No Indian film at the Oscars

rediff.com Entertainment Bureau | September 26, 2003 18:39 IST

The year 2003 may be a good year for the Hindi film industry at the box office with hits like Bhoot, Chalte Chalte and Koi... Mil Gaya. Unfortunately, not so at the 76th annual Academy Awards.

This year, no Indian film will be nominated for the Oscars in the foreign languages category.

The Film Federation of India was given only six Hindi films to choose from: Koi... Mil Gaya, Gangaajal, Jajantaram Mamantaram, Jhankaar Beats, Andaaz and Joggers' Park. None of them was selected as the official Indian entry for the Oscars.

Last year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas was India's official entry to the prestigious awards, but it did not win a nomination.

In 2001, the Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan had won an Oscar nomination, making it the third Indian film to do so after Mother India (1957) and Salaam Bombay (1988). Unfortunately, Lagaan lost out to Bosnia's No Man's Land.

*** Unhiki film churakar unhi ka award mangna, is pathetic disgrace!IMHO

Are you f***ing kidding me?! That's a terrible selection.

Why not pick some films from some other languages? What about Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Nizhalkuthu?
:stupid: :ffs: :nopity:

I wouldn't put Tera Naam in thier as the original Sethu was far more better and didn't get a shot at any awards in India or abroad.

There are shite loads of Indian films that could go to the Oscars...Nizhalkuthu is a good choice, a great film with a tragic plot line!

Adoor's movies always get lot of national awards but why the Film Board refuses to send his movies to Oscar is beyond me. May be his movies don't have enough cheesey special effects and some Bollywood star acting like a retard.
I want somebody to make hard hitting movies like 'city of god' and then send them to oscar.

:nervous: I can't believe they send in ANDAAZ.

How about Teen Deewarein? That was an amazing film.

Damnit.

KMG has both. Literally! :)

City of God was terrific. I think the last Indian film I saw with that kind of impact on me was Satya. Wasn't that the year we submitted Jeans?

They didn't submit it, but it is saddening to think they were even thinking about submitting it.

Good film, but one thing about the film was very similar to The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Too much so for AMPAS to consider it IMO.

WHAT???

What about 3 Deewarein, Armaan, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (was this eligble?)?! And what about the ones yet to come like Pinjar, Taj Mahal and L.O.C.? Anyone one of these would have been a respectable choice...

Anyways, thank god nothing was chosen out of that pathetic list.

Mr. and Mrs. Iyer was last year's film. Armaan, in my opinion, wasn't worthy either.

I'm not sure why Nagesh Kukunoor didn't send his film for consideration.

Because it has a heavy SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION hangover. Voters probably would not appreciate it since the former got several nominations in '94.

By the way, I'm not saying ARMAAN deserved a nomination - it was average at best - but at least it should have been in the running instead of those awful films. Hell, even CHALTE CHALTE would have been a respectable choice over the atrosity that was ANDAAZ. My eyes... my eyes...

IMO Teen Deewarien would have and should have been the ONLY choice. Or perhaps Joggers Park for its innovative storyline, but otherwise very disappointing!

Andaaz and KMG might be huge hits here in this industry, but they are FAR from anything close to anything that could meet international standards!
