I see alot of contempt here for Eros, who I thought was a decent DVD producer, the Eros DVDs I have actually look and sound great.

The ones I have are

Sholay ( the remastered one, with 5.1 and the menus are beautiful and the picture being almost 30 yrs, is vibrant and very good)

I know there was quit a few pirate Eros DVDs of Sholay out (this is back in 98 these dvds said Eros on it but I don't think they were made by Eros, and then some time in 99 or so Eros came up with a remastered Sholay DVD which is the one I have, I heard it was sold out in the market for a while and you could only the pirate, I'm not sure which one is still there in the market.

Lawaris: same quality as Sholay

Muqaddar Ka Sikander: ditto

Sharabi: ditto

So maybe I'm missing something here, and its not like use them on a small display, I have a 50" and a 110" and on the 110" any artifacts and even the smallest bas PQ comes alive, and the Sholay was beautiful on it also.

So let me in this secret...of Eros Bashing..

Veej welcome to the forums - on your other thread you say you are a member of DVD Talk and HTR, and other HT/DVD forums - you must own or seen a few non-Indian DVDs - how do they compare with Eros DVDs?

Ali,,to be honest, have you seen the movie Chicago (brilliant movie man) but the picture is not the greatest, now this is a brand spanking new movie....

So having Sholay being 30 yrs, Lawaris- 20 odd yrs and the BW budget/care compared to Hollywood I think Sholay and the Lawaris is way better, than todays Chicago DVD weird but when I watch Sholay on my 110" it looks brilliant man compared to Chicago with its colors looking soft in some parts and so on.

Look at what came out with the Original Scarface ( I had that one traded it with-in a couple of months) this DVD could make alot pirated BW dvds seem like gold.

Goodfellas: traded this one also even though its one of my favourite movies, still waiting for an SE with better quality

Casino: Ditto

So I'm not say BW and Eros have a right, but honestly man my Sholay and Lawaris are beutiful dvds I put them up there with some of my best HW stuff..

veej, you said you got Lawaris and Sholay in 1999. That's why you got good DVDs. They were authored by DEI in those days. They were Film mode (Progressive) DVDs. Check, if your DVD has DEI labels or DEI logo in the beginning. Is your Sholay DVD 1.85:1 or 4:3??

After EROS split with DEI, their DVDs have been Video mode DVDs (Interlaced) and the quality has gone down hill.

BTW, EROS did come up with a Director's cut version of SHOLAY (4:3) after their split with DEI. It is not as good as DEI-EROS version in PQ, but it does contain about double the picture area (more picture on all 4 sides) than the DEI-EROS version and also, it's an un-cut director's version that Indian censors didn't allow in India. Ending is different too.

Rana this could be true, and Sholay and Lawaris are wide screen not 4:3, I have not bought any original Hindi DVDs other than these and Sharabi which is fare also.

Now I just rent them, and buy Song DVDs the last movie DVD I bought was a Pirated K3G and quality is amazing even on a 110" screen, ( I put it on as a show-off dvd for guest) colors a vibrant in the songs and sound is 5.1 with clarity.

Thats why I'm also interesed in the DDLJ but this guy wants
$35 CAD. And hearing about the flimsy box and all the other stuff makes me hesitate...

Veej, why don't you try some of Amitabh Bachchan's comparatively less popular titles released by Eros, and you would know instantly know why members of this forum complain about Eros...

With regard to this, I recommend the following titles:

Dostana (1980) with Zeenat Aman
Majboor (1974) with Parveen Babi
Kasauti (1974) with Hema Malini
Khoon Pasina (1977) with Rekha

SD :- comes in flashes....
DEI - Bankrupt (now named as BEI..pro'ly the best out there, but for the fact that the media they use is faulty )

B4U :- Mo***** *****s (u can figure that out)

YRF :- same as above ( except maybe a few titles like DDLJ, DTPH, KKHH, Mohabbatein, K3G)

The Pirates :- oh yeah... they really make a difference, but now that you have DVD burners, why pay someone else to rip stuff for you :D

...at least Yash Raj's dvds are less likely to have manufacturing defect, like BEI faulty discs. It seems there is no perfect manufacturer at the moment. But Yash Raj's prices are hard to forgive!
