Hollywood= Birth of a Nation. This movie is so controversial that it is still banned in some states.

Hollywood = Straw Dogs, Natural Born Killars, Last Temtation of Christ, Dogma, Fight Club etc...

Indian cinema =

Shekar's Kapur Bandit Queen
some strong rape and violent scenes

Kasturi Raja's Thullumo Ellai
Art-house teen film with sex scenes and drug taking

Kamal Hassan's Hey Ram
Alternative view on the partition period and Gandhism

Mani Ratnam's War Trilogy
Roja - Bombay - Kanathil Muttamittal

A collection of films looking at the conflict surrounding Indians; north = Kashmir, middle = Hindu's/Muslim's & south = Tamil/Singahleese.

J.P. Dutta's Border
A bias war film on the India-Pakistani conflict

Bala's Naandha
Contains a graphic scene of a rapist being castrated by the main chracter - this scene was cut for the oversees print to ensure a lower certification of PG-13, 15 instead of an NC-17, 18 or in some countries X

Deepa Metha's Fire
I think we all know why to this film :)

Mani Ratnam's Iruvar
A darker look at the Tamilian demi god status actor MGR, and his lifestyle.

There are a whole load of others but I don't have time to list them :)

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham - never have I ever seen such a split among movie watchers, with the insane half swearing the film is good while sane half saying its a crap movie. Of course I have no bias on this :bash:

Ali

I thought Dil Se/Uyire was part of his war trilogy, seeing as it had some reference to the problems in the North East (some of the film was shot in my home state of Assam).

A few that come to mind :

1. Aparna Sen's PAROMA starring Raakhee. This was an excellent film that no one discusses.

2. 36 CHOWRINGHEE LANE starring Jennifer Kendall (Shashi Kapoor's wife) - This film was heavily criticized by the Anglo Indian masses.

3. Mani Ratnam's IRUVAR : Very controversial Tamil film that was shut down by political forces in Tamilnadu. The only Mani Ratnam film that has not been granted television rights in South India and tracking down a copy is very difficult. Excellent histrionics from Mohanlal and Aishwarya Rai.

4. FIRE by Deepa Mehta : People wanted to burn down the theatres where this was shown. Personally I think its a very chauvinistic film and unneccessarily pro-feminist, without making an argument for it.

5. Aparna Sen's SATI starring Shabana Azmi. This 1991 film is not well known but has the lead character marrying a tree to disprove the fortune tellers who tells her she is destined to be a widow! Has anyone here seen it?

As for Mani Ratnam's movies, there is the general feeling that 'Roja', 'Bombay' and 'Dil Se' are the 'Terrorism Trilogy' - all films have clear political good and evil themes and deal heavily with religious differences and opposition. 'Kannathil Mutthamittaal' would also fall into this category by the looks of it, and if you're willing to stretch the definition, so would 'Iruvar', which is even more violent than 'Bombay', only it isn't expressed in terms of images. But clearly, 'Roja', 'Bombay' and 'Dil Se' are in a bracket of their own and hence should be considered the definitive Mani Ratnam trilogy. Also, they are the only Mani Ratnam movies where ALL three have been translated into Hindi and had Northern releases (except 'Dil Se' which was made in Hindi to begin with).

Hmmm I wonder why or when did True Lies become a controversial film ?... If that is the theme that makes a film controversial then you have The Siege (Denzel washington and Bruce Willis) that would make a film controversial....

I know of one more film... Mississipi Burning..( Lex Luthor & Jesus Christ in the film :D )..... would definately make the film controversial !

Raj Kapoor's Satyam Shivam Sundaram
Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili

song from Subhash Ghai's Khal-Nayak - choli ke peeche..

I know for a fact that True Lies created a stir amongst the Arabic Muslim community in Hollywood when the film released. They had even protested outside cinema halls & even Arnold Schwarzenegger's house to voice the propaganda in the film. At the time of its release, I even remember Arnold giving an interview on CNN claiming that he has nothing to do with what the film promoted, which is ironic to me because he still made the film knowing what its subject was.

'True Lies' was such a fun ride. It had our own Art Malik as the 'terrorist'. But I can't remember it being controversial.

There are three types of 'controversial movies'. First you have movies that take on political issues, Second - movies that take on religious issues (these usually dissolve into Category One eventually), Third - movies that take on sexual issues. A remote fourth category would be movies that take on issues pertaining to special categories of people - such as 'Bawandar' for downtrodden Rajasthani women, etc. But more or less, there are three categories.

By the way, I dont think Raj Kapoors movies were controversial in the traditional sense. I think that all they did was to get people talking and not more than that. As for 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili' being controversial, the only thing its controversial for is the breast-baring scene, and even that wasnt anything so talk-worthy.
