First things first. Is all the hue and cry raised by Manisha Koirala about the way some scenes relating to her have been shot in the case of 'Ek Chhoti Si Love Story' really justified? No, there is nothing 'obscene' in the disputed scenes shot with a double, and all that the controversy and court case between the actress and director Shashilal Nair seems to have done is to garner free publicity for the film.

Left to itself, the film is just trash. Any prurient minds in search of 'hot scenes' will come away very disappointed. The disappointment will be twofold as the so-called 'hot scenes' have been shot with the aid of a double.

There was some uncertainty whether the film would be released on time following a stay on the release of the film by the Mumbai High Court but the exhibitors took the stand that they were not a party to the dispute. They said that they had not been served any notice staying the release of the film and went ahead with its screening.

Had 'Ek Chhoti Si Love Story' not come along who would have remembered Shashilal Nair? The director who started his career with 'Karamdaata' and gave us duds like 'Krodh', 'Grahan' and 'One Two Ka Four', had for the most part faded from memory.

For the record, 'Ek Chhoti Si Love Story' is the tale of a teenager, Aditya (Aditya Seal), who lives in a housing society and has taken to spying on a young lady living in a flat opposite his with the aid of a telescope. The voyeurism slowly turns into infatuation and the infatuation into puppy love. Aditya spends his whole time observing his 'beloved'. He even sets his clock to the time she returns from work, so that he might not miss even a moment of her 'company'. He trails her everywhere and finally works up the courage to tell her that he loves her. The lady is naturally amazed by this declaration. How will the young lad's affection for the grown up miss work out?

There is no drama and no plot points in the film and the narration is far too insipid. The shots of Manisha in scanty clothing are there merely to titillate the viewer. Nair has nothing to say through his film.

Again, for the record, the cinematography is by Muralidharan C.K, the art direction by R.Verman, background music by Arvind Nirmal and costumes by Ashley Rebello.

I was reading it has been held up by the courts for further review after those promo photos were published.

I called the theater and they said it won't be showing as the print hasn't arrived.

The theater near me has the times listed for today. I guess they did get the print.

I was wrong! Both the Naz8 and the IMC6 theaters here in California are showing "Ek Chhoti Si". And come to think of it I don't see why not. The recent court order stay was from an Indian court and that has no jurisdiction over anything that goes on here in the US. :stupid: :tounge:

Nair wants patch up with Manisha Koirla

SUBHASH K JHA

IANS [ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2002 1:37:37 PM ]

MUMBAI: The outcome of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and filmmaker Shashilal Nair's meeting over Manisha Koirala-starrer Ek Chhoti Si Love Story may have been inconclusive, but the director wants a patch up with the actress.

Nair met Thackeray on Tuesday afternoon. Manisha was also present at the meeting. But Nair walked out of it.

"I did walk out because Manisha's remarks against me became increasingly personal," Nair said. "I told Mr Thackeray I wasn't there to hear her abuse me. I just wanted him to see my film. He has agreed."

Shiv Sena activists had ransacked Mumbai theatres screening the film after Manisha met Thackeray on September 6, the day it was released, forcing the cancellation of further screenings of Ek Chhoti Si Love Story!

Nair wants to release ECLS in Mumbai tomorrow

Subhash K Jha

In a startling show of aggression and a reversal in his earlier mediatory mood Shashilal Nair says he is determined to release his film, Ek Chhotisi Love Story tomorrow in Mumbai with the help of Mumbai’s law enfocement agencies.

Nair says the Theatre Owners’ Association has asked for Manisha Koirala‘s arrest for losses suffered due to the vandalism caused by Shiv Sena men. "All the losses that the theatre owners have suffered due to the cancellation of my film’s release are being imputed on Manisha," says Nair.

"She got the stay order against my film on the assurance that she will compensate for the losses. And now they’re talking of taking her to task. Mr Chhagan Bhujbal (Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra) has already arrested 23 people. Either the Shiv Sena or Manisha has to own responsibility for the losses. It’s getting unpleasant by the day."

Nair now says he will cut only a few shots, "The film cannot be legally cut any longer."

What is Manisha doing to ensure the film isn’t released in Mumbai? "Tomorrow I am meeting Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Sushma Swaraj . She knows the whole story. I now have names of exhibitors all over the country. Sushmaji can easily cancel the censor certificate until the courts clear it in the first week of October. If that fails then I will sue the film’s distributors--Shringar Films for contempt of court. He can’t be allowed to get away with this."

Nair says Ek Chhotisi Love Story will be released tomorrow in Mumbai. "The High Court’s stay order doesn’t apply to the 97 prints which had already been despatched. We have no legal right to make any more prints. But we can do what we like with those 97 prints. The film will be released tomorrow with heavy police protection."

For all those expecting to see earth-shattering sex-scenes in this film, Ek Chhotisi Love Story is sure to be a damp squib. A blatant copy of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s A Short Film About Love (1989), director Shashilal Nair’s film about a teenaged boy’s obsession with a much older woman may have become this millennium’s most publicized Hindi film, but alas, it fails to live up to those mammoth expectations.

The film, though it has an unusual subject when compared to the stereotype Bollywood formulae, it fails to impress as the slow pace combined with the unimpressive performances slacken it completely. The story is about a young boy (Aditya Seal) approaching his 15th birthday. His parents leave to the US for pursuing their individual careers leaving him behind with his grandmother (Saroj Bhargav) in India. Soon, the lonely boy’s focus shifts to a 26-year-old woman (Manisha Koirala) who lives across their apartment. He trains his telescope to secretly follow her movements. He synchronizes his life with hers: eats when she eats, sleeps when she sleeps and cries when she cries. But the woman is unaware of his existence. He makes clumsy attempts to steal her attention but in vain. The boy starts getting jealous of her boyfriend (Ranvir Shourie), who visits her often. And one fine day he musters the courage to confess his love to her, and that he had been watching her, leaving her zapped. The story could have been handled better but unfortunately it has ended up a sleazy, exploitative mess. First of all, Manisha looks far from someone who any teenager would lust so badly after. She’s fat, unkempt and her hippie-ish get up makes her look completely undesirable. She works in a music shop, has a kinky lover with whom she shares an exciting pre-marital sex life and strangely there are no curtains in her home. The teenager is a voyeur while the spiky haired Manisha enjoys her exhibitionistic streak. So, why would any youngster who knows the score slit his wrists (????) for a woman who already has a life? There are some unbelievable scenes like when the boy calls the fire brigade to stop their lovemaking session that seem far-fetched. Also, why does Manisha suddenly turn the table, getting obsessive of the youngster after she knows of his immature preserve plans?

Seeing the film makes the entire controversy almost foolish. Didn’t Manisha know what she was getting into while making the film? She’s made a mountain of a molehill as the duplicate’s naked scenes almost go unnoticed in the film. Technically, ‘ECLS’ is a very mediocre film. With low production values, the only saving grace is C.K Murlidharan’s cinematography. All the performances are weak, especially that of Manisha, who fails to impress in the film. Plus, her spiky wig and tiny shorts make her look like she’s all set to give Guddi Maruti a run for her money. She may go on saying how the director cheated her, but watching the film; it becomes clear that she knew all along what exactly was happening. Nair has made a titillating desperate film, but unfortunately hasn’t been able to hold the pace enough to interest after the first few minutes. Overall, this is a sad attempt which would have surely gone unnoticed hadn’t the director-actress washed their dirty linen in public.
