After Anant Balani's sudden and untimely demise, the question on everyone's lips is, who will step in his shoes to complete CHAMELI? At a point of time, several names were being considered.

Mahesh Manjrekar was amongst those considered, but the director is all set to begin shooting of RAKHT, so allotting priority dates to CHAMELI was ruled out.

Rumour mills also speculated that Anant Balani's erstwhile assistant Sanjay Gadhvi [director of MERE YAAR KI SHAADI HAI] had volunteered to complete the remainder. But Gadhvi denied the news outright. "I'm under a contract with Yashraj Films to start another film. Besides, I am not aware of the subject of CHAMELI," he clarified.

There was talk that Madhur Bhandarkar was also being considered. But those were mere rumours.

Putting all speculation to rest, P.N.C., the producers of CHAMELI, have confirmed Sudhir Mishra [CALCUTTA MAIL] to direct the film. The shooting will now resume from Monday, September 8.

NEW CHAMELI DIRECTOR ANNOUNCED!
Who has taken over the Kareena Kapoor flick?

Following the tragic death of director Anant Balani, the entire industry has been questioning the future of his movie Chameli, starring Kareena Kapoor and Rahul Bose. The producers of the movie had already vowed to keep its planned release date and hire a new director within days. Rumours suggested Mahesh Manjrekar was the favourite to take over the project. However his hectic schedule has meant an alternative was needed. The job has now been given to Sudhir Mishra, who recently worked with Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee in Calcutta Mail.

Balani's Portions To Be Retained In 'Chameli'

Having taken over the directorial reins of Pritish Nandy Communications' CHAMELI following director Anant Balani's untimely death, Sudhir Mishra promises that he will keep the idea and vision of the late Balani intact.

Mishra also assures that he won't re-shoot the portions that Balani had already canned. “He had shot very little. But we will let it remain as it is. I will ensure that the film matches up to his imagination and perception. I hope I am able to do justice to his story,” says Mishra.

Mishra plans to wrap CHAMELI by November. In the meantime, he is scripting two films. “One is a comedy and the other, a thriller. But it is too early to reveal more at this juncture. Let me first finish the script,” he reasons.

Well known for his penchant for detailing, Mishra has begun researching for both the films. “I make films on subjects that I am familiar with. In fact, I make films that need little research work,” he laughs.
