im just watching Mughal-E-Azam and i seriously think AB wud do an excellent job as Shahenshah Akbar and the role of Salim wud be done excellently by Aamir Khaan, SRK wont be able to pull it off without over acting (One scene in particular where Salim approaches his mother to get his Anarkali out of prison - SRK wud ruin that scene) Anarkli would actually have to be someone whos graceful but Naazuk... Madhuri looks too old... I reckon the girl from Lagaan.. cant remember her name at this moment but will do excellent

I really hope that no one in there right mind dares to remake such an amazing film like Mughal-E-Azam. And in my opinion, as good as some of today's performers are, they would all be a miscast in a remake of Mughal-E-Azam.

I would rather prefer, somebody with his sound mind!!try to come out with an AUTHENTIC/REPRESENTABLE/PROG/REMASTERED FROM ORIG NEGATIVE..dvd of this great epic! rather than humiliating its honour, by ruining its charisma!!

Same for Pakeezah!! lol, think of Karisma Kapoor doing Meena Kumari in remake or Aish!!Madhuri is ,I think, out of question in this point!!

Restored theatrical re-releases of classic American films happen all the time. This should be done with classic Hindi films as well in India. I would much rather see a restored print of the original on the big screen than some poor remake.

I'm also currently watching this film (about 2/3 through) on the Shemaroo DVD.

I would say that for somthing like (guess) +/- US$20,000, the dirt and white flecks could be removed digitally, since the frames before and after don't have them and the software can thus tell what is the dirt. The software could also do a little tweaking of contrast and sharpness perhaps.

Beyond that would require original elements, which are undoubtedly lost for a non-Hollywood of over 40 years in age.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find English lyrics for the songs of Mughal-E-Azam? In most films, you can tell pretty much what the songs are about even when there is no song subtitles, but in the case of the (color) song "Pyaar kiya to Darnaa kyaa", I can surmise what she is saying in the song, but it would be a lot better to know the actual lyrics...

What did you mean by "Original Elements"??

The film elements definitely exist. Shemaroo DVD is Pseudo-progressive and seems to be direct Film to NTSC transfer.

I wouldn't know if that is state of the art equipment, but it sure sounds impressive. If it is excellent equipment, they obviously do not know how to use it!

Would you recommend buying Shemaroo's MEA? How does it compare to Shemaroo's Pakeezah disc, for example?

Guys.. before they even think abt remaking this film for a western audience, they should do a proper transliteration

Tawaif (as Madhuri Dixit in Devdas) was literally dubbed as a Prostitute ! :oh: which really makes her a "randi"... which is quite wrong

Again The title.. The courtesan of Akbar would be an inappropriate title.. Anarkali was never a courtesan of Akbar (if you know what I mean :D )

MEA DVD is much better than Paakeeza DVD.

MEA that I have, I picked it up for $12.50 (Cdn) last year. I don’t think it is Indian Shemaroo. Most likely, its ripped copy of Indian disc. The video is pseudo-prog, every 5th frame is a repeated frame. Zulm review mentioned pic breakdown in motion; I didn’t notice it in actions but did notice blurred frames when the camera pans very fast. I found PQ to be very good. I wonder if I got the same copy that got reviewed on zulm?? That’s typical of Indian DVD scene. You are never sure what you are getting.

Audio is 5 Ch mono??
Audio through TV speakers: A couple of times when the actor was not in the view, voice seemed to be coming from outside of the screen. A few yrs back I read an audio article which stated that its possible (but difficult technically) to get surround effect from a mono recording and mono speaker.

I’m happy with my DVD. Of course, as you know, a better version is expected as MEA has been picked up by BFI for restoration.

BTW, when playing the DVD today, it did skip once about mid way. I had to use backward search from the next chapter to get back to the skipped point. Did miss 1 or 2 min there.

the equipment listed on the shemaroo site is indeed state-of-the-art. hollywood studios use the Spirit Datacine to scan the film in a digital format, as well as the DaVinci 2k for color-correction.
now, do they know how to USE what they've got?
