Pioneer's DV-47Ai DVD player brings thunder to any home theater setup. It's also a natural fit for Pioneer's VSX-49TXi A/V receiver, the nerve center of our Digital Digs living room.

The biggest feather in the $1,200 DV-47Ai's cap is that it can output audio from all disc formats. With other players you have to switch between an optical/coaxial digital connection for movies and an analog 5.1 output for DVD-Audio or Super Audio CD (SACD). But the DV-47Ai simplifies all that with its sweet four-pin FireWire connection.

Thanks to the FireWire interface, the VSX-49TXi receiver knows when you've inserted a disc into the player. It then switches to the appropriate decoder format. We could quickly and painlessly switch between SACD, DVD-A, and CD audio.

When we went searching for a DVD player, we wanted to find one that would let us eliminate the tangle of audio connects and let a high-end audio signal remain digital until it was sent to the speakers. The FireWire link between the DV-47Ai player and the receiver does just that.

Joys of video
A Super Fine Focus digital filter offers 4:4:4 video upsampling to reduce noise while increasing the horizontal resolution to 540 lines.

A beefy 108-MHz/12-bit video DAC converts DVD video into an analog signal.

Videophiles will have a field day tweaking the 16 video parameter adjustments, including progressive scan behavior, several forms of noise reduction, and picture levels.

Out-of-the-box, factory video settings for CRT and plasma displays are a click away.

Take complete control
The comfortable remote, complete with jog-shuttle control, takes advantage of Pioneer's Trick Play Processor, which smoothes out fast-forward/reverse scanning. An integrated thumb-stick for menu control and a glow-in-the-dark keypad -- two terrific touches -- made daily use all the more effortless.

Summary: We haven't seen a more capable stand-alone DVD player than the DV-47Ai. When paired with a FireWire-ready receiver, even stereo newbies can appreciate the simplicity and power this setup offers.

Pros: Closest thing we've seen to a "universal" DVD player; FireWire connection

Aside from the reliability problems Bravo is great. I don't know what's the hold up with companies like Denon, sony, pioneer from making a DVI equipped player.
