Hrithik Roshan ke pas Papa hain - By Deepa Gahlot

There is a very funny SMS joke doing the rounds right now which goes:

Shah Rukh Khan: Mere paas dhan hai, daulat hai, bangla hai, Yash hai, Karan hai, Aditya hai, tumhare paas kya hai?

Hrithik Roshan: Mere paas baap hai.

This Deewar inspired dialogue, obviously makes fun of the fact that two of Hrithik’s biggest hits have been directed by his father Rakesh Roshan.

A few weeks back, when Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon came out, the industry and media were waiting with hammer and nails to nail shut the coffin of Hrithik’s career.

Now everybody is talking of his triumphant ‘comeback’ with Koi... Mil Gaya. There was a time when stars would take a break (or a fall) and return after a long gap to qualify for ‘comeback’ status. A strange phenomenon of this instant celebrity era is that people can come, go and return in a span of two years.

Hrithik did not stop working after his first flop, he did not become a lesser actor (despite the overacting in MPKDH); he had not asked anyone to put him on a pedestal after the success of Kaho... Na Pyaar Hai — from all accounts, his short-lived ‘deity’ status did not go to his head, he remained a polite, level-headed, nice guy, who repeatedly begged the media for restraint in all his interviews.

The mistake he did make was select a series of turkeys, which deservingly bombed — with the exception of Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham, a multi-starrer anyway and not credited to him.

His father has an explanation for the faulty selection of films. Apparently the films had been signed before the release of Kaho... Na Pyaar Hai. Fond daddy had insured Hrithik’s future—in case KNPH failed, Hrithik had films with top banners and good directors lined up. By chance, KNPH turned out to be a major hit. Hrithik’s role in all his films was changed to suit his new superstar status, as a result of which they all went a bit haywire. “People rightly asked what Hrithik was doing in a small role in Yaadein,” reasons Rakesh Roshan, “but it would have been okay if KNPH had not been such a big success. His role was extended in all the films, and somehow things went wrong. He hardly signed anything after KNPH and he is being very careful about what he does now.” All of this goes to show that success, like failure, can never be predicted, and unexpected success can be as much of a shock as unforeseen failure.

The fact remains that Hrithik is a good, hardworking actor and he didn’t deserve as much flak as he got for his flops, just as he didn’t deserve the excessive adulation for his first film. Now that he is back in the reckoning again, already rumbles of admiration for his work in Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya have started coming in — even his haircut is eliciting comments about his dedication — though the film is not even complete. Déjà vu?
