AAMIR KHAN TO PLAY MANGAL PANDEY

If the directors and producers can think of making films on Bhagat Singh, then why not on Mangal Pandey, who was the first to sow the seeds of freedom. He is the bravest soldier of India who launched the first war of independence on May 10, 1857 at Meerut. The spark of his revolt spread like wild fire all over the country, inspiring thousands of the patriots to rise against the mighty colonial power.

With Ajay Devgan and Bobby Deol playing Bhagat Singh, and Paresh Rawal all set to bring Netaji to the screen, it is now Aamir Khan's turn. The Oscar nominated actor-producer has agreed to play the central character in producer Bobby Bedi's 'The Rising'. "Aamir plays the character of Mangal Pandey, the first fighter of our freedom movement. Only the formality of signing the documentary is yet to be completed. Aamir has agreed to act in the film," says Bobby.

Incidently, Aamir took a month to consider the proposal before finally saying yes. Ketan Mehta, who directed Aamir in 'Holi', will direct 'The Rising'. "He is a committed actor. I directed 'Holi' in 1985 and since then Aamir has matured as an actor," says Ketan. Though the rest of the cast is yet to be formalized, Bobby and Ketan expect the film to go on the floor in the beginning of the next year.

Wow! Nice... I cannot wait to see this movie. Patriotic movies are my favorites, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

Just hope Ketan Mehta makes a technically good film.

Looks like a spate of period revolt films are scheduled to hit the marquee....Roland Joffe's bilingual(at least that's what was planned)'The Invaders' in Nov 2003 (they are location scouting even as we speak).....and then 'The Rising' and some others....

nice.....look forward to all of above....

This looks good. Aamir Khan in a Patriotic role is bound to do well at the box office. Ketan Mehta had previously made a patiotic biopic on Sardar Patel with Paresh Rawal. I think this will be more bigger bidget though. i heard that Mangal pandey was one of the first (if not THE first) to start the freedom struggle.

I think they should make a film on BG Tilak as he was the first to organise civil disobedience protests (before gandhi) and even violence against the british rulers. But I guess the people in India today think he's 'too hardcore' for them.
