EROS 2 disc song compilations (cvontaining 100 songs) are on sale or go on 24 hour sale at IW for $3 to $5. These can't be as good as DEI/ BEI or SD, but for $ 4 for 100 songs on 2 discs, you can't go wrong??

BTW, Abhimanue too is $ 2.99.

IW sale on these dvds is very temporary... The double dvds are available from Eros for $3.99 too, and they are unlikely to remove this offer for months.

Golden Hits by Eros: 100 Songs (2 dvds) $3.99

Received my 4 DVDs from IW in less than 3 days despite border crossing.

Another surprise was, all of these EROS DVDs were on Gold media. Looks like, EROS is still using Gold media. Not a bad deal for $ 3 - $ 5.

The DVDs were:

Melody Makers (100 Songs in 2 DVDs)
Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja
Guddu
Tu Chor Main Sipahi

Only disappointment wwas, that all these are field averaged interlaced. But, this was expected. I wish, DVD makers start using direct Film to NTSC cine-tel.

Are you sure? "All that glitters are not gold!" At least not these two ( Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Tu Chor Main Sipahi ) bought directly from Eros and are on hybrids and definitely not gold! more like gold plated :D :D

I have no idea, whether there is such a thing as real Gold or real Silver media. Only co-relation is that the problematic discs that rot, are Silverish color on the recorded side as compared to Gold color for the more expensive discs.

Can't say, if it really has real Gold or real Silver polish or finish on each layer or on disc. It may very well be the case, though.

Assuming that Gold or Silver finishes on the discs is a reality, it makes sense that as Siver oxidizes quickly, Siver coated discs rot early and Gold doesn't oxidize and hence Gold coated discs last longer. Actually, it is ridiculous that a DVD gets disc rot within 2 or 3 months and sometimes it already is rotten off the shelf. All these problematic discs have all been on Silver media.

Now, coming to the media on my 4 recent EROS acquisitions:

On a scale of 0 to 10 where zero is for Silver tint and 10 for Gold tint as seen on old DEI or SD discs, this is what I found on side by side comparison:

Old DEI Gurudev = 10
Old DEI Adalat = 10
YRF (SD) K3G =10
EROS Guddu = 10 (bought last week for $ 3 or $ 4)
EROS Tu Chor Main Sipahi = 10 (bought last week for $ 3 or $ 4)
EROS Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja = 6 (bought last week for $ 3 or $ 4)
EROS Melody makers (2 discs 100 songs) (Roshan, J-Lalit) = 6 (bought last week for $ 3 or $ 4)
EROS Devdas 10 = 10 (Pd $ 20 US)
EROS Devdas Replicate or Pirate = 0 (Pd $ 6 US)
Some 2in1s = 2
Some 2in1s = 0
Some pirates = 1 to 4

Pirates and replicates cost = $ 2 to $ 6.

I still wonder, are these so called pirate or replicated discs really pirated stuff or genuine cheap copies released by the right holders??

I also wonder, whether these pirate discs or cheap discs really a bargain?? As they are on cheaper media, how long will they last??

Rana, Following the technical comments above regarding gold media, I need further advice on this matter, please....

As we buy sealed dvds, how do we know at the time of making the purchase whether the dvd is going to be gold or silver media?

Looking at my extensive collection, I can't seem to establish a pattern. Nearly all YashRaj dvds appear to be gold. Many, but not all, Eros dvds seem to have a gold tint as well. Even most WEG and BABA titles appear goldish. But with BEI, its perhaps every 2 out 3 dvds which are gold. Sky and Spark are mainly Silver, and subject to freezing problems, but even they have an occassional gold release.

With objective of minimising titles subject to dvd rot, which brand could one trust?

You already observed that the problematic discs have been on Gold media. You also have already observed, which discs are mostly on Gold or Gold-tint mrdia. I too, learnt it the hard way.

There is no way of knowing in advance, whether you'll get a disc on Gold media or Silver media. Same title, but different batch may be on different medias. Moreover, same title, looking 100% genuine, may actually be a pirate or a cheaper version.

Best way to know for Gold or Silver media is to open a package and look for yourself. Many retailers will let you do that (they do their own packaging anyway).

Watching some of these Songs DVDs,:

1) Noticed a coloured song from Baharon Ke Sapne. Did they have song or two in color in this film?? (Film was B&W)
Does the include alternate ending?? (Originally film had sad ending that was later changed to happy ending)

2) Long forgotten film Mahua song was in there too. It was in color too. Was this film in color and who were the actors?? This film has some great songs. The film failed (must have) because of No Name Stars at the time of release. The same actors must have become famous later on and the film may be more attractive now. Is MAHUA avail on DVD??

If you are talking about the song "Dono Ne Kiya Tha Pyar Magar", then the movie "Mahua" was in color released in 1969.

Star cast: Shiv Kumar, Anjana, Murad, Farah, Prem Nath, Asit Sen & Aruna Irani
Music by: Sonik Omi
