Lucky Star's Entertainment, makers of SURYA, are ready with their new film PINJAR, directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi. As part of its marketing strategy, the makers have come out with an album-like brochure that throws light on the essence of the film.

The stills depicted in the brochure succeed in evoking memories of the pre-partition era – so realistic they seem. Based on a novel by noted writer Amrita Pritam, the story of PINJAR is set in the backdrop of riots during the Indo – Pak partition. Atmanand and Vivek of Studio Link have designed the brochure, which is a must see!

While on PINJAR, the film should cement Urmila's rise further to the top slot, after her award-worthy performance in BHOOT. With Ramgopal Varma feeling that the actress will deliver a much more effective performance in EK HASINA THI, Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi casting Urmila in a never-seen-before role in PINJAR and Khalid Mohamed casting Urmila with an actress of the calibre of Shabana Azmi in TEHZEEB, Urmila can look forward to days of sunshine once again!

It absolutely depends, how DIRECTOR handles her role..

Hema Malini, in EK CHADAR MELI SI, and TABU in MACHIS!!

Unbelievably, GOT under the skin of their character, and not for a second, gave me feelings, that they were SOUTH INDIANS, not PUNJABI!!

Credit goes to GULZAR and RAJENDER SINGH BEDI!

Pinjar

By Taran Adarsh

If we eschew hatred, the world would be the most beautiful place to live. PINJAR is about harmony and love overpowering hate and violence.

Based on a famous novel by Amrita Pritam, PINJAR depicts riots, mayhem, human sufferings and hope.

During the partition, full-scale riots broke out in which lakhs of families were displaced overnight.

The worst hit were the women. Thousands of helpless women were raped and kidnapped as communal and political tensions let loose in the Indo-Pak border villages.

Intolerance, cruelty, kidnapping and rape of women rendered thousands of innocent lives as destitute, yet love and humanism blossomed.

While there were widespread riots, there were people who still hoped in humanism to survive and were waiting for their dreams to come true.

Character sketches –

Urmila Matondkar is Puro
A victim of circumstances during the turbulent times of partition of India. How does she overcome the wrath of hostile communities and rewrite her destiny in the milieu of changing relationship of nations, communities and individuals?

Manoj Bajpai is Rashid
An unpardonable crime is committed by him. Will he be able to redeem himself and rise above the communal hatred spread across the sub-continent?

Sanjay Suri is Ramchand
A poet at heart. Once a rich man, he is now a refugee. He has lost everything, including his family. Will he be united with his loved ones?

Sandali Sinha is Lajo
A newly-married girl, life takes a dramatic twist during the partition riots. Will her cries be heard by the unjust society? Will she be able to change her destiny?

Priyanshu Chatterjee is Trilok
An idealist, enraged by the society. A son, a brother, a husband – torn between relationships within the family. Will he be able to triumph over his internal strifes?

About the music –

PINJAR has the essence of Punjabi rustic folk music. Music director Uttam Singh is at his best, while Pakistani poetess Zehra Nigah's lyrics add to the musical richness of the film. Gulzar's lyrics also heighten the pathos and romance of the period.

PINJAR co-stars Isha Koppikar, Lillete Dubey, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Farida Jalal, Alok Nath, Seema Biswas, Sudha Shivpuri and Dina Pathak.

DWIVEDI CAGES AMRITA PRITAM'S BOOK IN A FILM

By Suhel Johar

Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the man behind the successful teleserial, 'Chanakya,' has made a period film called 'Pinjar,' based on the Partition of India. The film stars Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpai, besides Sanjay Suri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Seema Biswas, Sunil singh, Alok Nath, Kiran Kumar, Farida Jalal, Lillete Dubey and 'Tum Bin's Sandali Sinha and Priyanshu.

This is the first time Urmila and Manoj Bajpai have teamed up since 'Satya,' and if that's not interesting enough, here's more. Gulzar has done the lyrics, Uttam Singh the music, Santosh Thundiyil (of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' fame) is the cinematographer and Narendra Singh (of 'Gadar' and 'The Hero') is the sound recordist. 'Pinjar' is based on a novel of the same name, written by renowned poetess Amrita Pritam and translated into English by Khushwant Singh. Lucky Star has produced the film.

'Pinjar' is not Dwivedi's first brush with films. In 1981, he directed a Marathi film titled 'Patlin'. Then during the late 90s he did a film on the cultural legacy of Khajuraho, that took many turns before its cast was finalized with Anupam Kher, Divya Dutta, Mukesh Tiwari, Sudhanshu Pandey and Shama Sikander acting in the film. In the pipeline is a bilingual film on the life of Lord Krishna.

Coming back to 'Pinjar', it is the third Amrita Pritam novel to be filmed after 'Dharti Sagar Te Sippiyan' (1965) and 'Unah Di Kahani' (1976), which have been made into films entitled 'Kadambari' and 'Daaku' for which she composed the songs.

"Although I have based the film on the book, I have also done a bit of independent research by reading various books, including one called 'Countdown to Partition'," says Dwivedi.

"The sets of the city of Amritsar are simple, but accurate and contain detail in every shot. Designed by Munish Sappal, the sets were constructed by a team of 400 people. I bought trucks from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. I got them painted to look like the trucks of those days. Everything is written in Urdu. I even have a mithaiwala's shop which was famous in those days. Do you know that 81 per cent of people in Amritsar were Muslims, and still the city remained with India," says Dwivedi taking pride in his research.

The story of the film has partition as its backdrop; the film is about a Muslim man and a Hindu woman who meet under very strange circumstances and are forced to live together.

In Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi's 'Pinjar', meaning a cage in Punjabi, Urmila Matondkar will be seen in a completely different role. She plays Puro, a victim of circumstances arising out of the Partition of India.

What made you think of adapting Amrita Pritam's famous novel?

"I was doing another project on Partition. During the course of my research, I came across Amrita Pritam's 'Pinjar'. It moved me so much, that even though it has been translated into eight languages, I thought it would be the perfect theme for my film. The book 'Pinjar' is very popular in Punjab, and the film is bound to create ripples too."

Dwivedi says that though there have been many Partition-based films, most of them use Partition only in the backdrop. "Besides being based on a known literary work, what's special about my film is that it looks at the socio-political angle very closely."

Dwivedi had announced a lavish project of Rs 100 crore a year-and-a-half ago - a film on Lord 'Krishna'. "That will happen, but after I finish one more film after 'Pinjar'. The problem is that I need the dates of 22 stars for the film. If I could have done it with a few stars and a few newcomers, I can complete it faster. Obtaining dates is a big issue. But 'Krishna' will happen soon," concludes Dwivedi

My anticipation for this is so high it's ridiculous. The year's selection has largely been a whole lot of crap. I don't think I've seen anything better than ARMAAN this year, and even that was mediocre.

I also wonder if Urmilla will be a lock for the awards this year as she will be competing against herself (Bhoot and Pinjar). Anyways, it's about time she wins one; I can't believe Akshaye Kumar won the Best Villain award at the Filmfare Awards instead of her for PTKK.

Anyone have a release date?

Does anyone know if this book is available in English? And if so, is it available to buy on the Net?

Urmila Matondakar along with other cast of the film Pinjar, presented a bouquet to the Wing Commander of Pakistan Rangers Sher Jaman at the zero line at the Wagah border on Saturday where the film crew had come to release the music of Pinjar. Since the story of Pinjar is set during the partition of India in 1947, the makers of the film decided to release the audio at Indo-Pak border of Wagah and interact with the Pakistanis.

Urmila released the audiocassette at the Wagah border. This is the first Bollywood movie whose music was released at Indo-Pak border. Urmila also spoke an emotional dialogue from the movie during the release. Earlier in the morning the film crew paid obeisance at the Golden Temple.

Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the movie is based on a famous novel by Amrita Pritam, depicting riots, mayhem, human sufferings and hope.

Urmila: Pakistan connection

Urmila's interaction with the jawans across the border has changed many of her opinions. "Bollywood filmmakers should stop making films on anti-Pak themes," she said. "My father has been on the border and he knows how friendly the people are. In fact, our films can be used to bring about peace between the two countries. We should spread the message of love and affection. We should refrain from making films that make out Pakistan to be the villain," she said. As for Hindi films not being allowed to release in theatres there Urmila said that the government policies could be reframed allowing the common man to see Indian Hindi films. Urmila was at the Wagah border to promote Chandraprakash Dwivedi's Pinjar starring Manoj Bajpai, Isha Koppikar, Priyanshu Chatterjee.

PINJAR a NEW CHALLENGE:PREVIEW

After Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot, Pinjar offers Urmila Matondkar another challenge.

Playing the character of Puro required the actress to put in a lot of effort and research.

"I am not Punjabi, so I had to work on my mannerisms. I had to erase my persona as such. Everything -- from gestures to body language -- had to be authentic.

"Were I playing a Punjabi girl in modern times, it would not have mattered so much. But Pinjar is based in pre-Partition times, so I wanted to look authentic," she says.
