In the event, all that Kaante does is prick the balloon of hope that we cling to each time a big budget film rolls out of the starting gate.

I think this line should summarize the whole film ! So much for this film being a box office hit :D

prem panicker is another prick pretending to be a reviewer....i dunno how can people call themselves that when they give away plot points which may make audiences lose interest in a film...he had done something similar when he had reviewed FIZA and heard a earful from me...i wish he stuck to his cricketing blah blah !!!!

I am surprised you guys have still not figured out how to look at or read reviews by Indian critics. What you should do is maybe read the first few lines, then skip the main portion of the review (actually a description of the script itself, if the film had one in the first place) and read the last paragraph.
Having said that I would like to add that there is absolutely not one movie critic/reviewer in India who is actually qualified to be reviewing films.

No I have not seen it yet. Actually my great respect for it's director leaves me less than enthused to rush to the theater. :baaa: I think I might wait and get the reports from others first. Also Saathiya and 'Die Another Day' are opening here along with Kaante, and I'd much rather go see those first.

btw something really really true from HT:

If it is only marginally better than all those technically polished, glitzy action films that have been flooding movie halls of late, it's headed for commercial catastrophe.

MOVIE REVIEW | 'KAANTE'
Shot in Los Angeles, but Bombay All the Way
By DAVE KEHR

delirious Bollywood reimagining of "Reservoir Dogs," complete with musical numbers, Sanjay Gupta's "Kaante" shifts as fluidly between cinematic idioms as it does between Hindi and English. Shot in Los Angeles with a largely American technical crew, Mr. Gupta's film, which opens today in the New York metropolitan area and Toronto, offers the fulsome sentimentality of Indian melodrama at one moment and the bloody, absurdly overscale violence of a Hollywood action film at the next.

No points for originality will be awarded to Mr. Gupta's screenplay about six Indian hoodlums who band together to rob the downtown bank favored by the members of the Los Angeles Police Department. (The theory is that the bank will have light security, given the terrifying reputation of its depositors.)

The six men range in type from the natty, dignified Major (Amitabh Bachchan), a disgraced military veteran who participates in the robbery to raise the money to return his dying wife to India, to the screamingly psychotic yet oddly lovable Baali (Mahesh Manjrekar), a drug-addled killer with bleached blond hair and a bad stutter, whose motive is a retarded sister who needs looking after.

Strangely like their predecessors in "Reservoir Dogs," the six men spend much of their time sitting around restaurant tables engaged in intense discussions about nothing in particular. They also enjoy putting on sunglasses and dark suits and walking shoulder to shoulder toward the camera in rapturous slow motion.

Unlike "Reservoir Dogs," "Kaante" actually depicts the robbery, a messy affair in which the Dhogs, armed with automatic weapons hijacked from an evil Pakistani arms dealer, take on what appears to be the full, ferocious force of the L.A.P.D. But soon we return to familiar territory as the surviving gang members rendezvous at their warehouse hideout, there to settle the critical question of who among them is actually an undercover police officer.

Following Bollywood's tradition of excessive generosity, Mr. Gupta tosses in too much of just about everything, resulting in a two-and-a-half-hour film that may exhaust some viewers. There are a couple of extended, snazzily edited music videos, set in what is apparently Los Angeles' most fabulous Hindi strip joint, as well as an amazing sequence in which the men, chugging down Johnny Walker Black on the night before the robbery, sing out their dreams and aspirations. Scenes like this make you realize that Bollywood is essentially a nonnarrative art form, in which coherent storytelling plays a distinctly secondary role to the purple pleasures of the moment.

KAANTE

Directed by Sanjay Gupta; written (in English and Hindi, with English subtitles) by Anurag Kashyap; music by Viju Sha; produced by Mr. Gupta and Raju Sharad Patel; released by Media Partners. In Manhattan at the Loews State Theater, 1540 Broadway, at 45th Street Running time: 150 minutes. This film is not rated.

WITH: Amitabh Bachchan (Yashvardhan Rampal a k a Major), Sanjay Dutt (Jay Rehan a k a Ajju), Sunil Shetty (Marc Isaak a k a the Bouncer), Kumar Gaurav (Anand Mathur a k a Andy), Mahesh Manjrekar (Raj Yadav a k a Baali) and Lucky Ali (Maqbool Haider a k a Mak).

adarsh's behaviour is kind of questionable...the way he has been saying so positive things about kaante, its very "odd" - i mean he has been hyping it to the max - was he paid?

Rating: * * * 1/2

Director Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante, this year’s most-awaited film has finally released. And no, it’s not a let-down despite the fact that it is inspired by the Hollywood hit, Reservoir Dogs. In fact, the film is a path breaker of sorts in many ways. A film far ahead of its time in terms of execution, Kaante is a visual delight. And combined with good performances and superb action, it’s a must-see this season.

The film shot entirely in the U.S and starring six actors involved in a bank robbery had Hollywood technicians working on it and it shows. The stunts are mind blowing and every aspect of the film is exceptional. The story has six strangers coming together for a mission- to rob a bank. But what they don’t know is that one of them is a cop in disguise. They have to trust each other but under that is a web of deceit.

The film’s treatment is novel so is the editing, which is very international. Even though the script could have been tighter (especially the bank robbery), Gupta has managed to keep the pace going. There are some genuinely funny moments between Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Manjrekar. The first half is lighter than the second because of the comic scenes and superb dialogues, but overall the film manages to sustain the viewer’s interest level.

Major (Amitabh), Ajju (Sanjay Dutt), Marc Isaak (Suniel Shetty), Andy (Kumar Gaurav), Baali (Mahesh Manjrekar) and Mak (Lucky Ali) plan to pull off one gigantic heist, make money and live the rest of the lives in luxury. Their target -- the Service Bank in LA, which is less well guarded than others. How they go about their plan and what finally happens to their ambitious plan makes up the climax of this film.

Technically, Kaante is one of Bollywood’s brightest movies ever made. Neisha Folkes' choreography, especially the pole number with Malaika Arora and Isha Koppikar’s item song are well shot. The film’s music by Anand Raaj Anand is another winner. The only things which could have been better are the script and screenplay, written by Sanjay Gupta and Yash-Vinay.

But nevertheless, the climax when the identity of the undercover cop is revealed is shocking and surprising. For the first time in his career, Gupta has managed to balance technique and content equally. Also, he’s managed to get brilliant performances from his cast- especially Mahesh Manjrekar who is the best of the low. His characterization with its crudeness and stammering dialogues is a winner. After him comes Sanjay Dutt who is very effective as a bank robber. Amitabh Bachchan is as always sincere and delivers the goods well. For a change Sunil Shetty has given a wonderful performance. The other two actors, Kumar Gaurav and Lucky Ali don’t have as much footage and lines but they make an impact too. The only bad actor is Malaika Arora Khan who needs to stick to dancing.

Overall, Kaante should do exceptionally well all over because of its novel content and technique. The film has great production values, melodious music, wonderful performances and most of all, it is very unlike the regular trash meted out by makers these days. It’s a wholesome entertainer and seeing the historic start the film has taken, Bollywood’s doom days are finally over. See it for a refreshing feeling, to know that at last Hindi films have come of age. This Kaante has no thorns!

---MORE AND MORE, ITS BECOMING OBV THAT NO ONE IS ACTUALLY REVIEWING THE MOVIE! THEY ARE SIMPLY GIVING MARKS FOR THE FACT THAT THEY *HOPE* IT WILL BE A BIG HIT .... that's pretty sad...

komal dismisses kaante...

btw. seems again like ADARSH VS NAHTA! previous winner was NAHTA for devdas...now lets see who wins!

However, its faulty script and uninteresting drama will not allow it to sustain at the box-office.
