I have seen the DVD and I can reveal the following things.

The film was shot in 1.85:1 widescreen ratio with DTS 6 track sound. The sound on the Pyramid version is actually dolby Mono created to Dolby 5.1 with the use of pro-tools.

Ayngaran will be releasing this film in dolby 5.1 converted from the original steams created from the DTS mix.

Regarding the subtitles for the songs in Kanathil Muttamittal. It was at the request of Mani Ratnam that the songs should not be subtitled. The 35mm Print cinema version with brunt in English subtitles has also ommited the English Subtitles during the songs. The reason for his deciscion is unknown but I feel it might be to do with the strong Sri-Lankan Tamil theme and its hidden patrotism, instead of the usual India!

Some Indians might take to offense of the issue on Sri-Lankan refugess entering India. A bit like the eastern European refugees enterting the UK, which has caused a stir!

Arsh, in that "Anandam's here to join us" cap, were the trees in the background moving? They look pretty blurry. Did you notice a lot of DVNR in this DVD? One of the songs on the Pyramid songs DVD "Hits of Yesteryear" has so much DVNR on it that when the dancing girls wave their arms, their arms disappear completely!

I don't understand what's going on at Pyramid. They were a major player in Tamil music, releasing many good quality CDs and cassettes. They also released quite a few movies on VHS and have produced a few films (Sangamam and Rhythm, for example). So why are they sourcing some of their DVDs from VGP tapes? That aside, the Iruvar DVD screenshots look better than most of their efforts.

Transfer print looks good, colors look accurate, picture is soft, and is fieldaveraged interlaced, giving u blurry lost limbs!

Good that someone took my recommendation and went out and got it. I must say that the picture looks MUCH clearer and more defined when watching the film on a TV screen. I supposed that when one hits the pause button for a screenshot there is much that is lost.

Regarding the black and white portions, these come in at two intervals. One is when they're shooting a film with Mohanlal as an emperor at war. The other is during the incredible song 'Narumugaiye' with Madhubala and Mohanlal, which cuts between b/w shots of Madhubala dancing and between shots of Mohanlal and Aishwarya Rai as newlyweds.

Personally I don't think I'll get the Ayngaran version. I wanted this movie on a pan and scan version and this is what I got. It also has subs on the songs. The quality overall is excellent. I'm very happy with this purchase, even though it cost me $25 total from Shrimatis. I hardly spend that much on DVDs ever.

Websites to get the 'Iruvar' DVD from :

1. http://www.shrimatis.com
2. http://www.themahal.com

Yes, very true. Not only that, it also leads to the intended feeling of 'a film within a film' which is what Iruvar is actually all about. I wish they'd given Gauthami and Tabu more screentime though. Aish just hogs so many scenes for herself, even when her presence isn't needed. By the way, do you know if this was released before 'Aur Pyar ho gaya'? Both were in 1997 I think.

As far as I remember, Iruvar was Aishwarya Rai's first movie, and Aur Pyar Ho Gaya was her first Hindi movie.
