Damn the man (or woman) who invented the formula film. Kundan Shah´s "Dil Hai Tumhaara" gives us two formulae flicks in one; the formula ´love quadrangle´ and the formula ´business in ruins thanks to evil employees´ plots. Nestled in the middle of this sheer stupidity is a wonderful tale of an unconventional and rare all-woman family. Given that Mr. Shah once delivered the ´thori hatke´ "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa", you wish he would have enough sensitivity to concentrate on tales of humans in awkward situations, instead of that filmi stuff. Too bad these wishes cannot come true.

Dil Hai Tumhaara is so-so. But, I would have prefered to say it was great. There is an excellent story hiding inside this stupid quadrangle flick. Maybe if Gulzar had directed it, the complex issues of dealing with infidelity, unwanted offspring and longing for a mother´s love would have been better presented. As it is, I must reiterate... Damn, the formula flick!

Dil Hai Tumhara records slow opening

Saturday, September 7, 2002:

Yesterday two films released all over the country. With Shashilal Nair's Ek Choti Si Love Story hogging the limelight, the other potential money churner Kundan Shah's Dil Hai Tumhara was slow off the blocks.

“Because of the controversy, the opening of Dil Hai Tumhara has been affected,” said Manoj Desai.

However, director Kundan Shah known for Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is unperturbed.

“I know the other film has released but it does not affect my film. I have done a good job and it will spread through word of mouth,’ said Kundan Shah.

Although the film, Dil Hain Tumhara has opened sluggishly in many places, most critics feel that the effects are only temporary and unlike most films that have released this year, this film is expected to boost its sales after the weekend.

Jimmy Shergill as Preity's childhood friend has scant screen time. His skill as a ventriloquist is questionable. His puppet seems to have a life of its own, even talking at the same time as Jimmy. Once, the puppet is shown sitting away from Jimmy, and manages to talk and move its hands.

:D LOL stupid movie!

I dont know CONGRESS!! but my COMMON SENSE, predicted, this film, to do WELL< in INDIA! lol!

DIL HAI TUMARA HITS THE BOX OFFICE!
The film is doing well at the Indian box office!

After encouraging reviews from the critics, Dil Hai Tumara has opened to a good response at the box office too.

Critics have praised the performances of all three lead females in the film: Rekha, Mahima and especially Preity Zinta.

The movie has opened well in most Indian cities, especially Mumbai where the response has been very good.

Although the early indications are good, its now time to play the waiting game before we know whether the film will become a hit or not.

PREITY VERSUS MANISHA AT THE BOX OFFICE!
Which actress has taken the top spot in the charts?

Director Kundan Shah's latest all-star film Dil Hai Tumara has managed to enter the international Bollywood box office charts at number one!

The movie, which stars the likes of Preity Zinta, Rekha, Mahima Chaudhary, Arjun Rampal and Jimmy Shergill, has opened well in the big Indian cities (especially Mumbai and Delhi) and also did decent business overseas, collecting around £92,600 during its opening weekend in the UK.

Meanwhile, the controversial new film Ek Choti Se Love Story has also done great business in the Indian cinemas where it actually managed to screen.

The Shashilal Nair film, which stars Manisha Koirala, received limited distribution but had such an encouraging response that it should recover costs very soon. It missed out on the top spot for this week's charts because it hasn't released in certain overseas territories such as the UK and US.

Devdas, Chor Machaaye Shor and Maine Dil Tujhko Diya complete the remainder of the top five positions in the charts.

International Bollywood Box Office Charts
1. Dil Hai Tumara
2. Ek Choti Se Love Story
3. Devdas
4. Chor Machaaye Shor
5. Maine Dil Tujhko Diya
6. Jaani Dushman
7. Agni Varsha
8. Mujhse Dosti Karoge
9. Humraaz
10. Awaara Pagal Deewana

DIL HAI TUMHAARA
Too formulaic

Cast & Credits

Producer: Kumar S Taurani & Ramesh S Taurani
Director: Kundan Shah
Music: Nadeem-Shravan
Cast: Rekha, Preity Zinta, Mahima Chaudhary, Arjun Rampal, Jimmi Shergil, Alok Nath, Govind Namdeo & Anjan Srivastav

Nothing sells better than a good old family (melo)drama. May be that’s what dictated Kundan Shah’s choice of subject when he co-scripted Dil Hai Tumhaara with Raj Kumar Santoshi. But why must he resort to a cliche plot, remains unfathomable. He is a maker who has a reputation for sterling comedy (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. But seeing DHT one finds it hard to remember that it is the same Kundan Shah who raised so many laughs. More than a century later, Indian filmmakers still clutch on to the formulaic love triangles, sibling rivalry in love, prototype character roles and the utter absence of logic.

But first the brasstacks: Sarita (Rekha) and Shekhar (Sachin Khedekar) with their daughter Nimmi are a perfect postcard family. Their idyll is shattered when Sarita and Nimmi see Shekhar with another woman and child at an amusement park. Shekhar, Renu (the other woman played by Natasha Sinha) and their daughter Shalu meet with an accident. Renu dies and Shekhar makes a dying request to Sarita — to look after Shalu. Sarita moves to Palampur where she’s the Mayor and the girls grow up — Shalu (Preity Zinta) and Nimmi (Mahima Chowdhury). Sarita resents Shalu, and pointedly shrugs off any show of affection from her, reserving all of hers for Nimmi. Shalu gets up to all sorts of mischief only to grab Sarita’s attention. Predictably Shalu saves Sarita from losing face and the Mayor’s chair. That’s how she meets Dev (Arjun Ramphal), the scion of a wealthy industrialist Khanna (Alok Nath). Dev and Shalu have to fall in love, Shalu too loves Dev, while Samir (Jimmy Shergil) a ventriloquist is mad about Shalu. The later is fond of him as friend. Dev’s gift meant for Shalu is mistaken as being for Nimmi. Sarita and Khanna set up marriage plans. Shalu won’t allow Dev to come clear, and she would rather fake love for Samir rather than incur Sarita’s wrath and make Nimmi unhappy. Such sacrifice!

Why do filmmakers underestimate the intelligence of the audience? How come Nimmi thinks that Shalu is her sister, the latter was much younger but Nimmi was old enough at the time of accident to know that Shalu is an add-on. If Dev is US returned with a management degree, how come he acquired his pair of side kicks so fast? Why does Anjan Srivastav have to play comedy loud and over the top. The rare glimpse of the actor’s talent comes through when in a scene with Rekha he subtly pulls out his comb (a security blanket) when he could be found out for some impropriety. If Samir is such a talented ventriloquist why does he return to Palampur after his tour to Japan. For that matter what were the two Japanese tourists doing in Palampur? Scouting for apples or talent! Or why does Sariat even after 20 years have the guts to tell Shalu the truth about her kinship. Maybe that way Mittal (Govind Namdeo) could try to spin his slimy web.

Redemption comes in the form of some performances, topped by an elegant and restrained performance by Rekha. She shows her disdain towards Shalu, she instinctively reaches out to hug her when she saves the day, but withdraws it compulsively. Preity Zinta is increasingly showing her ease with comedy, the vivacious tomboy who slides down bannisters and is ever in trouble with her mother. But later in the film she shows her stripes for a dramatic turn, when she reveals all to Khanna, it is done without a trace of melodrama, the tears are shed, but well in control. Arjun Ramphal shows he’s not two left feet especially when it comes to dancing with Preity. Mahima Choudhury and Jimmy Shergil put in an able support. Finally, a Hindi film shows sisters bonding with each other — they share secrets, have pillow fights, but when they fight they make up soon after. Preity even wears Mahima’s clothes. The fresh locale of Himachal Pradesh is what stops the film from being an eyesore.

how could you consider MK a good film? it just shows how pathetic of a director vvc is!

You have got to be kidding to compare Sanjay Gupta to Vidhu Vinod Chopra (one of the very few good directors in Bollywood). In fact even the two names don't belong together in the same topic or sentence.

As for Mission Kashmir, it was most certainly one of the better products from Bollywood even if it was not a great film. Anyhow, even if you may not like Mission Kashmir how could you term Vidhu Vinod Chopra as a 'pathetic director'? Cause if he is pathetic, then what term would you reserve for the rest of Bollywood.

Having said my piece in support of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, let me elaborate on my opinion of him as a film maker. I think he is a very good director, certainly one of the best in Bollywood. Where he fails, is as a script writer and it is the script of his films which have weakened his films, or else some of them would most certainly have been classics. If only he would leave the script writing to someone else.

ok what you said is fair...

however, we must make not that ultimately its the directors' decision to incorporate elements of a script. if vvc somehow decides that he is all-great, and can handle every part of the movie himself, then he has an ego problem..

and btw, there are many many good directors in bollywood. there are many many good screen-writers in bollywood.

its only when a film is made that that incorporates BOTH elements, can it be good. to say that well, he's a good director, so we'll excuse the fact that he knows jack about screenplays is irresponsible.

JUst to clarify my position a little more. Most of VIdhu Vinod Chopra's films are very good and this is inspite of poor scripts in a few of them. What I am suggesting is that with better scripts, the films would have been even better not that they are not good already. Also when I say weak scripts, you have to keep in mind I say that in respect to the standard of Vidhu Vinod Chopra films, because compared to most Bollywood scripts they are classics. :)
