I think both Dhool and Anbe Sivam are prehaps two of the few best Indian film releases this year. Both are high masala entertainers that high quality production values with a fitting screenplay cater for those who are looking for 2 and half hours of fun!.

I wouldn't call Anbe Sivam a masala entertainer......it was definitely a good movie, but with one fight scene and 3/4 songs, I don't think it was a masala movie. Definitely worth a watch though.

I rented this today, and the picture definitely did not look like those screenshots. The detail and sharpness were often very good. I even looked at some of it in 16:9 mode and I did not see a thick layer of noise on the picture. Dark scenes are a little grainy and washed out. Some frame damage has occured to the print, which is surprising for such a recent film, but otherwise it is more than watchable. IMO this is the minimum standard that Indian DVD companies strive to meet.

The plot was standard, but the action sequences are well executed. Is wire work becoming more common in fight scenes nowadays? The earliest I can recall in an Indian film is in Mission Kashmir.

Reema Sen's character should have been written differently. Plotwise she does come in handy at one point, but her role is mostly just an excuse to show her in skimpy outfits. That may be fine for some other film, but in a film where the problem is a very real one (political corruption), it is inappropriate. I'm tired of seeing films where an accidental bump causes the heroine to fall into the hero's arms. Also, I would cut most of the songs, keeping only the first song and the last song. A movie like this needs some light scenes from time to time, but the film would have been tighter if it was not almost 3 hours long.

Dhanoa's next with Sunny again

By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 20th, 2004 - 1230 hrs IST

After the debacle of Kismat and before the release of his next film Deodhar Gandhi, director Guddu Dhanoa has signed in another film for Padmalaya. And this time again Dhanoa ropes in his favorite Sunny Deol for the main lead.

The film is a remake of AM.Ratnam's Tamil film titled Dhool starring Vikram, Jyothika and Reema Sen and directed by Dharani. The story is of a villager who fights with a minister to stop contamination of their village river. The Hindi version will be shot near Hyderabad from August. Bhumika Chawla, Amisha Patel and Sameera Reddy are being considered for two of the female leads in the film.
