Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Mumbai

Dustin Hoffman or no, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra is determined to go ahead with his English film, The Fifth Move.

On the sets of his latest production, Munnabhai MBBS, Chopra reveals, "So far, there is no positive word from Hoffman, though he said he liked the script very much. I am also planning to offer the role to Anthony Hopkins."

Chopra recalls his meeting with Hoffman: "I had to meet him at 10 am. I was about to leave by 9.30 am, but just then, he called me. I was speechless. He told me I need not bother going to his place since it would be difficult for me to locate his house. He added he would drop in at my hotel. To my surprise, he turned up much before our meeting.

"Our Bollywood actors will give hundreds of reasons and excuses for not meeting a director after they get established. But when I met Hoffman, I learnt humility," he continued.

Chopra said he had handed the script of The Fifth Move to Hoffman's aides in Hollywood. The script then reached his manager (who, incidentally, is the actor's wife), his agent and finally reached Hoffman.

Chopra claimed he felt like someone coming from Jalpaiguri district [in West Bengal] and living in Nallasopara (a Mumbai suburb) and offering a role to top Bollywood actor. "I was like the same person from Nallasopara because I was staying in suburban Michigan before handing my script to Hoffman," he said. "I was happy to see Hoffman's enthusiastic response."

The Fifth Move is about two men playing a game of chess, in which one player is dead and the another, alive. Throughout the game, the player who is alive tries to discover the reasons behind the other player's death.

In an earlier interview, Chopra had claimed Indian audiences were not mature enough to understand The Fifth Move. He explained, "The maturity level of the average [Indian] cinemagoer is very low. It is very difficult to make them understand such subjects."

He also plans to cast Indian and Mexican actors in the film. "The Indian actors will be those who are close to me," he said, without revealing any names.

Why should we have to get actors from Crapwood to be in Hindi films? I think that they should stop trying to go big, and just find an actor that suits a role. Writing a script with Amitabh Bachchan in mind is not always a good thing!

I have an idea! Why doesn't he start writing quality films for BOLLLYWOOD leads and making them in such a way that Dustin frigging Hoffman will invite him OVER to discuss possibilities!

This is so annoying to me, especially when Chopra says, "The maturity level of the average [Indian] cinemagoer is very low. It is very difficult to make them understand such subjects."

Maybe their "maturity levels" wouldn't be so low if the only thing they ever saw at movie theaters was kindergarten dreck!

Besides, with a film like "Bend it Like Beckham" (albeit no Fellini masterwork itself) attracting all sorts of audiences, why the **** can't a film starring BW actors appeal to people outside India? Y Tu Mama Tambien has had lines around the block for it in California. People all over the world go to see good Hollywood films even though the people in it aren't of their race. Why does Chopra think a film with Indians in it is therefore inevitably restricted only to the "immature" India-bound audience? I'll tell you why: because he and his ilk do things like this, and when there's a good part in a good film with global appeal, they go to Dustin Hoffbrau!

Well apparently he's talking about Indians living in India...I think most Indians are definitely immature when they watch movies. They want songs and dance in every movie and every situations. If a film maker wants to experiment, it is quite hard...

Actually the fact is that Indians living overseas or should I say people in other countries of Indian origin prefer the same old song and dance routine, specially the shaadi celebration crap a lot more than people in India. How else do you explain every single non typical bollywood movie failing overseas whereas all the K3Gs and Mahabattein's make huge amounts of money.

Who would be capable of facing up to talents like Hoffman/Hopkins? AB? Aamir? SRK? Naseeruddin Shah?

I know most of you are probably ROFL at the thought of SRK, but I think he has oodles of talent just waiting to be brought out.
