, to some extent, courtesy title, M. M. Karem song, and ISHQ VISHK, was popular peppy..MPKDH..controversial..LOC..is not worth it!!Muna Bhaii MBBS..is terrible!!

J-L..gave us HAASIL..small film..ok music..CC became hit..with Adish Shrivastav,, with its own limitations.

Shrivastav..had good year..with CC and BAGHBAN..

Himesh Reshmaya..Did Well, with TERE NAAM..followed by Zameen..

Anand Raj..anand, could not creat magic of KAANTE with his PLAN..

RAM SAMPAT..new be..gave popular music of KHAKEE..

SEL...did ARMAAN, KNK, KHNH, EAEG..out of that IMHO EAEG had the freshness..rest..simillar to rehmanish repeated tunes..

KHNH..they tried to be J-L kinda Mohabtaen/DDLJ/KKHH kinda music, but IMHO, worst for Karan Johar film..

Rajesh Roshan..gave KMG, that besides fiting in the film, was not on par with his previous music for his BRO..his latest AITBAR..not a WORTHY affair anyways..

SMALL FILMS worth mentioning for GOOD MUSIC was CHUPKE SE, RULES, PINJAR etc..BHOOT had GOOD experimental..sound track, but was not part of the film..Jhankar Beats, Joggers Park, also worthy mention

*** BOTTOM LINE..END OF YEAR..went without, a run away hit..LIKE DEVDAS/KAANTE/SUR...IMHO

:baaa: ??? :hmm:

Very good points, although I don't think it's been a terrible year. Certainly not up there in the leagues of a 2001 or 1998, but... hmmm, the more I think about it, the more I agree. Well, in any case, it's clear that music directors are having a harder time trying to be original.

Anu Malik is certainly on overdrive; a few songs in Khushi were good. LoC was a disappointment, but quite frankly, I was expecting it to be. The man gave us Refugee, which was one of the best sountracks ever. I don't know if the man will ever top that for the rest of his life. I think it's sort of a once in a lifetime thing.

My favourite album of the year is Tehzeeb unsurprisingly, followed by Armaan at a close second. Also worthy of mention are Kuch Na Kaho, Koi Mil Gaya, Chalte Chalte, Khushi, and some others I can't recall.

If you ask me, I'm MORE disappointed in this year's crop of films. Bollywood really is regressing, which is surprising considering the terrific 2001 (Lagaan, Zubeidaa, Asoka, Dil Chahta Hai, Monsoon Wedding, etc, etc) we had. I'm going to have a hard time making my top ten this year, I really am.

I agree with you Kamran...Films have been terribly below phenomenal status too..

We have to see, KHNH..that will be HIT, one way or the other!!Timing/SRK/Masala/Candy Floss..

LOC...seems, gone to next year? if not? I am not much OPTIMISTIC..

Tehzeeb..

Plan...
Khakee..

Wait and see!!

For Music..I think, Anu Malik's Refugee was not one time, but seems like ONE..it was PHENOMENAL sound track..he did EXCELLENT, KAREEB for V CHOPRA, but now Crappy Muna Bhaii..

Last Year, he did GOOD JOB withASOKA and FILHAAL IMHO..

IMHO..I would rate:

1. Jism

2. Tehzeeb

3. Saaya

4.Armaan

5.Rules

5.EAEG

6. Khakee

Followed by BAGHBAN, Chupke se, Pinjar, Boom..(experimental), BHOOT!

I got the CD of LOC as soon as it was released, but not had a chance to listen to it yet........from what you guys are saying, it doesn't sound too good......I'm hoping it grows after repeated listenings!!!!!

LocKargil music isn't that half bad. Yes, it's not on par with the class of Border or Refugee. But the 12 mintues 46 second song "Main Kahin Bhi Rahoon" is an absolute audaciously sung song. One of the best songs I've heard all year long, If Border had "Sandesh Sa Aata Hain", which eventually made the album what it was and pretty much other songs (while also good) paled in comparison. To my taste, "Main Kahin Bhi Rahoon" will do the same for LocKargil.

I liked INTEHA music.

IMHO, Inteha music is second to none in the last few years. So much so, that since the Inteha DVD arrived, I have played songs from this movie DVD, I don't remember how many times.

Janasheen has an okay soundtrack. Better than I was expecting. FYI, Biddu is one of the MDs.

The Baghban songs are mediocre. The Chopras seem to have mastered the art of hit movies with crappy music :)

I haven't been impressed with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's efforts since DCH. Mission Kashmir and Abhay had their moments and KHNH has some decent songs, but I'm still waiting for another album from them that will be as fresh as DCH. I'm glad Karan Johar didn't go with Jatin-Lalit for KHNH.

Tamil film music has been a little better. Boys was very good, and I am one of the few who liked Parasuram. "Elangathu Veesudhe" and "Adadaa" from Pithamagan are good, especially the former, which I've been listening to a lot. Udaya and Vetri were blah.

I agree since DCH, SEL, could not come up with a FRESH /ORIGINAL sound track..But when director want music to sound like DDLJ/KKHH then? :nopity:

IMHO, all of their releases in 2003 had heavy hangover from their OLD music..except EAEG..that I personally thought was PRETTY GOOD for SEL..

If they r not asked to CHURN another DCH..they can do better!!imho

I cannot believe someone liked the music of 'Inteha'. I thought it was pretty bad when I saw the film, but maybe I was wrong.

The only good soundtracks this year are 'JISM' and 'TEHZEEB'. Nothing else comes close. Even 'Saaya' had only one really great track ('O Saathiya') and the rest was pretty standard. Much awaited Bhatt films music like the CDs for 'Footpath' were quite bad too.

In my opinion, the only FULL ALBUMS that deserve the title of MASTERPIECE in the last few years have been :

1. JISM : Every song is a classic, even the ones that have been repeated, such as 'Awarapan'.

2. REFUGEE : Nothing comes close to the beauty of this score, try as hard as one might.

3. DEVDAS : True, the songs hold up better when you watch the film, but it still manages to play through without you reaching for the skip button.

4. AUR PYAR HO GAYA : Very underrated soundtrack, but the songs were amazing, especially 'Ye Samaan ye nazaare' and the beautiful 'Mere Saanson Main'. Every song is a gem.

5. DHAI AKSHAR PREM KE : I loved Anuradha Paudwal on this CD, esp on the title track and on the beautiful 'Mera Maahi Bada sona hain'.

6. ZUBEIDAA : Rahman's work of genius. 'Dheeme Dheeme' stands out in particular.

Any others?
