At least there is someone brave enough to give evidence against the underworld...and it's a woman, unlike those other bollywood cowards who are all talk but no action.

Preity Zinta may get police protection

IANS[ SATURDAY, JANUARY 11, 2003 03:05:36 PM ]

MUMBAI: Police have offered to protect Bollywood actress Preity Zinta if she asks for security after she testified in court that she had received extortion demands from the underworld.

A senior Mumbai Police officer said the star of such hits as Dil Chahta Hai and Soldier would be given protection if she sought it.

Though Zinta said nothing in court that could implicate any of the accused in the case involving film financier Bharat Shah, she was the only witness who did not turn hostile.

All she admitted to was receiving threatening calls from an unknown person making an extortion demand and said she had told actor Sanjay Dutt about it.

Zinta told the court in Mumbai she received a threatening call from someone asking her to pay up Rs 5 million while she was shooting for the controversial film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.

Hers was the only testimony to back the Mumbai Police claim that the underworld called the shots in many Bollywood productions.

A number of Bollywood personalities who had earlier told the police that they had received threats from the underworld turned hostile in court, including Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rakesh Roshan, Ratan Jain, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sanjay Gupta, Harish Sughand, Ali Morani, Anees Bazme and Mohammed Morani.

Rakesh Roshan had survived an attempt on his life a few years ago.

Salman Khan even went back on his statement to the police that Nazim Rizvi, the producer of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, had coerced him into acting in the film.

Bharat Shah, who financed the film, was arrested in 2000 for allegedly maintaining links with the underworld. Telephone taps by the Mumbai Police had reportedly revealed Shah's conversations with alleged Pakistan-based mobster, Chhota Shakeel.

Shah's arrest followed that of Rizvi, a producer of C-grade films who hit big time with Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.

Police said Rizvi was involved with the underworld and benefited from those connections. After a lacklustre career spanning nearly 10 years, Rizvi entered the big league with Chori Chori Chupke Chupke starring Salman Khan, Rani Mukerjee and Preity Zinta, all big names in Bollywood.

i hope this is a case of "you can't hit a girl." i think shah rukh or salman would've had some hiding to do if they came forward; let's hope the fact that preity is a female makes her immune to bullets.

Theon my friend, what we're talking about here is the Underworld, they don't spare anybody. I think Preity will have to watch her back from now on.

It will be a great loss to the industry if anything was to happen to her.

thegame my friend, what we're talking about here is a universal moral that simply cannot be broken (unless you're a wife batterer of course... )

i say why don't we sacrifice salman khan and abhishek bachchan by letting THEM do the testifying. then, we can get rid of the gangsters we don't want behind the cameras, and the bad actors in front of the cameras.

She had a good career, albeit a short one.

See I think Bludhound agrees with me as well.

Theon at the end of the day, your talking about the Underworld. I agree with you, you should not hit a lady. The underworld don't care. If they feel that somebody is a threat they will bump him or her off. Remember what they did to Rakesh Roshan.

This isn't the first time she's come forward publicly about being threatened. A couple of years back, 60 Minutes (or 20/20? can't remember), a news program in the States, interviewed both Priety and Hrithik in the aftermath of his father's shooting. I can't recall her exact words, but she said something to the effect that she'd received phone calls before, and she greatly resented it - in pretty strong language. I was surprised and impressed by her chutzpah, though at the time I assumed she felt safe saying it because the program wasn't watched in India. Guess I was wrong: she's all-around a gutsy lass.

She's all guts and no brains if you ask me, if she thinks she can stand up to the underworld time and time again, and have no repercussions, then she is wrong.

She could be in big trouble soon.

I think Divya Bharti was a woman who was bumped off by the underworld. The underworld don't care who they kill, they'd kill anyone and not think twice about it.

SRK has also mentioned on BBC TV that he was threatened to make films for the underworld...I think Baadshah was one of them. Thank God it was a flop!

No Mr K.

Divya Bharti was drunk and on went out for a walk on her balcony. She climbed up on to the railing or something whilst she was drunk, flashed her tits at the crowd, started fingering herself, and gave out a huge moan when she had an orgy. As a result of this orgy she apparantly lost her balance and fell to her death.

How do I know?

Let's say a little bridy told me.

That may be the 'accepted story' but here are still loads of theorys that she was killed by the underworld cos she knew too much. Or her hubby had a hand in it!

I'm sure that's what a lot of people said about Gandhiji when he stood up to the British.

If somebody doesn't start doing it, no one will, and nothing will ever change.
