How are you intending to 'convert' the Dolby Stereo SR matrixed surround tracks of Virasat to 5.1 DTS? Is it going to be pseudo? If so what's the point? Just earning a DTS tag on the DVD?

To do a proper job, it is going to be incredibly difficult to extract discrete stereo channels for the rear - especially considering that the rear channels in Dolby SR are not full frequency channels (they go up to 7 KHz, instead of DTS's 20KHz) It is going to sound bland and Dolby Stereo-ish no matter what is done. Unless you can get access to the original project clips in Protools or whatever and remix the entire film again - with new surround and sub-woofer channels This is probably beyond any Indian DVD company.

So, IMO it is a futile attempt to release a DTS DVD for Virasat.

The other 2 films are insignificant and inconsequential. Not to mention, too dumb to talk about.

The theatrical sound formats for these films was as follows.
Virasat was in Dolby SR only.
Bulundi (1980) was Mono only.
Bulandi (2000) was Dolby Digital only.
Koyla was DTS only (with one of the most dynamic surround sound to date).

Instead of converting the stereo mix into 5.1, they should encode it as dolby prologic. It will sound better than fake 5.1 anyway. And with prologic II you will get better surround sound.

I'm not interested in DTS sound from Indian DVDs while
the sound masters are not good enough to make a difference
between well done DD and DTS AND the picture is as mediocre
as it is. Don't think about whether you want to drive a

Well said Michel, I couldn't have put it better.

Bollywood's aesthetics need to catch up with all the technical gear they've acquired of late.

Sanjay, I'm surprised someone as intelligent and discerning as you is being an advocate for trash like Koyla. ??? Just a thought :)

That's wrong info. The first announced Dolby Digital project was Dil To Pagal Hai. It was announced in 1995 and the film released in 1997. But a slew of other films beat their release dates to it.

Viirasat was in Dolby SR. The film's voice tracks have a strange 'reverberation' all the time. Weird sound designer.

Oh ok. Don't know why I thought Virasat was DD.

The last thing we need for Indian films is a higher bitrate format to reveal the deficiencies of the original sound recording and mixing! :)

Thanks I think I smell a compliment in there. :) I am not really advocating the film Koyla but rather the excellent soundtrack of the film and it is really a fact that the film has some of the most dynamic surround sound heard in an Indian film. Also I really like the music of the film and the locales and other technical aspects including cinematography and stunts. A well mastered DTS DVD of Koyla would really be a high quality demo disc for a good audio system.
In closing let me add that in my opinion this was a much better film than given credit for and definately better than the other more successfull crap (eg. Karan Arjun) from Rakesh Roshan. Ofcourse the film had its share of trite moments (don't all Rakesh Roshan Films) and some of the comedy and dramatic (should I say over melodramatic) scenes are quite crass and cheap.
