He’s different, he’s creative, and he’s daring. Ladies and gentlemen Nagesh Kukunoor is back with the year’s best Hindi film yet. “3 Deewareinâ€, which recently premiered at the first Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, will touch you, it will humor you, it will anger you, and most of all it will entertain you all the way. A strong screenplay, brilliant performances, and sensitive direction are the three strong walls within which lies a riveting story of coincidence, friendship, and hope.
Ishaan (Naseeruddin Shah), Jaggu (Jackie Shroff), and Nagya (Nagesh Kukunoor) are three murder convicts on death row. A struggling documentary filmmaker Chandrika (Juhi Chawla) arrives at the prison to capture the lives of these three convicts. Between this day and the 26th of January, the lives of these four people will turn like they would never have imagined. Inspired by a documentary he had viewed earlier and a tinge of Shawshank, Nagesh Kukunoor takes this premise and weaves a chilling web interconnecting his characters through some brilliant writing.
As a writer, Kukunoor makes a wise choice of placing more emphasis on characters rather than plot to progress the storytelling. Paralleling the lives of his four main characters, Kukunoor develops them with so much detail and simplicity that he connects with his audience within a matter of frames. Once this connection has been made, a strong platform has been laid on which the audience can receive a thrilling dose of shock treatment by the end of the movie. Kukunoor scores because he does not underestimate the intelligence of his audience. He ensures that lines of banal dialog are not wasted in emotions that can often be conveyed through a subtle shrink of the eyebrow. Neither is there place for singing and dancing, nor is there much room for Odyssean expositions. The film begins with a sharp focus, is to the point, and remains on track throughout the journey.
Naseeruddin Shah as Ishaan – the conman brings impressive detail to a very colorful character. Watching him infuriate, hurt, or heal is nothing short of watching a master of a craft practicing it beyond the best of his abilities.
Jackie Shroff as Jaggu is a depressed soul who finds light by expressing himself through lyrical poetry, desperately awaiting his turn at the gallows. Jaggu’s pain and angst is very internal as opposed to that of Nagya. Shroff does a commendable job of piercing Jaggu’s qualities through his meditative subtlety.
Juhi Chawla as always is a pleasure to watch, only this time with a de-glamorized persona that is strikingly real. Be it as a struggling filmmaker going after the truth or the oppressed wife who stands up to her husband, Chawla is simply fantastic. While his writing and direction are highly remarkable, as an actor Kukunoor is the surprise package of the film. Be it his insecurities, his pain, his laughs, or his cries, Kukunoor communicates all of Jaggu’s qualities through his signature subtle form of humor making good use of the Hyderabadi lingo.
Directorially, Kukunoor is in fine form. His storytelling is taut, his vision articulate, and his execution captivating. The depiction of prison life is often disturbing and brutally realistic. But never does he cross the line between disturbing the audience and repelling them. His keen sense of entertainment is evident in every segment of his filmmaking. His skillful build of suspense is as entertaining and engrossing as the release of his plot twists at the end (Hush!).
While proficient on the technical front as well, “3 Deewarein’s†emotional appeal is extremely strong, giving it amazing potential to reach out to an undifferentiated audience. As always, Kukunoor reinforces that good movies are not made by gargantuan budgets and musical interludes in Switzerland, but rather by simplicity, clarity, and originality. With the arrival of “3 Deewarein,†audiences can finally stop complaining about the lack of good movies coming out of the Mumbai film industry. Anybody who says that the bank of scripts has run out should seriously consider a meeting with Mr. Kukunoor. Let’s hear it for this gutsy man who dares to be different, and does it so well!
