R D lives on in Dil Vil Pyar Vyar
Music is the soul of Anant Mahadevan's debut directorial movie

****CRUISE on ur OWN RISK, If U think, of a SPOILER!?

Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is debutant director Anant Mahadevan's tribute to R D Burman's music. And frankly, in an age where every upstart is trying to pass himself off as a 'composer' by remixing Panchamda's invaluable melodies and mauling them in the process, here is an effort that does R D's legacy proud.

The sincerity of the endeavour is there to be seen. This is not just another wannabe trying to cash in on another man's success. It is the work of a man who has put a great deal of thought in using 14 of the legendary music director's best compositions and weaving them into his story.

The story is all heart; the music is its soul. Krish (R Madhavan) and Raksha (Namrata Shirodkar) are husband and wife and strugglers looking for their first break as club singers. Raksha is picked up by a music company, becomes a star overnight, and Krish is thrilled at her success. Before long, in a replay of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Abhimaan, his own failure overwhelms her triumph and Krish finds it difficult to come to terms with it. The once happy couple starts drifting apart.

The beauty of the story lies in its telling. It is the manner in which the filmmaker has infused these ordinary stories with passion and poignancy that sets Dil Vil Pyar Vyar apart from every other Hindi movie. The complexity of Krish and Raksha's relationship is treated with unusual tenderness. Equally heart-warming is Hrithik's wooing of Jojo and their playful romance. The other two couples are a few shades paler, largely because their characters haven’t been worked on as meticulously.

Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is sprinkled with several stirring moments. The dialogues exude the honesty of everyday life and ensure that the characters on screen connect with their audience.

Perhaps the weakest links in this innovative effort are the performances. Bhavna Pani and Rakesh Bapat are totally insipid and should definitely stop trying to act. Sanjay Suri looks good. Obviously, that is not good enough. Sonali Kulkarni tries so desperately to look good that she forgets her natural talent for acting. Hence she neither looks good nor performs with conviction.

Hrishita Bhatt is okay and Jimmy Shergill is a lot better than okay. He executes the rich playboy part with flair.

Madhavan has the most difficult role in the film and sometimes seems weighed down by it, going over-the-top in a few scenes.

Namrata Shirodkar being the most experienced member of the cast comes up with the best performance. She also carries herself with dignity, unlike the other heroines. Perhaps this film will pave the way for better roles coming her way.

The real star of the show, however, is R D Burman's music, 'recreated' by Bablu Chakraborty (isn't he the same man who was R D's assistant for several years?). Most of the songs used in the film are over 30 years old, yet their beauty defies the vagaries of time.

One cannot quite imagine any Jimmy Shergill trying to duplicate Shammi Kapoor's wild frenzy in O haseena zulfonwali nor is it easy to digest Alka Yagnik's rendition of Lata Mangeshkar's melancholic Tere bina zindagi se or even Hariharan getting over enthusiastic with Kishore Kumar's Tum bin jaaon kahan.

But for a generation that has heard nothing except cheap imitations, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is a pleasant introduction to the brilliance of R D Burman.

A word of caution here (because Hindi cinema has an irritating knack for producing me-toos): while Mahadevan has come up trumps with his novel idea of making a retro musical, he might have set a terrible precedent. Just like Bally Sagoo remixed Chura liya and opened the floodgates for three million R D Burman clones, there is a danger that this film might prompt filmmakers and music directors to start pilfering old hits at random.

Hopefully, good sense will prevail and Dil Vil Pyar Vyar remains a one-of-its-kind flick. Meanwhile, do check it out.

I am WAITING for: :baaa: DIL VIL PYAR VIYAR!

"AFTER EROS ke moun maen kHAK"

So we have four pairs of young people facing problems in love. All the strands are stitched together expertly to make for a gripping climax.

Without doubt, the film is beautifully scripted and smartly conceived. Sujit Sen has come out with a pacy screenplay and helping his cause is dialogue writer Sunjiv Puri. But the overall credit goes to director Mahadevan for putting the package together intelligently. The end result is a bubbly film, full of energy. The director deserves kudos for handling such a large cast with aplomb. Even established directors sometimes fail to present a multi-star film in balanced way but Mahadevan takes good care to ensure that no character overshadows the others.

The songs (recreated by Bablu Chakraborty) are well picturised and shot differently from the original films. Anant seems to have been a tough taskmaster for choreographer Longines Fernandes, but he comes out with flying colors.

Technically too, the film is above average. Raj Kumar K's camerawork needs special mention as also the sets created by Gayatri Marwah. The editing is crisp and the background score matches the mood.

The film, with its low budget, looks set to be a winner for its distributors.

I'm surprised that no-one has said anything about this movie - Arsh bhai, where are the screenshots?????

Anyways, I just saw this movie on a VHS copy of a pirated Spark DVD (pan and scan shit), and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. OK, the film is nothing great, but it is an entertaining movie with some fantastic songs (although there are a few too many of them). I think the main good point about it is that because there are three lead pairs, there isn't enough time to focus on one of them - so none of them get boring. If your sick of over the top melodramatic crap like Devdas and Shakti, then try this - you might just enjoy it.

SORRY!! Bhaskar!! I asked ali, if he would like screen caps! but he had his own dvd available, so we decided to PROCEED with DEEWANGEE for you GUYS!!

But!! Any ways!! I did watch the film..THE HIGHLIGHT of the film is R D BARMAN"s music!! used and picturized very well in the film!and DVD has GOOD SOUND TRACK, but again average picture, I think, DEEWABGEE had a bit better picture!!

Film does not have a COHERENT, PLAUSABLE plot of how 4 couples got KNIT together!!
But anyways!! Leave ur JUDGEMENT aside!! Film is LIGHT, kinda cute! goes EASY on you!!

Mahdavan..has lost a lot of weight..looks NICE!

Namrata is the only lady having some role!!

Rest r just there!!

Watch it!! I dont think you will be PULLING your EARS! at the ENDS!! My Kids loved it because of TOO MANY SONGS and just a LOVE STORY..no VOILENCE for a change!!

But then DEEWANGEE..counteracted it! CHEERS!

**** ali please? SHOW TIME! here!! in this link!

BTW! if u GUYS want LAME AFFAIR called PYAASA!! I could be able to send screen caps of that one!!
specially I heard BHASKAR getting PYAASA/YKHRH combo from pakwebstore!! :baaa:

Not any more :p

Cancelled my order - can't afford any more shit films!! Saw DVPV and Deewangee on VHS!!!

I agree about the four love stories not really fitting together......but I liked the film cos it wasn't too melodramatic, had some fantastic music, and didn't drag (eg the whole thing with Sanjay Suri and his wife could have carried on forever with lovey dovey scenes - but it didn't)

YES!! I said the same thing!!

DVPV flows EASY on you..LENGTH . PACE too..MUSIC is SUPERB! and SONG PICTURIZATION..very GOOD too!!

I hated SANJAY SURI's EX girl friend's part!! Man!! that GIRL in FLASH BACKS was TOO UGLY! to my TASTE!!

TAlented!! Sonali KULKARNI is wasted!

The part of SONALI's BROTHER start walking is JUST , not DIGESTABLe for me!! So that goes again..PLOT HIGHLY INPLAUSABLE!! BUT still, EASY VIEWING! leaving these FACTORS aside!!

I ENJOYED it TOO!

WELL!! I was thinking if u would get that DVD, we should be able to do HEAD TO HEAD comparison, to se where we r going from here! but!! NP!
