Rules will Rule your heart!!

Crossover Films production 'Rules-Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula' is story of youth, love, hope, aspirations and dreams. It will appeal to all those who have a feeling, beating heart in their chests.

The movie talks about love and the quest to go about obtaining that one love in your life. At the end of journey, you realize the truth about love; that love has no rules, no formula, it is an experience, about which Kahlil Gibran pens in his book 'The Prophet' - “And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course”

The movie starts with a medley of characters that appear totally unconnected with the main track of the movie. The director, Parvati Balagopalan so skillfully ties them up at the end, that she leaves you in no doubt that she has arrived.

The script has its flaws, but its treatment is so excellent that the movie has you totally engrossed with the popcorn left untouched till the songs come in. The movie makes you laugh and cry along with it in the second half, and makes you want to fall in love once again.

Meera Vasudevan is outstanding and natural. This is one actress who does not need the slapstick and grease paint on her face. She carries the movie on her shoulders with a display of superlative acting prowess. She plays with aplomb the role of that one girl whom you want to take home to your mother.

Milind Soman is the perfect fit for the role and carries it off with panache. Asif is above average. Tanuja handles her role with perfection.

The song Chhodo Na Muje has you tapping your feet and singing along, immersing you totally in it. Sandesh Shandilya is at his inspired best in this song.

Bipasha makes a fleeting appearance in the movie.

The producer, Nirja Shah in the footsteps of Subash Ghai, makes a cameo appearance in the movie.

While love may have no rules, has this feel good movie cracked the rules of the box office? Come tomorrow, and we shall have the answer.

Check out the Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula on IndiaFM for the latest on the movie.

***If u ask me, MUSIC IS DARN GOOD, IMHO, but will go UN-NOTICED because of being a small film..perfect blend of fusion, with very good singing and tunes.

REDIFF REVIEW:

Five rules to enjoy Rules!

Ashish Magotra | September 05, 2003 13:12 IST

When Vikram Varma (Milind Soman) confesses to Radha (Meera Vasudevan) that he loves her -- which is what she has been trying to get him to do throughout Rules: Pyar Ka Superhit Formula -- she decides she does not quite share the sentiment any more.

The viewer is surprised as is Vikram himself.

The denial is unexpected. As they say, this kahani has a twist.

Bollywood has often been accused of lacking in novelty. But every once in a while, there comes this film that convinces you a new age is about to dawn.

Don't miss!

Rules, directed by Parvati Balagopalan, is one such movie. It is filled with small, lovely moments that make you laugh, cry and share every emotion with the actors onscreen. As Rules moves unpredictably through its tales -- yes, tales -- of love, sharing with you the rules of attraction, you realise this is not just another feel-good romance.

To enjoy this movie to its fullest, you have to follow five simple rules:

Rule #1

If you do not expect too much from this film, you will come out with a high. The story of Rules is that of a simple girl, Radha, who is crazy about a supermodel, Vikram. But Vikram already has a girlfriend.

A crestfallen Radha turns to her experienced grandmother (Tanuja) for help. Which she gets, in abundance.

The movie finds its way to a predictable ending through an unpredictable route.

Rule #2

Never try the rules of this film in real life.

This, however, does not apply to the film's music. You find your feet tapping instantly to the music scored by Sandesh Shandilya (he's the guy behind the chartbusting single You are my Soniya in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham). It is a pleasant mix of tuneful pop, classical and fusion.

Rule #3

Keep an eye on Tanuja. She delivers a brilliant performance. She talks a lot, but she will make you smile. She connects with the audience without much effort. She has the most screen time and deservedly so.

Rule #4

After watching the movie, you might wonder why Milind Soman is not considered a good actor. He grows on you with his subtle, understated performance.

His last movie December 16 was average fare. This film, however, should do well in the metros.

Rule #5

Don't let the supporting cast go unnoticed. All have an important part to play. You will realise that as the movie unfolds.

Crisp editing ensures that Rules never really drags.

Meera Vasudevan does seem gawky initially, but her performance picks up as the movie progresses. For a debutante, the result is good.

At times, the amateurishness of the actors and the director does show but, on the whole, this movie is certainly worth a watch.

Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula

By Taran Adarsh

When you saunter to a theatre to watch a film with such an unusual title and a not-too-established star cast, obviously the expectations are not too great. It is this low-key expectation that takes you completely by surprise as the lights go off and the story unfurls.

RULES – PYAAR KA SUPERHIT FORMULA is a feel good entertainer with a refreshing storyline, but an ordinary screenplay, coupled with some illogical turn of events, take it downhill.

Radha [Meera Vasudevan] is an assistant to renowned fashion photographer Uday. She has a crush on a supermodel, Vikram Verma [Milind Soman], ever since she was a kid.

Vikram, after ruling the fashion circuit for quite some time, nurtured a dream to become a restauranteur and move beyond the arc lights. Maggi [Namrata Barua], Vikram's girlfriend, has other plans, to switch over to films.

One fine day, Radha's world changes dramatically. Her childhood crush is shooting for an ad film in the same studio where she works. But becomes miserable when it dawns upon her that Vikram already has a girlfriend and she has no hope of ever winning him over.

Enters Radha's grand-mother [Tanuja]. Worried about her Radha's behaviour and her extent of affection towards Vikram, she gives Radha five rules to woo the man she loves.

Radha is ecstatic, as one by one all the rules gets her closer and more closer towards Vikram till she finally wins him over. Now what?

When everything was just working fine, Radha realises that she exploited Vikram's good nature and manipulated the rules to get what she wanted. She opts out of the relationship, leaving Vikram completely bewildered.

Loosely inspired by LOVE IN SIMLA [Joy Mukherji, Sadhana], RULES – PYAAR KA SUPERHIT FORMULA has many aces up its sleeve. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, keeping you hooked.

Besides the principal characters, there is also a housewife, a corporate woman, a producer and a gay couple adding spice to the happenings. What's appreciable is that these characters gel completely with the screenplay and don't hinder the film's progress.

Debutante director Parvati Balagopalan impresses in her debut. She should not only be complimented for trying such a different theme, but also for the way she brought innovation to film-making techniques.

Special mention has to be made of the way she has introduced certain characters and subsequently weaved them in the story, without deviating from the main plot and yet all those characters are complete with no loose strings hanging.

Radha's crush, her reasons for pursuit, her initial embarrassment and her grand-mother's concern seem very close to reality.

On the flip side, the film leaves several questions unanswered… But the issue that remains on your minds is, why does Radha leave Vikram when, after all those efforts, she has finally won the man she desired all through? Even otherwise, the 'rules' are nothing much to rave or rant about.

Moreover, the graph of the film takes a dip towards the second half. It's not as exciting as one would've expected it to be.

Music [Sandesh Shandilya] is tuneful. The songs are in sync with the happenings and move the story forward. Cinematography is alright. Dialogues are quite good.

Milind Soman does his part well, expressing the right expressions at the right places. Tanuja lights up the frame whenever she appears. Meera Vasudevan has a dream role and she doesn't disappoint. She emotes the vulnerability and innocence well and is at ease both in emotional as well as light moments. Namrata Barua is just about okay.

On the whole, RULES – PYAAR KA SUPERHIT FORMULA is a feel good, decent entertainer that holds ample appeal for the youth mainly. At the box-office, its business prospects at metros and more specifically in multiplexes should prove to be the best.

Rating:- * *.

Another crossover film, at least that’s what the film’s producer would like to call it (with the production house being called Cossover Films). ´Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula´ is about a granny (Tanuja) giving expert advice to her granddaughter (Meera Vasudevan) in the form of 5 rules, on how to win the guy (Milind Soman) she loves. With music by Sandesh Shandilya who went wild with Road, mellow with Agni Varsha and composed the better half of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the movie is indeed crossover at least in terms of music.

The album starts with ‘Pyaar Ke Naam Pe’ – a song about what all things lovers do to pataofy their partners. A song which goes very much by the title of the film. And I must say that Bombay Vikings singer Neeraj never sounded so hummable before (perhaps because he never tried anything other than remixes). He does faintly sound like Kumar Sanu of earlier years in the opening Hindi lines but leaves his own mark in the rendition of the English part (something he is most comfortable at). The refreshing Hinglish lyrics come as a real surprise by newcomer Subrat Sinha.

When I heard ´Uljhano Ko De Diya´ by Sanjeevni (of Chori Chori fame from Kareeb), I couldn’t help but bless the Zee music show SaReGaMa for their first discovery (second being Shreya Ghosal). Sanjeevni in her saccharine-coated, innocence filled voice is simply mesmerizing and is ably supported by K.K. Again, Sinha comes up with meaningful lyrics about the humble questions pertaining to the love that a girl wants to ask her beloved and the answers that she expects from him. Shandilya makes good use of flute, sitar and other instruments.

‘Radha´s theme’ is an imaginative instrumental piece that instantly gave me a picture of some animated love fable with the lovers in their sublime moments. With violins dominating the track, it appears twice in the album and has an opera kinda feel to it.

Sonu Nigam whose singing had slightly taken a backseat these days, thanks to his acting assignments, returns to full form with ´Gori Tere Nain´. One of his best rendered songs in recent times since the Saathiya title track, this one is an excellent fusion of synthesizer beats and Ustad Sultan Khan´s Sarangi. Sonu strikes a perfect balance between pop and classical singing. Lyrics by another newcomer Prof. R.N. Dubey (as he would like to be called) is about eyes of a beauty that speak volumes. Club Remix version by Jatin Sharma is for those who want it fast and frothy.

´Chhodo Na Mujhe´ by Kunal Ganjawala (last heard in Mumbai Matinee) in two versions, is a feel good number and likeable for it’s simplicity.

Thankfully Rules - Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula doesn’t adheres to any conventional rules or formulas in the music department. Hope the same can be said about the movie also.

*** GIVE UR EARS TO IT, U WILL BE SURPRISED! :baaa:

Tanuja is the heroine!

S Manasvi | September 08, 2003 19:14 IST

If I say I liked the film because I had no expectations, I would be demeaning the director's sincere effort.

Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula makes you part of the story from the start. Mainly because some of the characters in the film speak to the audience at frequent intervals. A technique that failed miserably in Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, but works beautifully in this film. You will realise their role in the story as the film progresses.

Rules, the story of a girl learning tricks from her grandmother to win her dream man, may remind you of Love In Simla.

But that is where the similarity ends. No Sadhana cuts, no behenji to modern girl transformation and no cosmetic makeovers.

Just five simple rules that target a man's psyche.

This is where the screenplay steps in. Ajitabh Menon has woven a simple story into a gripping screenplay that offers Tanuja a lead role after many years.

Tanuja is the heroine of the film. As she sleepwalks through her well-written role, she makes you wish for a grandmother like her. Milind Soman is in the best role of his career as Vikram Verma. He delivers the goods with plausible ease.

Newcomer Meera Vasudevan as Radha rides her dream debut vehicle with tremendous confidence. Namrata Barua disappoints in the two good scenes she had for herself. Raj Zutshi and former anchor Mandeep shine in their supporting roles.

Why Denzel looks for excuses

US box office looks bleak

Review: So, where's the party?

Special mention should be given to Sandesh Shandilya's music score. He has given us Piya Basanti, You are my Sonia (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) and Road earlier. Here too, he gives us four wonderful songs which are coherent to the film. Strange, Pyaar ke naam par and Uljhanon ko aren't on the charts yet.

Chinmaya Khatri's minty cool cinematography shows some sparks in a few scenes. Parvati Balgopalan's direction is good. The gay monologue, Radha's confession, Vikram making fool of himself at the escalator and Dadima's encounter with Vikram at the park are some of the scenes which have been dealt with amazing maturity.

Full marks to Parvati and Nirja Shah for making such a refreshingly different film. Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula is a welcome relief from Bollywood formula films. Thanks for bending the rules. We love this changing scene of Indian cinema.
