Urmila: 'Shabanaji will chew me up'
The actress to play Azmi's daughter in Khalid Mohamed's Tahzeeb

Subhash K Jha

Ten years after they worked together as mother and daughter in Shekhar Kapur's historic Masoom, the actress duo of Shabana Azmi and Urmila Matondkar are all set to reprise their respect roles in critic cum filmmaker Khalid Mohamed's new film.

Titled Tahzeeb, the film is a dramatic mother-daughter tale reminiscent of Swedish maestro Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata. Shabana plays the role that immortalised Ingrid Bergman. Urmila will play Azmi's daughter (the role was essayed by Liv Ullman in Bergman’s film).

According to the director, "The screenplay is inspired by the case studies of a psychoanalyst friend who has also assisted me with the script."

For Urmila, this film comes at a very crucial juncture in her career when, according to her mentor and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, Urmila's performance in his latest film, Bhoot "is the finest any actor has given in any of my films." He continues, "In my opinion, Urmila has evolved into a powerhouse actress, one of the best we have. In 2003, she will really come into her own. Not just in Bhoot she is also simply stunning in Ek Haseena Thi (produced by Varma) , and Chandraprakash Dwivedi's Pinjar where she is totally transformed."

A cautious Urmila says, "It is too early to talk about my film with Khalid. Yes I am doing it. I am biting my nails about facing Shabanaji. She will chew me up."

She also adds, "I have acted with Shabanaji as a child in Masoom and Bhavna. I wasn’t her daughter in the latter."

Incidentally, Matondkar was supposed to do Mohamed's Fiza which went to Karisma Kapoor eventually.

Mohamed had completed shooting his second film Taarikh with Raveena Tandon in the lead. Unfortunately, it has been shelved.

I think there is something missing out here ... i thought Masoom was made in 1983-84, So that would put it 18-19 years ago ... ?

Masoom was most certainly released around March 1983.

That role did not immortalize Bergman.
That happened 40 years earlier with "Casablanca"!

KHALID'S TEHZEEB WITH SHABANA, URMILA & DIYA

shifted from criticism to making films. From the job of a film journalist, he entered film production long ago. His third film is 'Tehzeeb' It is based on yet another relationship film with three women taking center stage, starring Shabana Azmi, Urmila Matondkar and Diya Mirza.

Khalid Mohammad says, "It is a woman centric film with a very strong role for the male. The film is about trust, forgiveness and it is essentially about relationships." Khalid penned down the Bachchan family memoirs on Amitabh and then on the noted painter, MF Hussain. "As a director, I would like to make films which have a style, my style, which are modern and yet not too hip. They are neither arty nor boring. I want to tell a story which is worth telling. I love popular cinema, I want to put all those ingredients. I want my film to be me," said Khalid Mohammad.

Khalid's efforts will finally bear fruit when he starts shooting for his film next January. This time round, Khalid will be aiming to woo the critics as well as the masses following the shift in his profession.
