I wonder how does a Progressive Cine-tel transfer change int Averaged Fields crap.

Past weekend they showed Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega on TV. It was Field Averaged. The DVD by EROS-B4U is Progressive NTSC. If the same master (or the same DVD) was used for transmission, all NTSC fields should have been coming from a single film frame and not field averaged unless some one did choose averaging option??

Initially I thought it was the result of 24 fps to NTSC to PAL to NTSC sequence of transfers. But it wasn't so. In a 5 min sequence, TV broadcast speed matched the DVD speed exactly (to 1/ 24th of a sec in 5 min). Film to PAL to NTSC conversion would have resulted in a 4% speed difference which wasn't there.

Is it possible to press a button somewhere that will ruine the otherwise good Cine-tel transfer into Field Averaged mess??

I thought that on a Film to NTSC transfer, that even if the DVD isn't progressive (2 fields per film frame) that there were AT LEAST 2 fields per frame. So how exactly does field averaging occur, barring a Film to PAL to NTSC transfer?

This puzzles me as well.

Switching back and forth between NTSC and PAL may or may not be a reason. Even in a format transfer it must be possible to keep the fields in tact and just add or remove a field every 6th field. Consider EVP's Pyar Hi Pyar and a few other DVDs where every 6th field is repeated implying a PAL to NTSC transfer. No averaged fields there.

Changing to field averaging could be a result of Video tape copying?? But, I can see this field repeat sequence even in a VHS, copied from a proper NTSC cine-tel origin to a 5th generation copy using my $ 200 VHS VCR.

Field averaging has to be deliberate. It could be equipment, technique, settings, speed change etc.
Also, most of new Indian Film DVD releases are coming Field Averaged. Some DVDs even take a pride in this crap and call it "Ultimate enhanced version with smooth viewing".

Does time compression of the film affect the fields in any way?
