I know what you mean. There's always a little picture of him on the back with his hands together in prayer. Quite funny. CDs released after his death still say "Gulshan Kumar Presents." He's quite an amazing man to be producing CDs after his death.

I hated the misleading covers on their Yaadein series. My dad once bought a CD called "Mukesh Ki Yaadein" thinking it would have the original Mukesh songs, and it had a huge picture of Mukesh on the cover, and in really tiny letters in the corner it said, "singer: Babla." :rolleyes:

To talk abt it, Sonu Nigam, Bela and many others got their lucky break via Gulshan Kumar.... so should they also be labelled as Pirates ? (just like Gulshan Kumar ? )

Does anyone have access to the Aashiqui DVD ?... I wonder how that quality is ?

On a sidenote... Which company has the dvd rights for the Visesh Films catalogue ( Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin.. would be the primary ones that I am interested in) ?

But beyond that, hoping for someone to be assassinated because of mafia connections isn't quite right.

No I would not term them as pirates, quite simply because they broke no law unlike Gulshan Kumar. By the way I am not referring to Gulshan Kumar and piracy in context to 'Version' copies as these albums by Sonu Nigam, Bela etc are known as. Version copies although wrong in my opinion are not illegal under Indian laws, therefore Gulshan Kumar only bent the laws as much as he could on regards to them. The reason I refer to Gulshan Kumar as a pirate, is that he was one. The whole foundation of T-Series was 100% piracy, believe me I have seen more than enough evidence of this with my own eyes. My association with this Industry goes way back to the early 1980's when Gulshan Kumar himself used to pack and sell his pirated audio cassettes (with the Mata ka logo and all) from his Lajpat Rai Market shop in Old Delhi. The fact of the matter is that Gulshan Kumar and T-series even after they became big and also got into the legitimate business of music, they continued to pirate products of other companies and this not only continued till Gulshan Kumar died but actually continues to this day. The most shocking part abotu thse people and company is that they also pirate their own products so as to avoid paying excise dutyies and royalties to artists and producers of music that is released thru them. I could go on and on about their misdeeds but I see no point since most people already know these facts and for the rest of them who think of Gulshan Kumar as some holy and pious man because of the relegious music and Vaishno Devi, I don't think I can say anything to change their opinion. Although I would like to add one thing in closing, Vaishno Devi and the money spent there by T-Series is nothing more than what any other company like for eg. Pepsi sponsoring a music show, after all T-Series is primarily into the business of selling relegious disco, are they not? I am wondering whether I should talk a little about Anuradha Paudwal and the Gulshan Kumar connection and how and why her husband was murdered.. never mind.

Since a couple of people have inquired about Gulshan Kumar and T-Series' involvement with piracy, I am reproducing the contents of my reply to them here for incase there are others who might want to know more about this.

Gulshan Kumar & T-Series were involved in piracy to the very last day of Gulshan Kumar's life and as a matter of fact they are very much involved in piracy even now. As for what kind of piracy he and his company were involved in, well he would take an HMV audio cassette and/or LP record and then copy them in mass numbers onto blank audio tapes and then used to sell them under the T-Series name. He had a network of distributing these tapes all accross India and infact had a better network than even companies like HMV. He also would make compilations and combinations of titles of other companies and sell them at much cheaper prices on one tape, somewhat like the 2 movie DVDs now being sold and other pirated DVDs of songs compiled from various films.. Then when he started his company Super Casette Industries he still continued to sell these pirated tapes and continues to do so till today, ofcourse it is his brother and son who are now handling things. Now that he had a legal company he started then to use a loop hole in the Indian copyright law, to re-record music of other companies by just substituting the original singers with his own panel of singers and ofcourse he also then started buying copyrights to some films legally. But he used his crooked ways even with titles he himself owned rights to. This he did so that he could avoid paying the royalties to the artistes and producers and also more importantly this way he could avoid paying excise duty and sales tax to the government. By the late 1980's he had become so powerful that most of the industry had no choice but to sell their rights to him, he used coercion thru his mafia contacts to force producers, in addition to that other companies could no longer compete with him since his pirated copies used to outsell the originals by a margin of 1 to 10. Then things got even worse when Gulshan Kumar started forcing his mistress Anuradha Paudwal on producers and music directors, basically he wanted to monopolize the entire music industry right from the artiste level to the final distribution stage. It was around 1989 that finally the Industry got so tired of him that they told him to take a hike and no one would sell him the rights anymore. The incident which finally pushed the industry towards this was when Lata Mangeshkar sang a song for the film 'Beta', Gulshan Kumar got it re-recorded with Anuradha Paudwal's voice and released the original casettes with the re-recorded versions. This was the last straw as far as the industry were concerned, specially keeping in mind the immense respect Lata Mangeshkar commands within the film industry. The producer even took Gulshan Kumar to court over the issue and finally he was forced to release the soundtrack with the Lata Mangeshkar versions. The extent of self promotion by Gulshan Kumar of himself, his brother and his mistress reached it's peak when in the original VHS release of the film Sangeet, Gulshan Kumar had Anuradha's picture super imposed onto the actual film during the songs. By the way it is commonly known that Gulshan Kumar was responsible for having Anuradha Paudwal's husband killed by the mafia, because he had started to becoma an irritant and inconvenience to both Gulshan Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal.

Gulshan Kumar has got to be the biggest example of "MOOH PE RAM AUR BAGAL MEIN CHURI" that I have ever known or heard of.

Unfortunately both these films are actually T-Series productions and they own the rights to these films. Infact I have had the unfortunate privilege of having seen the DVD of Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi released by T-Series. Regarding it's quality, let me just say it ranks easily amongst the poorest and shodiest of DVDs ever made, well what else can you expect from T-Series.

Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin was also released by Video $ound and it is also of very poor quality. Aashiqui I have in a 2in1 with Saajan and it simply sucks (Not Saajan)! It was probably taken from a T-Series DVD.

Now you mention it, I remember that the first time I went to India, Maine Pyar Kiya was the big thing over there. I bought the audio tape from a local shop in Assam, and it was released by T-series...........the songs were in the wrong order, it had a shoddy cover.....but I was only 9 so I didn't know the difference!! I had also seen loads of other tapes like this.

As for using Anuradha Paudwal - well it got boring after a while.She sang all sorts of songs that didnt suit her voice. And with regards to the whole dubbing thing - this seems to have happened a lot with T-Series. I remember the song Dil Ka Aalam from Aashiqui - I've heard two versions - one in Nitin Mukesh's voice, and another in Kumar Sanu's voice. Does anyone know which is the original one, and which one has been dubbed over?

The copyrights of 'Maine Pyar Kiya' belong to HMV and the fact that you bought a tape with the T-Series name on it clearly suggests you were gyped into buying a pirated tape.

As for the song 'Dil Ka Aalam' from 'Aashiqui', are you sure you are not mistaken about the Nitin Mukesh version. The reason why I say this, is because 'Aashiqui' was actually produced by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and Kumar Sanu was a T-Series artiste/stooge and his version is the only one that I know of and is the only version on the original CD released by T-Series

I bought the cassette before the release of the movie in India, as I was there then, and the cassette I have has the song sung by Nitin Mukesh.
