I was fortunate enough to see Kannathil Muthamittal on television last week and I must say that it's a good film. But comparing it to Devdas is not quite fair as both films are of distinct genres. In fact, to a western viewer, a film like Devdas would be appear 'right' as a musical because it generally conforms to the standards of a good old fashioned western musical in which melodrama is considered a natural constituent. To them, a movie dealing with a subject like terrorism - and that too, coupled with 'realist' acting, would not seem like a formula for the musical that Kannathil Muthamittal is.

Of the potential foreign language nominees, only Devdas and The Crime of Father Amaro have gotten any votes at all. (Miramax has officially pushed my beloved City of God as a 2003 movie.)

The way I feel is that more attention should be payed to the soul of the film: wot are you trying to give us? When I saw Devdas, I loved the sets and the performances, but wot exactly about the screenplay and the script? It could have been much better!

Too much money was being spent on it. Why couldn't it have been made on Rs. 25 crores? If the Bhatt's can make these films on Rs. 2.5-4.5 crores, they why was the need for the over glamourous look? I think there should be more to a film than just eye candy, because we have too many films wasting money on brainless nonsense!

Firstly, as a viewer, I don't see why you have to be so worked up over the budget of the film...how does it affect you? It's not like it cost you more to watch it than Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai... Second, if Devdas was a Hollywood production, considering that it would have been the same end product, it would have cost at the very least, 5 to 6 times as much. And as for soul - I think, like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder. In fact, come to think of it, why should a film have a soul at all? It is in some ways, a cliche - and quite subjective.

I'm saying that the film's budget does affect me, because, they can spend Rs. 16 crores on Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai going to exotic locations like Mauritius and New Zealand just to attract audiences, and they can't even concentrate on a good film. Who can actually tell me that KNPH had a great script? The reason due to it's success was Hrithik and it's music, both of which aren't that good!

To me, the soul of the film is it's presentation.

A film that is made on a healthy budget with stupid worldwide song locations that have nothing to do with the film, a wonderful script, great performances, a good pace, beautiful songs that are placed right in the film, as well as good direction and good dialouge. If one of these are missing, then the film is missing something, and that's soul.

Again, you haven't quite answered my question...what i mean is...how does a film's budget affect your enjoyment of a film? Why can't you just watch a film and forget about its budget? Who knows what the budget really is - Sanjay Leela Bhansali may even have been coerced by Bharat Shah to misquote the figures? I wouldn't take these budget quotes all that seriously in the first place. BTW, I mentioned Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai as an example of a very bad movie with a substantial budget that audiences everywhere don't seem to have a problem with. Instead, they always pick on the movies which at least try, like Dil Se and Devdas.

As for soul - it's hard to talk about it since it means different things to different people. Some people can cry watching Roshan No. 1 die in KNPH. Some people (like me) can't help but laugh. Some are indifferent. I think I saw Devdas with its 'soul'. Also, I think it should be noted that a film's 'soul' shouldn't necessarily evoke good feelings or strong sentimentality. There are other shades of emotions some people have never even felt. Have you seen Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange?

In my opinion the producers sold Devdas to the masses as a film with big budget. I don't think anybody was concerned about the story or even soul(hopefully sanjay leela B was). Since everybody knew the story and how everything's gonna turn out, the movie ended up being "how many shiny things we can stuff in each frame".

Aryan, as much as I would like to believe your information, but its quite dated. My inside sources are up to date, I gave the news as it come out. Infact, I can even tell you what 5 films will likely cover the spots for the Best Foreign Film catagory. ARGENTINA(Kamchatka), GERMANY(Nowhere in Africa), BRAZIL(City of God), CHINA (Hero), MEXICO(The Crime of Father Amaro). Devdas isn't even near the top 10 consideration list.

Bahut log sochte hain ki Mani Ratnam ka 'Kannathil Mutthamittaal' Oscars mein 'Devdas' se bhi successful ho sakta tha. Mere khyal se, ye film bhi thodi aisi-vaisi thi. That girl runs away from home so many times. Now Im waiting for someone to make a REAL film on the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan tensions. If youve seen KM you'll know that its a Good film but not a great film. IMO, Roja and Bombay were much better. Even 'Chor Chor' was better, I think.

Your foreign film list is interesting. Obviously they have been selected by an American committe that considers themselves well-travelled even though they just shifted home from Alabama to Lousiana. If such people are in charge, how could you even dream of 'Devdas' getting a nom? Behthar hoga, aap apne filmfare awards ke intezaar karo, usme devdas bahut saare awards jeetega. dekhte reh jaoge.

I didn't really like KM on first viewing, but I liked it a little more the second time. Kabir, you're right, it is a good film, not a great one. I'm hoping Mani Ratnam won't make any more films about individual stories set against the backdrop of terrorism, since he's already done it a few times now.

Kabir, you are right in so many ways...the problem is...I couldn't care less about the filmfare awards. I think no one here could...I 'd be far more interested in a Zulm Award ??? DVD Collector, if that's the case, well then...too bad for Devdas. What's bugging me is - how is it all these so-called likely nominations can be predicted? Is it a list of whichever producers/directors have had coffee with the committee?

Actually it was a good decision to sent Devdas instead of 'Kannathil Mutthamittaal'....it's not every day a Bollywood film gets invited to the Cannes film festival and India should take advantage of the hype to gain entry into the Oscars...
