This, if done right could be India's next oscar entry even it's first winner! US loves historical films on personalities like this. Manisha is a good choice, however she doesn't look in the slightest like Indira Gandhi. This film is bound to be controversial and may even strike up a few protests!

OK for those of you that didn't know - some facts:

Indira Gandhi is the daughter of J.Nehru NOT the daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, she is in no way related to M.K Gandhi. They just adopted the 'Gandhi' name out of respect (I think) or it could be due to her husband (Feroz Gandhi). Indira Gandhi was shot by her Sikh bodyguards because she gave orders to storm the Golden Temple in order to get Bhindranwale - a khalistani terrorist who had taken refuge there.

Rajiv Gandhi is the son of Feroz Gandhi and Indira Gandhi. He was killed by a suicide attack (a bomb) by Tamil rebels.
Sonia Gandhi is the current leader of the Congress party and is of Italian extraction and is the Widow of Rajiv Gandhi.

M.K Gandhi was shot by Nathuram Godse who was angry at him for agreeing to the partition of India, which resulted in millions killed. Surprisingly Godse was once a follower of Gandhi, before he got pissed off with him.

The killer of Gandhiji wrote a whole statement on why he killed him. It's a very interesting read; you should check it out.

Most of it that I remember is corruption of religion and language (His attempts at making Hindustani sticks out). Wasn't it Gandhiji who actually changed some old Hindu pujas to include Allah in them (to promote religious unity)? And yet the Muslims of that time wouldn't agree to calling him Mahatma because they believed that only a Muslim could be considered a Mahatma.

I'd like to read the statement why he killed him. I think I've heard some of it before - a few months back in UK, there was a documentary about how the bhagavad gita has inspired and influenced many people throughout the ages and they stated that both Gandhi & Godse were influenced by it. Gandhi used it to fight for independence, while Godse claims it inspired him to put Gandhi away.

I can't remember him saying anything about corruption of religion, but he said something of Gandhi breaking up their motherland and words like "the continued provocation of the last 30+ years, culminating in his last pro-muslim fast, brought me to the conclusion that Gandhi should be put to an end." Then he brought in religion saying something like "Krishna advised Arjun to destroy unrighteousness & that's what I've done".

As for Gandhi changing Hindu pujas, it was a bhajan -"Raghupati Raghav" where he changed some words to "Ishwar-Allah tera naam" 9featured in KKHH). I've seen at some congregations people don't sing that part or say the original words.

Yep, though most muslims didn't see him as a mahatma I think some secular muslims did like Maulana Abul Kalam did.
