Okay, so the film borrows heavily from Hollywood biggies of the genre,

Hmmm... I think we were all right abt this, from Day 1.

I can make out resemblances with :-
1.) Close Encounters of the 3rd kind (the music)

2.) E.T (as stated in the article..the scientists chasing the alien etc.)

3.) Phenomenon (meeting with the alien, transforms him into a superhuman !.. but the fact is... does he die in the end like Travolta ? I dont think so... or I may be wrong... cos I saw a still capture of the movie and it showed Rekha holding onto Hrithik... clearly indicating that they were waving goodbye to the Alien, a la E.T)

Hmmm so how come this film is different ?.. Anyone care to explain :p

Yes. It is in the language the target audience understands. Hindi/ Hindustani.

KOI MIL GAYA-FIRST TRADE REPORT
"The film is likely to have a bumper initial but after that it will only appeal to children and the gentry audience.

Not many children and even adults understand English or prefer to watch English language films. Also, Hollywood films don't have song and dance routines.

Rakesh Roshan's Confidence:

http://www.boxofficeindia.com/
BOX OFFICE LATEST-updated 7th August 12.00 IST

Suprisingly Koi Mil Gaya will be released on only 306 prints tommorow.Delhi/UP will have 45,East Punjab 28,Rajasthan 22 and Mumbai territory will have 94.Surely there must have been more demand from exhibitors considering the expectations the film has aroused. It could mean Rakesh Roshan is very confident of his product to sustain from the second week onwards as normally makers of big films go for the kill in the first week. They will probably be hoping to increase the print count in the second week.

Koi Mil Gaya

By Taran Adarsh

When you have a colossal blockbuster like KAHO NAA... PYAAR HAI behind you, the expectations from your next film, KOI... MIL GAYA, multiply manifold.

KOI... MIL GAYA is path-breaking in the sense that it depicts a story that is 'alien' as far as the Indian screen is concerned.

So, when any film-maker takes his first step towards exploring a new genre, he's bound to meet with mixed reactions. It has been proved time and again that Hollywood classics to Indianised translations either sink or swim.

KOI... MIL GAYA, directed by Rakesh Roshan, does meet the expectations, but only to an extent. You do feel something is amiss in the enterprise.

Sanjay Mehra [Rakesh Roshan] is a scientist, obsessed with establishing contacts with extraterrestrial life. He invents many innovative gadgets, instruments and finally succeeds in devising a computer that can transmit messages to space.

His foresight becomes a reality when, as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky. But before Sanjay can even enjoy his success, he and his wife Sonia [Rekha] meet with a horrific accident where Sonia survives, but Sanjay loses his life.

Sanjay's son Rohit [Hrithik Roshan] is born; he's a mentally challenged child who faces ridicule and torment at every phase of his life. His lone companion is Nisha [Preity Zinta].

One day, Rohit discovers his father's computer and calls Nisha to help him use it. Both of them are completely fascinated by the images and instructions that appear on the screen and experiment with the device, not realising the impact it would have.

The entire town witnesses a blackout and a bizarre phenomenon. In an incandescent glowing sky, a colossal spaceship is sighted. More strange findings are in store in Rohit's town. A pair of footprints not belonging to man or animal is found.

What could this mean? Is danger lurking somewhere close?

Although the wide-ranging hunch is that KOI... MIL GAYA is inspired by master storyteller Steven Spielberg's classic E.T., it is, in fact, an amalgamation of E.T. as also MAC AND ME [starring Jade Calegory], besides reminding you of the recent hit SPIDER-MAN.

If the spaceship-alien angle takes its inspiration from E.T., Hrithik's characterisation [that of a weakling who turns powerful after a spider bite, in this case the alien touching him] reminds you of SPIDER-MAN.

Nothing wrong in being inspired though, for Rakesh Roshan has Indianised the theme to suit Indian sensibilities.

Depicting the hero as mentally challenged for the major part of the film is a big risk by itself, but Roshan Jr. carries it off with aplomb. That is the mainstay of the film. But more on that later!

Besides, for the Indian audiences, who've witnessed aliens in the tele-series STARTREK and years ago in E.T., the alien in a Hindi film is a novelty. The introduction of the alien at the interval point does raise expectations of a riveting second half.

Prior to that, the first half succeeds in arresting audience attention and that's largely due to Hrithik's portrayal of a weakling. But the pace is inconsistent in this half, for it picks up, drops, loosens, gains momentum with regularity.

A few sequences in the first half impress you, but the one-sided romance, of Hrithik believing that Preity is his girlfriend and the songs that follow, take the fizz away from the film, making it look like any other routine flick.

The second half has a few well penned and well executed sequences that are bound to be an instant hit with viewers. Instances:-

The basketball match is a major highlight. It may not only find flavour with the kids but even with the mature types, who'd want the weakling to crush the arrogant, know-it-all types.

Even the dance number, 'It's Magic', is not only well choreographed, but comes at a time when the protagonist is undergoing a gradual transformation.

But, unfortunately, the climax of the film looks like a hurried job. A more convincing conclusion to the story could've been thought of, which would've enhanced the impact for sure.

Director Rakesh Roshan is in comfort zone vis-à-vis handling dramatic scenes. The emotional outburst by Rekha soon after Rajat Bedi and his friends [at the behest of Preity Zinta] have assaulted Hrithik, holds tremendous emotional appeal.

Ditto for the scene when the computer teacher insults Hrithik [second half]. Hrithik's subsequent dialogues will be greeted with applause.

Even the sequence when Hrithik is empowered and has a clear vision, as also realising that he has physically become stronger as he sees his bulging muscles, will appeal to the kids.

However, despite opting for a novel theme, Rakesh Roshan and his team of writers [Sachin Bhaumick, Honey Irani, Robin Bhatt] shouldn't have resorted to clichéd situations in the screenplay. The Rajat Bedi track, for instance, is wearisome.

Also, there was ample scope to work on the romantic track between Hrithik and Preity. Besides, the climax is that of convenience and the sequences after the alien has departed, looks stretched gratuitously.

Most important, the alien looks synthetic and wears a blank look [except his eyelids moving!], unlike the one in E.T. – something that may not appeal at all. Also, the creature should've been given more prominence in the second half. But the camera remains focussed on Hrithik and how he plans to win the love of his girlfriend [Preity Zinta]. The viewer wants to see more of the alien and less of the song-and-dance routine. Moreover, the alien mouthing Hindi and English words looks bizarre.

Rajesh Roshan comes up with a winning score yet again. The songs have a mesmerising effect and the choreography in almost all the songs is splendid. To single out, 'Idhar Chala' and 'It's Magic' are the pick of the lot.

Cinematography [Sameer Arya, Ravi K. Chandran] is first-rate. The lush green locations are a visual treat. Dialogues [Javed Siddiqui] are good at places. Action sequences [Tinu Verma] have the required punch.

Hrithik Roshan dominates the show and packs in a power-packed performance. The role of a mentally challenged person is no cakewalk, but the actor takes to it like a fish takes to water. He manages to pull off the zero to hero routine exceptionally well. As an actor, he scales dizzier heights with this splendid performance.

Preity Zinta excels in a role that doesn't really require histrionics, but does require the confidence to carry it off convincingly. Rekha is credible. Rakesh Roshan is effective in a small role.

Johny Lever does manage to raise a few laughs. Mukesh Rishi is alright Ditto for Prem Chopra and Rajat Bedi.

On the whole, KOI... MIL GAYA tackles a novel concept as far as the Indian screen is concerned. But this genre is bound to meet with mixed reactions, varying from good to just-about-fair to disappointing. At the box-office, the initial draw has been terrific, but it remains to be seen how the audiences respond to the alien. If the kids get hooked on to it, the results could be remarkable, or else the film will settle down to the fair category thanks to its exorbitant price.

Rating: * * ½.

[color=red]Another GOOD review of Koi Mil Gaya from HT. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/1153 ... 030005.htm
Excerpt:
"The role demanded that Hrithik act like a child and he does it admirably well - most of the time. Once in a while when he does keel over - he's forgiven by the audience. Rakesh Roshan relies on the age-old Mumbai mainstream formula - the willing suspension of disbelief, and it succeeds.

As for the special effects, they certainly don't like they've been put together in a rush and are clearly a cut above the rest by Bollywood standards. Not quite your Independence Day but we're getting there.

And yes, the pre-publicity in this case has been well worth it. Koi… Mil Gaya is certainly worth that one watch and then once more - the countless brand endorsements notwithstanding.

I have seen the film. It's ok, at times it's good, at other
times it copies E.T. too much or flirts with formula
nonsense. The songs are mostly very well done. Some of
the sfx are very nice. And the two scenes where the bullies
abuse Hrithik's character, especially the second, are
among the best scenes you will see this year in any Indian
film. If only the whole film were this good, what a treat
that would be.
The film will make its money back. And Hrithik will get
his share of award nominations. I think Rakesh Roshan can
relax. Target hit.

Not bad I will say since Rakesh Roshan has been in my list for being one of the worst directors. But getting a good technical crew has made a great difference. Kabir lal would have done a terrible job with the cinematography...thank god... though among the two cinematographer's (Sameer Arya & Ravi Chandran) Ravi Chandran did a better job...SFX is not that bad...and of course the movie is saved by the choregrapher's Farah Khan, Ganesh Hegde & Raju Khan....especially the rain song and the club song

p.s I think Rajesh Roshan did not do some of the songs as usual he pays someone else to do it and he gets the credit

My review of KMG

Aah to be a child again! FilmKraft's KOI...MIL GAYA is a pathbreaking film of sorts. This is one film that has been awaited for all year long. Does it work? On many levels it definetely does!

The main crux of the film and everything its based on is one character. So with all that is riding on Hrithik's back, another huge pressure as having the entire film of KMG, lie on his shoulders, one would normally collapse under the pressures. On the other viewpoint, the man who is able to stand up to pressures like this, with a career hanging in the balance, would be called by most with words like superstar, brilliant, fantastic, even legend!

Hrithik's performance in the film makes everyone forget who guys like Vivek Oberoi, Arjun Ramphal or John Abraham are. The man takes each and every performance this year and smashes it to pieces. Here is a man who is in search of his second hit, and walks away with every single allocade for the film. Forget every movie and every performance this year, if you watch one performance this year by an actor, this is the man to watch. With nothing seemingly in his path, Hrithik has truly grown with the film, and leaves other newcomers like Vivek and John Abraham searching. The changes in his character are done with a beautiful ease, and it truly shows, this man is not only talented but a brilliant performer.

Naturally, though with Hrithik taking the allocades for the film, it does need support, and the two ladies of the film, Preity Zinta and Rekha, playing Hrithik's love interest and his mum, both complement Hrithik through it all. Zinta acts well in her role and her character becomes immensely likeable as well. Rekha makes us feel for the mother who truly only wants the best for her child. The six children, who act as Hrithik's friends, act like children, thus filling their parts very well.

Song wise, "ITS MAGIC" is the chartbuster of the movie and is one of the best choreographed songs of the year. All the songs of the movie are hit songs and will definetely make the soundtrack a huge and fun listen for everyone.

Jadoo, the alien, is truly one of the cutest creations ever invisioned on hindi screen, although when he speaks it does sound like a robot is speaking.

The entertainment value for the film is very high, as there is something for almost every single viewer. However, the main theme of the film is likely to appeal to the youth crowd more than anyone at the moment. However, the best part of the film is it takes us back to when we were a child, and brings out the child in all of us.

The main attraction value for this film is truly Hrithik however. The man makes the whole industry stand up and take notice. Regardless of the box office fate of KMG, Hrithik's career is flat
on the ground, and is now the benchmark. Can the other Oberois and Abrahams make up? It would be quite hard to see that in this sense.

Overall, Koi Mil Gaya is simple...and for Hrithik and the Roshans, ITS MAGIC!

Rating: 9 out of 10

Ummm AHS... looks like you are kinda misinformed there :) But I dont blame ya for that ! ( cant expect anything more... )... :p

Just a question here guys... if a name does well in the first film..whats the guarantee it will do well in this film as well ?
Prem for Salman was repeated in so many films... Rahul for Shahrukh.. Vijay for Amitabh and now ROHIT for Hrithik ?

Without even watching the movie, one can make some guesses abt the film.... If someone has seen the film, can they confirm if the story is a cross-breed between
Phenomenon & E.T ? (The autistic child (man in Phenomenon) and Alien (direct lift from E.T ) ?

The major influence is E.T. with many concepts 'copied'. There is also "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Independence Day", and similarities to films with adult children, such as "Forrest Gump" and "Big", both with Tom Hanks. But I have not seen any performance in any film that reminds me of Hrithik (except for some of his earlier roles). He has a unique screen presence. If only Bollywood knew how to use him right, but I'm more convinced than ever that he must leave Bollywood (or at least work outside the formula corsett) to fully explore his possibilities. He is by far the best thing about KMG while the film is often not up to the standard he sets.

saw the movie on saturday at the imax........ and I just wanna add that the film is watchable due to a very commendable performance by Hrithik...... he really made u feel for his character...... the alien jadoo was a bit dissapointing but kids seemed to love it.... special effects were ok and not bad for a hindi film..... the songs were well picturised...... and last but not the least the kids who play hrithik's friends were really good........ esp that little sardar... all in all not a classic but definitely a film that is your money's worth........ and all due respects for hrithik who proves he is an actor to reckon with.....

Just saw Koi Mil Gaya. It's a cute movie overall(I had initially expected far worse to be honest). Hrithik Roshan labours well in his role, it's decidedly a better show of effort than Main Prem Ki "bullshit" Diwani Hoon (in every aspect may I add). But If I wanted to see a more consistently well written (off-beat)Bollywood kids lovey-dovy movie affair of recent times, I'd go for Vishal Bharadwaj's Makdee.

The movie is passable, considering that a subnormal man directed it [hmmm, Roshan Snr was apparently reflecting on himself:) ]. I was able to sit through it, and even enjoy it, largely because the technical aspects, especially cinematography and editing were pretty good for the film, no thanks to any of the Roshans, but to the respective technical crew. The songs were jarringly well executed in comparison to the rest of the film, because they were brilliantly directed by Ganesh Hegde and Farah Khan, two of our very best choreographers.

IMO Makdee is far more intelligent and sophisticated than this.
